  1. Been clearing surface trees and scrub (mainly to stop birds nesting but also saved money) and I got advice on here about safety equip for a chainsaw. Thank you SO much, I was going to use a normal builders hat but instead followed your wise advice and got the proper forestry helmet with ear defenders and visor together with the chainsaw trousers, gloves and boots. Job is 3/4 done, taken down 6 trees (used wedges)and absolutely delighted. Safety equip perfect too for clearing really jaggy overgrown area double my height with loopers. Even managed to clear most of the debris using my trailer when I was in the area anyway. We have lovely neighbours and one does wood turning so delighted to be able to give him some of the trunks. Cheers again .
  2. So PP is in my and husbands name for whole thing (presumably architect did that to save money). At the moment it's semi detached cottages in a terrible state. We are building two separate properties, one we will live in with a granny flat for my mother. Sister is in the other. Shared access in middle. It will be block build and after reading about insurance thought we might get the SE to check it a number of times going up instead. (Obviously still getting other insurance like public liability). So does that mean I have to do the vat reclaim for all of the development? Properties are in both sis and our names.
  3. So I think we are within a few weeks of getting planning permission. Architect mentioned we need a structural engineer. How do we choose one? Also is there a list of stages/ points to remember when doing a self build? Like last night reading how I need to book DNO separately from meter move. Its hit or miss that I realise something needs scheduled at the mo. (Family development so we could divvy up jobs. )?
  4. Hi Ralph, lovely house. What have you clad the sides with, top and bottom?
  5. Just been reading about this..https://www.techadvisor.com/news/gadget/samsung-freestyle-3812086/ We have an ancient 40" samsung hanging on the wall, still a decent pic.

  7. Cable ties are so brilliant - good job with this, very impressed.
  8. Ah Gus, I agree entirely with what you said. I buy a sack of wild bird feed every week as it is. The house is near an ancient woodland too and in a different lifetime I studied ecology.
  9. Think I have a chimney sweep who will do it. Hope to get it done in next few days. Cheers
  10. Yep but maybe we could add glass doors in that gap....
  11. We are intending to put in a sink to encourage everyone to wash their hands with soap and hot water in the way in. It's a rectangular area. Door to left to ours, mums granny flat to right. Just wondering how to make it look less utilitarian...
  12. Been looking at these, I know there are other brands doing similar. Copper I believe has similar properties, copper bannisters and taps are good re covid. https://www.microban.com/schneider-electric
  13. 5 chimneys. 4 in a group. Oh and thankyou to all those who have advised me re the chainsaw and getting the right safety equipment. I listened to your advice and it's going well. Much appreciated.
  14. Remember to put in some external sockets, especially handy at christmas. Get the ones with the on/off switches, some don't have them which is silly since you have to pull out the darn plug.
  15. I haven't cataracts but I need variofocal glasses with a serious script. I love decent lighting, and really want to plan it into our build. Daughter got me a military grade torch for christmas. Love it!
  16. The amount of wee tips I am gathering from here. It's really good. Joe90 said 'I specified parliament hinges to our outward opening doors on the conservatory so they could open 180’ past the cills and be clipped open in summer.' 1'
  17. revolving bookcase on grand designs the other night
  18. I wonder how mechanical ventilation works with granite worktops and fireplaces?
  19. Problem with granite is it sets off a Geiger counter.
  20. Hello, we hope to be demolishing in March and I am concerned that birds nest every year in feb in chimneys. Is there a way I can put them off without going on roof? I have a chimney sweep brush that goes on rods, if i leave it up would that work?

  23. Hiya, I was watching a programme on you tube and saw the householders use an industrial roofing, large panels topped with tin on top of polystyrene . It went on fast and was cheap. No idea how insulating it is...
