Slaying the demon chimney stack
joe90 replied to Nick Thomas's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
I second get rid if it’s not used, take down below roof level and tile/slate/whatever over. -
Already for concrete being delivered in the morning. I roped my daughters boyfriend and his mate to shovel it for me whilst I “project manage “ (make the tea) and trowel it off with an “easy trowel” on a long pole.

architraves fixed to door frame or wall?
joe90 replied to johnhenstock83's topic in Doors & Door Frames
I glue and nail architrave to the door frame and use “no nails” on the outside edge of the architrave to the wall which also acts as a filler. -
Hi and welcome to THE forum on all things building. Our aim is building green so tend to concentrate on insulation and air tightness, however lots of knowledge here and many who are willing to help/share. Just remember there is no such thing as a stupid question, stupid is not asking, we have all been there.

I can see no point in a gap at all 🤷♂️

Frankly you have to do what you feel comfortable with mate. That’s a good idea above with the hangers, just bring them lower so the 3x2 bottom edge is level with the bottom of the lower chord.
-
@nod is probably right in that it needs no additional battens (and he has already done this) , the OSB is almost impossible to remove from the top or bottom cord but if your worried just run a vertical batten, 2x1 from top batten to bottom batten in the four corners of your “thing” using wood screws (or bolts if you want to be OCD) then simply hang your “thing” from the bottom cords. 🤔

Any downsides to removing purlins and using ridge beam?
joe90 replied to Digmixfill's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
You are not altering the angle of your roof! So why would the lower ridge beam kick out the lower ends . An additional ridge beam could be added below whatever ridge board you currently have. -
That sounds like a very good move, especially if the “perpendicular joist” is fixed to both top and bottom rail . (Over engineered but I am like that 😎)

Every day is a school day, I didn’t know this….. Flints are concretions that grew within the sediment after its deposition by the precipitation of silica; filling burrows/cavities and enveloping the remains of marine creatures, before dehydrating and hardening into the microscopic quartz crystals which constitute flint.

Any downsides to removing purlins and using ridge beam?

For my warm loft (used as storage and MVHR kit) I used 300mm I beams with ridge board full fill with rockwall and lined with OSB3 bubble glued together. -
Is it like pearls that grow around a grain of sand, or another object 🤷♂️

Fair point, what if you arrange collect and arranged your own courier 🤷♂️

Welcome, sounds very interesting but, as said above be very cautious, tax and liabilities are renown for being complicated in france.

Is it because it’s long lengths? I recently purchased recycled plastic lengths for my new garage base and the postage was a 1/3rd if they cut it in half 🤷♂️

Inside a flint 🤷♂️?

Ha, a million dollar question I am afraid (plus I have been retired a while and timber costs have soared). It should not, if not used fir sleeping and say it’s for “storage” no planning is required, I have installed fold down loft ladders in some (no room on the landing for additional staircase), frankly you could limit the insulation to your budget, I have even used the dubious “foil“ type insulation with acceptable results, plaster boarding is relatively cheap especially if you use tapered boards and just fill the joints and fixings. We need photos and measurements for a more accurate answer to possibilities for you.
-
The current joists are ceiling joists only big enough to hold the ceiling up, you need to install floor joists (size depends on span) to cope with walking on/storing stuff. I have done a few of these “storage” loft conversions, not that difficult and much more relaxed on building regs.

Solar - Where to start?
joe90 replied to DazRave's topic in Energy Efficient & Sustainable Design Concepts
Interesting as I recently moved to a house with a combi gas boiler having previously having a large DHW tank that gave hot water to any tap in seconds. My dilemma now is, is it worth running the combi for several minutes to give me a sink of hot water to wash up a few dishes or boil the kettle? I know gas is a third of the price of leky but the boiler runs three times as long 🤔 ( I can’t have a shower by boiling the kettle 🤣). -
After-market brakes for a dangerous trundle bed

Oh, mine can rise to make a second single or double bed. My answer to your problem is “WEAR SLIPPERS” 🤣 -

When should I repair minor cracks and screw pops?
joe90 replied to amilio's topic in Plastering & Rendering
2 years It depends between developers, however generally speaking the snagging period can be split into 2 sections: within the first 2 months and then before the end of 2 years... It is important to raise your snagging list with the builder within the 2 months of completion because it is in line with the HBF survey deadline. -
whats this part of a roof called?
joe90 replied to Kai casswell's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
Half a saddle 🤷♂️, it will have to me made on site in lead. Are you DIYing this or using a roofer, any decent roofer would know how to do it, or there is enough knowledge here to walk you through it 👍 -
