Good point, my missus tends to keep buying till the fridge is full then we end up throwing some away ? there is only the two of us mostly.

I hate it when my missus does a Costco shop, because she always buys more than we can comfortably fit in the fridge and freezer. It takes a good three or four days before we can easily access everything again. 

Thankfully it's a bit of a hike to Costco, so this doesn't happen more than once a month or so.

Went through this journey with our new build and ended up with a Samsung French door fridge-freezer that ticked our requirements list. Not cheap but been a pleasure to use - family of 4 including 2 teenage boys. http://www.samsung.com/uk/refrigerators/multi-door-rfg23uers/

 

Our criteria:

• more space than the standard 600mm can provide
• double-width french doors rather than tall american doors, much easier to use and increased usable shelf space
• smaller freezer and larger fridge (approx 65/35 split)
• quiet in operation given open plan layout
• proper steel exterior and not plastic dressed as steel given open plan layout
• metal rear cover not plastic (fire hazard)

This comes with ice and water dispenser, not something i really wanted (loses quite a lot of space as noted by others) but options are limited here. Also, once we solved an issue with a rattling cover plate on the rear (poor design, it flaps around so compressor vibrations made it rattle), pretty quiet in our open-plan lounge / diner / kitchen. Audible when near it but not obtrusive.

 

Samsung have a metallised sticker on the front which was a b**er to remove (I hate latent advertising or labels). But with a bit of friendly persuasion, come-off it did.

That seems fair enough lol. I always seem to return from the supermarket with stacks of multi buy offers and try to freeze the rest given that there’s only me here. I often chuck stuff out or give it to the dogs to make room for new stuff. It’s that Venus vs Mars thing again I reckon . 

 

I don’t have an American fridge freezer. I have 2 integrated fridge freezers and a separate integrated fridge. Freezer space is more important to me than fridge space so one of the fridge freezers should have been a full height freezer probably. I have to have a separate freezer for my dogs’ food too.

Incidentally if anyone is in need of one, I have a Bosch chest-freezer which is free to anyone who wants to collect. Will post details over at the Marketplace.

 

I am currently trying to persuade all my friends with toddlers and educational fridge-magnets that their little darlings do not need to know about meat, vegetables, snacks, and so on so that I can have those words to be an index to the shelves in the other half. Not working so far.

That will be irritating TBH as you MUST desire a change before then surely? . I hate my washing machine but can't really justify buying a new one until it breaks. I hope it doesn't last until 203x .

I have a 15 year old Whirlpool USA Fridge /Freezer.......water/ice dispenser is hardly ever used, some large very expensive parts, digital display and various pcb's have been replaced over recent years but have been covered by an annual repair plan for parts and labour since the warranty ran out!

Wouldn't be without our annual service contract for our Hotpoint WMD960 washing machine. It's crap!

I have a very similar Liebherr freezer as it was the only built in freezer I could find with an ice maker.

 

I stuck with cheaper Siemens for the fridge.

 

I really wanted to get these models from Siemens. They are integrated, but they replace an entire 600mm cabinet and are 212cm high so the same height as a full height unit.

 

But for some inexplicable reason they cost almost £4000 each versus less than £1000 for a standard 177cm high integrated Siemens fridge and freezer. I really cannot see why they were so expensive. The kitchen designer tried to spec Gaggenau ones which are exactly the same models but with stainless steel interior and cost around 50% more again. I was gobsmacked. She also tells me a lot of people buy SubZeros at around £12k. It's still just a fridge!

 

Basically you can spend as much as you want, someone will be willing to take your money.

Mine’s a Hotpoint AQM8D (not my choice). Never been serviced or loved in 9 years and the bloody thing still keeps going. Dishwasher and dryer have both gone to the kitchen in the sky in that time!

Go into Harrods and look at their display - from left to right there are SubZero and Wolf and from memory I think we added the display up to around £300k..... and it’s not that big ..!!

In America lots of ovens are 750mm side which I think is a better size than our 600mm standard.

 

I don’t know why you can’t get them here, you can buy a Wolf one at £4000. I can’t see it offers anything extra for the money. They’re not even that reliable from what I read

Have a large breakfast or a decent lunch before food shopping.

My freezer is a my local corner shop, a 24/7 Tesco Extra.  Been known to buy a frozen pizza and a new router at 6AM, fantastic.

I agree with that, and I'm terrible for overshopping when I'm hungry.

 

Unfortunately, my wife has a list all made up, so it doesn't matter whether she's hungry when she goes.

My ‘corner shop’ is 8 miles away so I can’t just nip out for milk. Living on my own most food comes in packets or portions meant for 2 or more so there is generally something left over that needs to be stored in a fridge or freezer. I do agree with the don’t shop while hungry comment though although I often have a list.
