Both you @joth and @SteamyTea make a good point (if a little unkindly here). The concepts concerned are not easy to get your head round if all we do most days is shove money around our world. Very few of us shove electricity around the place. Or have a clear idea that a commonly available one bar electric fire switched on for one hour consumes a kW and so calling it a kW hour is another way of describing the same thing. So when it comes to kWp, or kW/m squared per annum ... 4 years on, and I'm still cautious about units where electricity is concerned (pun accidental)

To adapt the words of the song "Some girls do, some girls don't ", some days the grease gun lets me, and some days it won't. Today, it won't. Pump grease that is. The number of times I have used a grease gun successfully is far outweighed by the slippery-fingered-fulminating-damned-awful-annoyance-ridden efforts at loading and getting any out of the end of the connecting hose. And that's what matters most. Starting with an emotionally and technically informed connection between you and the build material. It means you understand it at a deeper level. But it was a mistake on my part to assume that such a connection might be shared - at least in part - by key trades.

Yep. Forgot to tension them, so today, while digging the water pipe in, the track popped off the front follower. ?

The track can off my digger today.... no sweat, I can fix it: never done it before, but I'm sure I can. I think. Now then, where's that socket set eh? (to release the nut that releases the track tension) Bugger. It's been nicked - along with all the other stuff that they made off with the other day . And haven't I just gone and submitted the insurance claim form. (expletive deleted)ety(expletive deleted). [? Fair enough - Mods lose it sometimes too] Any idea which socket set I should buy. Good workman-like set with impact sockets too. Suggestions?

But costly but ...... 01544387333. Once you have that you'll be able to compare prices. Loads of others do tapered insulation - Kingspan's was the best overall offering for what we needed.

Your Utility company will answer all those questions (United Utilities in our case). For us the answers were; Yes. 900mm below ground level, with a protective wire reinforced plastic mesh laid at 300mm below ground level. There was no infill spec. But the inspector suggested ' ... soft earth ...' Use ducting. You need a non return valve and a stop tap.

Most, if not all of my cock-ups are documented here on BH . @Pete is being a bit creative with the truth - he's done a lot of self this and that, and his place is really very interesting - only seen it from the otuside (still waiting for an invitation, mind!). That owl worries me a bit. Principally because the ecology part of our house build was an expensive exercise - but ultimately very successful aspect of the build. The ecology needs handling with care. And by that I mean not allowing interest groups to push their agenda to the extent that they sometimes do. PM me if you like..... ?
