  1. Most of the decisions come down to what you want and what restrictions if any you have. Swinging or sliding, colour and material for frame, budget, etc etc. your doors are not big so there will probably be “standard” units that will fit. If you are going for better thermal efficiency then your options narrow as the spec goes up.

  2. Various ways to skin the cat. Double glaze can vary in U value hugely, depending on the frame build up and double glazed units used. We have triple glazed windows and 4 double glazed outside door sets -mainly due to weight. UPVc/aluminium U values came in at between 1.4 and 2. something, which is rubbish. We went for wooden (and all windows) with krypton gas between the double glazed pains, total U value for the door is either 1.0 or 1.1, a while since a looked. Unless the rest of your house is well insulated and draft proof, triple glazed is long way down the list of things to spend your money on.

  4. I contacted the environment agency, explained what I wanted to do. They sent one of their engineers down for a site meeting, who was very knowledgeable and came up with some great ideas of diverting a feeder stream while I had a 22 ton excavator in. Four months later we had a landscaped acre lake, complete with fishing stages and a boat dock and thousands of margin and water plants in place. You need somewhere to loose the muck, and there will be plenty, and it's too costly to truck it away.

  5. Just fitted a fully glazed triple glazed uPVC from my preferred supplier, weight of the glass wasn't an issue in their standard profile. Online supply only UPVC double/triple window/door prices/quotes (modernupvcwindows.co.uk)

  6. If you are wanting UPVC, get in touch with a local supplier and let them supply and fit. This way they are responsible for the measure and any problems. Probably much cheaper than you buying and getting someone to fit

  7. Any glass in a door or next to it must be safety glass so cracking is not a problem. No idea about thermal properties of one or two panes.

  8. Have they actually initiated enforcement action or just warned you that they will if you don't do xyz? If they haven't initiated enforcement action I would speak to a planning consultant asap about an application for a certificate of lawful development on the grounds it's too late to initiate enforcement action. You can always apply for separate PP later or at same time.

  9. Hi all, We are just starting planning on a plot that we bought a year ago. Working with an architect we know and trust. Looking to build a family house for ourselves, and perhaps do it a couple more times over our lives, as I imagine it is something that you get better at. Looked for somewhere to ask my newbie questions when they come up - so here I am. Thanks for having me.

  10. How about a slimline cylinder actually build in to a tall unit. Like a fridge?

  11. Used as thermal barriers and solar filters. Without changing the composition of the glass itself, it is used to improve thermal and solar performance of float glass.

  13. In this case, it may be in your interest to define your own curtilage. Not only on a drawing but also by erecting some kind of boundary. A simple post and rail fence should be sufficient, make it look permanent but keep in mind you may need to move it. Keep the area reasonably in proportion to the house, one purpose of defining domestic curtilage is to restrict urban sprawl in the countryside.

  14. I have found a similar one at B&Q for about 20 quid. This transition trim is the only one I found that makes sense in this application.

  15. Fitted the Rehau manifolds today and all the appliance ends. Took a bit of practice with the forming tools to get the fittings right. Makes for a neat install given we have 19 pipes there.

  16. You can just make out the word austenitic (?) on the channel in the photos but I think that just a type of stainless steel. Some 3D printers are held together with T nuts. You put them in the channel, turn them 90 degrees and tighten a screw to fix in place. Something similar would probably work here.
