Some SEs prefer mini piles others hate them and would rather deep We were surrounded by hundreds of trees on our previous build and on clay We used deep strip foundations Around two meters and Clay board to help with the heave Came in at around a third of the cost of piling

Great post Ian and will benefit many self builders in the future It’s very easy as a self builder to think Why me Why am I being treated like this by planners and others Especially when you see a nearby application fly through planning without any fuss If you where to google the term self builder I’m sure your name would pop up somewhere More hardcore self builder than typical -

It’s a quick and easy repair on a small area As a contractor I use 1000s of meters of cement boards and there’s no difference between any of them Other than Knauf are 40% more expensive than what I usually use Over lockdown I was bringing them in from Poland without any issues It’s pretty poor Johnson’s are looking for lame excuses Rather than getting to the bottom of it I’ve stopped quoting for Webber Rend jobs Due to the reps all following the same line when there’s a batch match issue

Bringing in a a surveyor for a single house can be overkill Most of the builders merchants offer a QS service Usually a one off payment of about £500 You simply need to send them your building regs submission and they will do the rest

Lots of online testers will come out for one home £200 max £600 and needing multiple homes sounds like a scam -
