Got broken in to last night ....
Moira Niedzwiecka replied to ToughButterCup's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Shit Ian, I am so sorry . B....stards. -
Thanks for the info chaps. I will look into this. @Oz07 I do want gates for security really as the location is a bit vulnerable & I am on my own.
-
A condition of my planning permission is to install inward opening electric gates 5m back from the public highway. I am on a single track lane & need to have a cars length to pull off the road in front of the gates. My access is also slightly sloping uphill. Has anyone any knowledge of electric gate mechanisms? Prices from electric gate companies are prohibitive for me at the moment. I have seen mechanisms for sale on ebay that could be affordable but just a bit unsure if any good. The gates & gateposts will be timber. Any suggestions appreciated.

I had a 9mm plywood over the caberdeck & then the vinyl underlay. Worked really well. It is just soooo easy to clean.

Hi, If you look on the Moduleo website click to view brochure it is on page 100/101.
-
I like Moduleo as it is a commercial grade & has the upstand so don't have to bother with skirting boards.

Just fitted Moduleo Transform LVT upstairs in new house. Classic Oak I am going to have the same downstairs. Have LVT in my existing house. Been down for 11 years & looks as good as when new. Check the wear layer depth.

Protecting from knocks
Moira Niedzwiecka replied to Triassic's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
I taped antinox over anything I wanted protected. If you still need the light use bubble wrap. -
I quite liked the GD from last night. Nearly fell about laughing when he said thought it could be built for £250k. Agree on shipping container house for favourite of past GD. Couldn't agree with KM on the other 4 on his list. I did like the cave one & enjoyed watching it at the time.

I just hate skirting boards!
Moira Niedzwiecka replied to canalsiderenovation's topic in General Joinery
I wanted shadow gaps until I find out the cost. Also decided against for practical reasons. I have chosen Moduleo LVT. They do a small up stand as a skirting, so totally maintenance free, no problem when the floor is mopped. It looks great. Really happy with it. -
I don't see this house as my 'forever house'. I plan to enjoy it for a few years & then possibly look for another plot. I have learned so much by building this & now have lots of other ideas I would like to try. Only next time I want to be able to build it full time & not have to fit it around working.

Wind spinners/ mini turbines?
Moira Niedzwiecka replied to Moira Niedzwiecka's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
I doubt it, these are just garden ornaments. My garden is quite elevated & gets a bit blowy. I just wondered if the energy from a group of 3 wind sculptures could be harnessed in anyway to power a small water feature. -
I am just starting to think about the garden at the new house. I quite like some of the wind sculptures/spinners that are about. It occurred to me that they generate a lot of energy when it is breezy, like mini turbines or a dynamo. I am really dim at this stuff but would it be possible to harness some of that energy to use in the garden, eg for a water feature or pond pump, or garden lighting? I

Many times I during the last 3 years I could have happily put a match to the bloody thing & walked away. I had some very dark times & wished I had just sold the plot after getting planning permission. However, now, I cannot imagine not having done it. I walk around the spaces inside with a real sense of pride & excitement at what it will be, one day. I am dog tired & have no money, but I will have the house of my dreams, something I could never have afforded had I not done it myself. Of course, it has cost far more than anticipated, I will be about £50k over by the time it is finished. A result of inexperience, circumstances and yes, optimism bias.

I am about 3 1/2 years in now. Still lots to do but getting there. I work full time. Get home about 6pm & work most evenings until about 9 or 10pm & then eat, shower & bed. I work every other Saturday, so every other Sat on build & Sundays. Not had a holiday since beginning of build. I would have done a lot more myself but some things are just too heavy for me on my own to shift. I hope to be finished in about 6 months time. I learn as I go & some things have taken me far longer than they should have, but that is because I am very careful. I would sooner do what I can myself & take my time than pay someone to do an inferior job.

The Back Story
Moira Niedzwiecka commented on Red Kite's blog entry in Self Building two in North Wiltshire
Well done you! The houses look great, really interesting. We won 9 to 2 at committee & the planning officer sent me an email saying she had to recommend refusal because she was an officer of the council & we were against policy but she was glad that we had won. We too had an awful time with some of our neighbours. We never reacted to any of the name calling, vile emails, false accusations, turning their backs to us. It was like living in a school playground. However, most of our village was supportive & horrified at what we were going through. 22 of them turned up to support us at the planning committee meeting. 3 of the 5 awful neighbours have now moved away. The remaining 2 do not speak to me to this day. They hate me because I am a constant reminder of their dreadful behaviour. They are largely isolated within the village. Fine by me. Good luck to you with your exciting project. -
I have the Click Definity range in polar white. Very discreet & will be good when need to redecorate as you can remove the front plate. Agree impossible to suss what I needed from catalogue or website. My electrician made a list & I emailed it to UK Electrical Supplies & they sorted it out for me. They were really helpful & good prices too.

Avoiding a big white cuboid
Moira Niedzwiecka replied to Moonshine's topic in New House & Self Build Design
I would have loved to build the glazed white cube. Alas, although I am outside the village envelope I am still inside the conservation area. Had to use ironstone & have a pitched slate roof, no choice. The challenge then was to make it look as little like the traditional cottage I am moving from and as contemporary as possible. I managed to get the planners to agree to gables in render & some cedar cladding to the front elevation. Saved a lot of money as all stone would have been very expensive. Now it is built I quite like it. -
Discount Offers of the Week
Moira Niedzwiecka replied to Ferdinand's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
@Ferdinand Very nice. Just the sort of things I am looking for. However, even the ex display items are way out of my reach. I am more a Neff/Yaris kind of a gal. I have just bought Ikea Pax wardrobe carcasses & inners. I intend to have them hidden behind a wall of birch ply. I am going to ask my joiner friend if he can make a bed to match similar to the one I posted. I am hoping he will be able to build something like below as well. -
Sure did. Captain: Number One. Push off, will you, there's a good fellow. I'm trying to take a relaxing bath! [blows into his bubble pipe] Number One: May I respectfully remind you that you've now been in that bath for over three years. Captain: Yes, well, one needs to relax a lot in a job like mine.
