Would you know what is the purpose of that pedestal?

Hi All,
I keep wondering what is the purpose of this pedestal.

It's in the living room next to the old fireplace but this was replaced with a gas heater I believe decades ago.
Is this some sort of stand? There is nothing above it.

Looks like my mum's old house. All the rage in the 70's. Agreed - masonry TV stand.

 

Edit: to be fair to dear old mum & dad, theirs was real sandstone and had a superb chunk of teak on top - about 1.5" thick...

Yep, knocked one of those out in our first house.  Then chased out the wall and rewired the plug socket to get it down to a sensible height...

Yes, and if you're lucky, empty.  Please tell me you're going to take it out; you'll be amazed at how much bigger the room looks when you do.

Put a barn door in and rent the space out.  Got to be worth £600 a month to a desperate Millennium.  They need somewhere to stay before going to work in the phone shop.

You bet it's not a space saver 😂 unless someone is into domestic tombs or bunkers.

My uncle had a top-loading Betamax and he had to slide it out to access it!!

That is actually quite cool. The rest of the empty space behind the VCR is stuffed with secret tapes I reckon.
