Where does the UK borrow money from? The money the UK borrows comes from the private sector, usually financial institutions like pension funds and banks. It raises this cash from bonds - also known as gilts.

Ah understood. Well that wouldn't work very easily I think the management of it would be a nightmare, not from the Grid and meter side but from the user side. Wanting to charge your car and then having to wait 2 hours until the peak period is over is one thing when your at home but at a charging point in the freezing cold. hmm.... Talk about charging anxiety! Everyone would want vehicles with a 500 mile range!

The only problem with nuclear power is the containment of waste and the fallout from a power plant destruction. I think we have to make smaller power plants that if destroyed will not kill the human race. How this would work I do not know, but if this can be achieved then it will gain my vote.

Actually the simple fix is to stop producing children, oh and wait.

We already run our own charging system for the EV, however there are particular requirements to make this work: The EV has a range of about 250 to 300 miles. (large storage) It does about 5000 miles a year.(low milage) When home the EV is plugged in all the time. (often home all day) The charger is the 3kW type. (low and slow charging) The charger will only charge if the PV produces at least 2.5kW during winter or 3kW during summer, unless overridden. (control system) We have a 5.12kW PV system.(large PV array) Based on the Isle of Wight(one of the sunniest areas in England) Therefore our car would not help with the grid as we do not charge during the night 99% of the time (only twice last year). However if there was a system where everybody plugged there vehicle in when they parked in say a carpark, allowing excess energy to charge the vehicles, this would be a great benefit. Now that would work. But this will need the powers that be to deal with the problem and not the cause.

The biggest challenge is storage. We produce all of our home and EV needs, if only we could install a practical storage system. In the UK the average energy loss through distribution is 8%. The 4 main energy demands we have are building heating, hot water, cooking and the EV. (however the EV is more like a mobile energy store for us). Back to the original subject: So to save us from high energy bills the decision is to borrow money at the highest interest rate for 14 years to put off paying until future dates when one way or another we will then have to pay the original amount and interest. Lovely. The pot that this money comes out of is the taxpayers: yours and mine. Meanwhile, this handout strategy, whilst most needed for some, will become an expectation when something unexpected happens. What happened to the idea of a hand up rather than a hand out. Yes it maybe too late for this winter, but what about the next, and the next, and the next, and the next, and the next, and on and on. Reacting to the symptoms and not the cause! Dah! Too many people, businesses and countries have borrowed too much.

Well this for us, has been as a result of improvements in new models. We found, even only going a low milage each year, 140-170 mile range was not enough. The newer model has a range between 240-300miles. Because when parked at home we leave it plugged in to a 13amp charger (2.5kW?) which only charges when the PV produces over 3kW during summer or 2.5kW in the winter we now find we rarely have to override this and charge from the mains. We also found in the winter that we often have a couple of sunny days in a row and the new EV will store up enough to last a week. So far this year we have charged via mains during 1 week when in Devon and about 6 other times. Its our mobile battery store.

Yes our EV needs little work. However the tyres wear out quicker and have to be different to allow for the resistance to turning caused when going down hill and charging the battery...
-
Very true. Our batteries I think are guaranteed for 80,000. I think the battery replacement cost is about £12,000 at present.... Our other car is one I bought new 15 years ago and would have cost about 9k in todays money.

Hi @Alwayslearning22 I assume the building has the "Press system fittings. You are right, pipes can have different inside diameters even with the same outside diameters. Some pipes require inserts for compression fittings I see they do Mlcp to compression fittings, however I have not seen compression fittings straight on to the Mlcp pipe. I also notice that on a "press" fitting there is an outside and internal sleeve, so the compression squeezes the outer sleeve towards the inner clamping the pipe, so I would expect a straight compression would not work. That being said I would give them a call to confirm. https://www.instantor.ie/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Instantor-Press-Unpriced-Issue-6-Nov22.pdf Good luck M P.S. I had never heard of the abbreviation mlcp before and had to look it up, or Instantor although I have seen that type being used many times.

You may wish to consider the alternatives that can come with a skylight... Manual or electric opening. Rain sensor or get wet when its left open by mistake. no blind, manual blind, electric blind. Consider the effect of solar gain to the room below as well.... Good luck M

No. Do you know the manufacturer?

Ecodan 8.5KW not reaching set water temp
Marvin replied to Gary68's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
Hi @Gary68 The fact that the flow temperature drops and won't recover suggests that the amount of heat coming out of the system is more than the ASHP puts in. If there was something with the pumps or valves, the flow temperature would reach temp but the house would be cold. I would insulate to death any external pipes from the ASHP to the building thermal envelope. Otherwise home looses more heat than expected / calculated. In the winter airtightness is a BIG heat loss factor. Without knowing your building design etc one can only guess.. Good luck M -
quote from k-rend site: Does the weather affect the product when being applied? K Rend should be applied when it is 5 degrees C and rising. It should not be applied in very windy conditions, direct sunlight or damp conditions. https://www.k-rend.co.uk/design-inspiration/frequently-asked-questions

I think they could have done with one of those gates at Wandsworth Prison!

From the look of the floor under the gate I guess the drive is not finished yet 🤣

Its mineral wool Assuming weep holes are in the bottom.... Check out what Knauf say. https://www.knaufinsulation.co.uk/products/dritherm-cavity-slab-32 Allow airflow to the cavity but stop further rain: Brick on top, plastic sheet and brick above to hold plastic will do it. Good luck. M

How to improve the look of this dodgy workmanship
Marvin replied to Monz87's topic in Bricklaying, Blockwork & Mortar
This sort of job would be a labour of love. Personally I would do what @Conor says and make it a feature rather than trying to correct it. I assume you purchased the property after the garage conversion so you did not notice when buying? -
Hi @Bodger No reason why not 2 doors. check with BCO. The garage one will have to open into the garage and the internal one into the room, I assume. Don't forget the fire door frame has to be special as well - with intumescent strip and fire rated hinges and lock/latch, and covered key holes. Good luck M

Hi @ToughButterCup Suggest you use a bollard system that won't need the ground digging up when struck and a CCTV camera for those who don't want to stop and pay for the damage. Section 1(1) of the Criminal Damage Act 1971 creates an offence of destroying or damaging any property belonging to another person, whether intentionally or recklessly, without lawful excuse. This offence attracts a penalty of a term of imprisonment not exceeding ten years. Driving Without Due Care and Attention. S3 Road Traffic Act 1988 provides that it is an offence for a person to drive a mechanically propelled vehicle on a road or other public place “without due care and attention or without reasonable consideration for other persons using the road or place”. Driving without due care and attention carries a penalty of either a disqualification, or between 3 and 9 points. However... Trespass is not of itself a criminal offence. Good luck! Marvin

Hi @ToughButterCup Don't worry. your not being picked on. YOU'RE NOT THE ONLY ONE! SMART is an acronym for Smart Meters Are Really Thick

bathroom extractor fan keeps running
Marvin replied to Rob W's topic in Bathrooms, Ensuites & Wetrooms
3 wires in means it has a time delay function meaning it's supposed to run for a while before stopping after you turn it off. -
Hi @zoothorn This is the report, although I don't think it will help you understand. hot_water_cylinders_buffer_tanks_heat_pumps.pdf
