  1. I remember Dick Strawbridge built a water wheel years ago in his Cornish house, used a alternator but needed a 80:1 gearbox to get the revs, luckily he found one. I would have thought an 80:1 via a chain set would loose less power 🤷‍♂️? (I wish I had running water at mine.)
  2. +1 to the above, not a BI,s job to judge workmanship, only compliance. If you want the workmanship checked you will have to find an independent roofer/builder/inspector .
  3. @zoothorn can you reach that back wall? If you can I would put shelves on that wall and a piece of thick ply on the left hand wall and bang nails in to hang tools on, you could always draw around the tool and paint the shape so you can see instantly where things go (I was going to do this but it never got off the bottom of my “to do list”.
  4. No, got a neighbour (contractor) to do it, half an acre took less than an hour and he charged me £60, well worth it 👍
  5. Do yourself a favour and buy/rent a plasterboard lifter, last job I did I bought one secondhand and wondered why the hell I had struggled for years without one, I even sold it fir more than i paid fir it 🤷‍♂️
  6. Nah, get a machine in like I did 🤣🤣🤣
  7. Yes I had to use expensive cable from meter (in garage) to house but DNO allowed to use thin cheap stuff to supply the meter 🤷‍♂️.
  8. Yes, the advise I was given was run all in separate 50mm (unless 110mm) if possible and straight runs, more bends, joins and small pipes = more chance of blockage, also joint use of pipes might lead to “gurgling”. Not always possible but life is a compromise 🤔
  9. Good idea I thought that, measured exactly, calculated plaster thickness and it was out a bit, I struggled to find a toilet fitting that worked. They turned out to all be a bit different. sorry don’t understand question 1 🤔
  10. The door only opens on one of them!!!, decent threshold strip to join them (and make sure the threshold strip is exactly under the door or it looks crap 🤔)
  11. Agreed but are you having MVHR? As then you will need more. My pet hate is doors that “scrub” carpets. I used to put a 2” strip of hardboard between frame uprights to kick the carpet up to the door when closed but allows the door to swing missing the carpet (just).
  12. Welcome to THE forum for self builds. There is no such thing as a silly question, silly is not asking in the first place. We have all “been there, done that “ so you will get real world experiences. Planners can be really awkward but you can always go to appeal which I did (myself) and found it easier than dealing with planners!! I look forward to your questions and plans for the future.
  13. Can you’re architect recommend anyone else? Yellow pages? 🤷‍♂️
  14. I hope you have not paid him? You have no choice but to find another S.E.
  15. Around @pocster,s area stone goes black from Avonmouth (an industrial area and docks with a history of pollution) I know because I used to live close by (but escaped 😇).
  16. Basically you build a dam and generator for the lowest water level and anything over that simply overflows the dam 👍 looking forward to your next project/thread.
  17. That’s a short “on” time? Mine is on 24/7. Discussions have taken place on timers to reduce “on” time. Thoughts anyone 🤔
  18. And the moon produces tides 🤯
  19. Ha, I did no modelling, no calculations just pure logic, and it worked 👍
  20. That is said a lot but I found it therapeutic. I have had stress related health issues in the past so it was a worry. I was lucky and had a brilliant main contractor who built the shell only, and my first words to him was “ look I know shit happens but I refuse to get stressed over this build, it takes as long as it takes”. We had the odd problem but frankly it went well. However I did not need a loan/mortgage and was retired so that helps.
  21. No it increases “head” and concentrates flow through the turbine 👍
  22. Don’t tell @pocsterthat 🤣
  23. So yours works similar to mine, timer changes which pipe it blows down!, very poor documentation and lack of bits required (IMO), I would give them an earful.
  24. All we need now is a dam to create a decent flow 🤯
  25. I,m with @tonyshouse and @Iceverge, I am in a fairly exposed location and used rockwall batts full fill(they have a BBA certificate for full fill) I also had check reveals (inner skin opening bigger than outer) to give angled reveals. Brick arches in outer skin and separate lintel internally. I made my own closures like @Iceverge shows above, window sitting on brick sills (just) and held to outer skin with stainless brackets and screws. the only thing I would do differently if I did it again is use plaster stop bead next to the window to give a movement gap that can be filled with flexible mastic (several here have had cracking at this point like me).
