  1. Yes mate but they have an kitchen extension, so the soil pipe basically goes out the wall, then 90 degrees, travels along and then joins a stack which goes through the extension roof and boxed in on an internal wall in the extension. I just did the external boxing in around the soil and waste pipes a couple of years ago and got a roofer mate to felt it - but that will have to opened up I reckon You can see it in this pic, you can see the toilet window sill at the top of the pic (so to the right of the stack)
  2. The cupboard area behind the bathroom door has the combi boiler in it, so water pressure shouldn't be a major issue. There is a window in the old toilet area which I would leave. I'd be looking at having a proper shower seat to make life easier for them which would be under than window.
  3. So my plan is now to remove the wall between the bathroom and toilet, close off the toilet door and make the old toilet area into a new walk in shower. Something like this
  4. Evening guys, Got a job to try and fit in while trying to build my house, which is to pull out a bathroom and fit a walk in shower and change around their bathroom. It's for my Mum and Dad who are both 86. His knees are pretty screwed and has struggled to get into a bath. They both very rarely have a bath, favouring a shower these days. So it's time to change things before one of them has an accident getting in and out of the bath. I'm wondering if anyone has any pointers/advice in a shower room for an older generation. Is it possible to have a raised toilet, which I'd assume is wall hung - can they be fitted at any height? Here's pics of their current bathroom. My first thought was to have an 1800 shower where the bath is, but then I had the realisation that once a glass screen was fitted, it would make the room feel small and also have no elbow room.
  5. It's being seen to do the right thing if it ever went to court Such a shame that this guy is doing work like this on probably the most important part of a house
  6. have you put that/got that in writing to cover yourself?
  7. I think the law is you need to give the first roofer a chance to put it right? last thing you want/need is him taking you to court. So the angle I'd imagine you need to take is being perceived to give him a chance, but maybe give him so much work to put right that he doesn't want to come back
  8. A genny may come in handy for other things too remember. Are you a costco member as they do a site one for reasonable money IIRC

I'm sure someone posted that there's a yearly check that's required too?
  10. very neat job mate!
  11. I think that's a wise move. My thought was yes his idea may work, but what happens if there's an issue a year down the line cos of the extra layer, is he really gonna be interested in coming back to sort it when he has your money.
  12. heard exactly the same thing
  13. I've done it before an didn't have any issues, left overnight. Why have people said not to?

I have the mentality of learning to do something myself rather than pay - especially when I have a house to build and will need to keep them sharp lol

Dropped and followed by the normal reaction of sticking out a foot to catch it lol I think I'll try what Declan suggested, spend a but of time this weekend getting the edges back. If I have no luck, I'll look at a medium price range set and maybe a sharpening jig
  22. Doing some cutting on my wall plates today using my chisel set I've had for years. The set is a cheap set but never had the need to invest in another set as I rarely use them. The set I have struggled and I wondered if getting a better set helps retain a sharp edge? Is there a noticeable difference between a cheap no brand set and a known brand set? Cheers Vijay
  23. Professional certainly used to mean they were trained to do the job, had experience and were more than capable - well what's what it means to me anyway And what ever we call it, in my opinion, it still comes down to pride in what ever work you do that's lacking.
  24. I see your point but not sure I totally agree with that. You're not hiring DIY Dave, you're paying someone who's advertised their skills as able to do the work, therefore it should be a lot better than a weekend DIY job. They should not price a job if it's not to a good, professional standard, it goes back to what I said, no pride in their work if they are happy to do a cheap bodge job.
  25. I think Oz07 touched on the point, way too many trades with no pride in their work. I always look at building work on my travels and I am shocked at what people are expected to accept. I've done everything myself for that exact reason, don't want to be in the position of having to pull a trade cos I'm not happy with their standard of work. IMO, sadly we live in a world where it's more about the money than looking at a job and knowing it's spot on (and that's not just about the building trade)
