BotusBuild Posted yesterday at 12:27 Posted yesterday at 12:27 One of the things we paid someone to do for us. Spines are powder coated. Cabling for lights runs inside the spines. Steps made from walnut kitchen worktops. Spindles are solid walnut. Glass is 10mm toughened from Cornwall Glass. Why walnut? It goes with the breakfast bar made from the walnut tree we cut down, also made by same person (Principle Constructions based in Cornwall). 11
-rick- Posted yesterday at 12:31 Posted yesterday at 12:31 Nice! Thats the first time I've seen the transparent blocking approach to having an open stair that complies with regs. Be interested how that works out (cleaning, etc). Handrail to be installed on the right?
BotusBuild Posted yesterday at 12:47 Author Posted yesterday at 12:47 No plans for a handrail at this point in time

MPH243 Posted 23 hours ago Posted 23 hours ago (edited) I like the walnut and that it came from your tree. It is also very different colour from nearly all the other stairs you see now. Edited 23 hours ago by MPH243 1
crispy_wafer Posted 23 hours ago Posted 23 hours ago That’s interesting, and very nice, you must be pleased and proud of that? It’s nice you’ve incorporated something you chopped down too. 1
Big Jimbo Posted 23 hours ago Posted 23 hours ago Looks fab. Well done. Just make sure you coat the timber with something that is UV resistant. Otherwise, in the same way as Mapel turns a bit orange in the sun. Your Walnut will "Fade to Grey" as the song said.
crispy_wafer Posted 22 hours ago Posted 22 hours ago Can I ask how you lifted the stairs. I’ve got a steel mono spine and, on my own trying to work out methods to lift and manoeuvre.

Oz07 Posted 20 hours ago Posted 20 hours ago Lovely. Any idea of a ballpark figure. I've been considering a cut string staircase for upcoming project. Won't be as wow factor as that but will be something different from the usual white string oak handrail carpeted stairs job.

-rick- Posted 20 hours ago Posted 20 hours ago 6 minutes ago, BotusBuild said: Just shy of £10k How much of that is the wood? Walnut is pricey, but so is the cost of getting someone to mill down your own tree. Curious how that stacks up?
BotusBuild Posted 19 hours ago Author Posted 19 hours ago @-rick-, note that none of the milled wood is in the staircase, thats just in the breakfast bar. The wood for the staircase was about £2200 1
Russell griffiths Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago Some of our building regs are bloody ridiculous
ProDave Posted 4 hours ago Posted 4 hours ago Once signed off, I would remove the glass panel from under the bottom tread. It adds nothing to safety and will impede the hoover. 1
