Expand That made me laugh. I don't know why, be it reminded me of when i did a cinema for a client. He said to me after "You can't watch porn on it, because it gives you a huge inferiority complex" I think you can all guess why. 1

AliG Posted October 25, 2020 Posted October 25, 2020 Just watched this week's episode with the family. We all hated it. I didn't mind the concrete boxes too much, can't imagine them being most people's choice, but the interior was not to our liking at all. Funnily enough one of the owners said that the utility room was their favourite and it was nice. The kitchen was way too dark despite there being lots of windows elsewhere. I couldn't understand the bare metal stair replacing the original stair and the architect saying that they wanted to lean into the dark narrow hall and make it even darker. Painting the front of the house black was a shocker. This is why we have so many conservation areas and planning laws. The week before was OK, although again why paint the bricks. 1
Declan52 Posted October 25, 2020 Posted October 25, 2020 For what they paid in steel and concrete they could have built that entire thing from block and rendered it smooth and still had more than enough to fully kit out that house.

Mr Punter Posted October 25, 2020 Posted October 25, 2020 It did not improve the image of architects. They did not make the ugly bit any better and in fact spent almost no time or money on it. Just added an unpleasant extension at strange angles. Given the £200k + and three years, it was woeful.

To me this was an example of architects using client's money to try new ideas or enhance their portfolio. I found the internal black box with a roof window right next to it just a shockingly bad decision. I must admit I am a big fan of Laura from "Your home made perfect". Don't think she had a single design on this show I didn't like. Doesn't mean her real clients get the same treatment but this down-to-earth approach is great.

I didn't really get what the rationale was for the angles, they just kinda shrugged it off by saying it would be interesting to look at?! Your home made perfect drives me absolutely crazy, I actually stopped watching it. The people on it, always set this mind bending brief, where they want something out-there, a new way of living etc for 20k, then they pick the safe option which doesn't answer the brief they set! It happens all the time and I'm not criticising anyone for it, but the irish boy must get driven mad when he designs to the brief and gets dropped when they actually have to commit to building it...

Expand This is the thing : as a professional you notice things I just ignore. To me most people say "I have that much, do your best, these are the things we are after". Although I think in many programs the budget wasn't that low actually. It's in Sarah Beeney who had several people in a row planning to renovate for 7-10-20K. The Irish guy loves his bench seating and split levels and weird stuff. Pods, upside down building. Some of those look really good but practicality is almost invariably lacking. I think in one of his designs you'd have to walk 50+m to get from the kitchen to the main bedroom. Bench seating may be OK for rare occasions but OMG it's such a hassle when you have to use it 3 times a day. I have no vision, imagination, but I really like most stuff to be practical, substance first. Some people can afford both - I can only shrug and say "I could go for it if I had too much money". Expand Had all the same thoughts while watching We used to love GD and all these shows before we actually built a house and now I can't really watch them as so many things are skipped over.

I couldn't decide if the choices here were those of the architects or the owners. If it's the owners, then fair enough, it is their money, but I couldn't help but think they would not have come up with this on their own. Indeed this house broke many of the rules I would set for sensible design - Narrow hall, multiple floor levels, weird shaped rooms, no natural light to the hall, etc. Planning is so random, they would't allow the slim bricks last week as not in keeping but allowed this totally not in keeping house. Last night was disappointing as the architects were not precious, listened to the client and the solution was near to budget. Where is the sport in that?
