  1. @OnOff lives in the 'Garden of England'. If he fails to grow beans, then no amount of ash is going to help.
  2. We were fitting them 35 years ago in the UK market. Customers loved them.
  3. A quick look at the dimensions, not going to have a very large radiator in in, and it sees a bit light. I take it is is not an inverter driven model. Kind of thing that would suit me as well, so I am going to recommend you get one, then report back.
  4. Yes she was. 93 this coming Wednesday. May Aunt, who was blind, fell between the bed and the wall. In trying to get herself up, she pulled on the bedside table, toppling it over and wedging that between herself and the wall as well. My parents were due to visit the next day, but as they were passing, they decided to call in. Probably bought her a few more years life. My boss has an old Father and for some reason had a feeling that at 10 PM, should just pop around. His Father had collapsed on the kitchen floor. Not a problem, son has a key. Except, his Father had left keys in the door locks, so that was useless. Could not find anything to safely break a window with, so called the emergency services. They forced a window and got in. So doors that can ALWAYS be opened from outside is worth considering.
  5. Roof integrated PV can't, and it costs no more than some roof tiling.
  6. Tarmac is the worlds largest recycled product, followed by concrete. Cement is not that bad in reality.
  7. Just 'learning on the job' with my Mother. It is really difficult to know what to do, a walk in shower, with a level floor (wet room) is necessary, them may sure it is large enough for a seat, controls are reachable from that seat. Lavatories need to be higher, and if doorways can be wider, or at least a 'straight line' into and out of them, that helps. Remote control light switches, but make sure you can override them manually and you have plenty of pre-programed controllers. An oven with a drop down door, an induction hob (as it is not very hot) after use, taps that are easy to use, without looking like industrial ones. And a very good chair. One thing I have found is that old ladies can be quite determined and are happy to get on with it, it an amazing manner. Considering my Mother was sent home from hospital 'to dies within a week to 10 days' after a couple of strokes and a hip replacement, 5 months on, she is trotting about and starting to look after herself again. Just this morning, as I took her a mug of tea, she said that she had to get up during the night to wee. I said that is a victory, not a hindrance. She agreed.
  8. Yes, that is an idea. I am assuming that @Delbot wants to go low embodied carbon and energy, and recycle. Our old mate Ed Davies dug some holes, filled them with stone, then a small cast concrete cap, if I remember right. It will be here somewhere: https://edavies.me.uk/blog/tag/perihelion/index1.html
  9. I used so old roof slates to line the sides of my timber retaining wall, then just filled with dirt and planted away. Two years in it is still fine. Traditionally old railway sleepers were used, but the anti-rot treatment was the problem.
  10. Little, if any, environmental benefit over OPC, and at least cement set hard. Going to be an interesting challenge to get a non cast foundation system past the building inspector.
  11. I am surprised we don't already do that. Not even sure if we have a synchronisation signal. Could use the old number station channels
  12. He actually did not believe his model. Not surprising as it had never been tested. Since then if has been shown to be pretty good and adaptable to others houses.
  13. WPD told me that technically more can be fed back upstream, but then it starts to interfere with the larger generators, they cannot easily be powered down and kept within the frequency range. It is why domestic fridges are not turned on and off for grid balancing, but large refrigeration equipment is. All about knowing, the sinks and sources and their characteristics at startup. Don't want the tail wagging the dog.
  14. That is sales people for you they can only sell what they have.
  15. Not in practice. The times when windspeed is low, solar radiation high, along with high air temperatures are very rare, and the solar radiation levels are probably higher than STP for the modules, so they would be over performing anyway.
  16. You would get a lot more PV on a tradition roof
  17. Have a look at roof integrated. As cheap as tiling and looks much better.
  18. Just thought I would look at the usage of my mother's old Bosch oven. The meter was reading a stead 240W, checked her pie and it went up to 2040W. So 1.8 kW, for an hour. My much newer oven used almost half that at 1 kW. Both are a similar size. Getting my supper cooked by some nice Indian men.
  19. This has been tried by the manufacturers and they found out that for the same quality of wash, it actually takes more energy. And the soap manufacturers where not keen because some if the mixes solidify when cool.
  20. Trickle power. Energy is power, multiplied by time. So they may not be as good as you think.
  21. Trimming Holly bush. A sweaty job.
  22. -27⁰C when I last checked. I usually do the temperatures on the cooked food. Why we have 5 stars.
  23. By having it go to export, everyone benefits, a little.
  24. If I had known she would still be alive 5 months after her stroke, I would have got myself a hybrid for the weekly 600 mile journey. Recon I could get 8 kW on this roof. Lovely and sunny today.
  25. Smug. But just think off all the poor people you are helping who have been waiting for nearly two decades for your local nuclear power station to get finished. Just charging up the battery in my mother's car as it has been sitting idle for 5 months. Sounds alright, in tickover, for a diesel.
