So at the bottom of a "long drop" it ends in a branch. That is going to go "splat" that should be a rest bend at the bottom.

I like most self builders around here had no fencing whatsoever.

New series of Grand Designs 31st August 2022
ProDave replied to Thorfun's topic in Property TV Programmes
No I watched it all along. It's not a "building" program rather an entertainment program and they have to highlight all the difficulties. They would have had a field day with ours, unable to find a buyer for old house, sacked the builder (amicably because the original funding plan failed) and plan B was a do it all yourself 5 year build as you earn. I do often talk to the television "No that plan is not going to work" Hindsight is a wonderful thing. I wish they would talk more about insulation, U values, Air tightness results, SAP ratings, heating system etc, but then only us self builders would watch it. -
Look again at the instructions and at least make sure you have the flow and return manifolds the right way round AND the pump the right way round befoe going much further.
-
Basics: Is the manifold pump running? Have you tried adjusting the pump speed? Are you SURE the actuators are energised? Test by unscrewing one, that should result in full flow on that loop. The big question, is this new? i.e. has it EVER worked properly or has it just stopped working properly? Have the UFH loops been properly bled (usually using mains water and a hose)?

That might be referring to something like the Biodisk. Someone near here has one. If has a huge rotating drum with assorted paddles on it to agitate the contents and that is driven by a motor and gearbox. Twice in the time I have known her, it has failed, once it was the motor burned out and the second time the gearbox had seized. Both times I declined to do the repair. Whoever did it would have needed wellies or waders and a strong stomach to get down inside it to unbolt the motor / gearbox assembly and take them away for repair. I will stick to having to maintain an air blower pump in it's own little enclosure away from all the nasty stuff.

Hi and welcome. Look forward to the hydro thread.

Is that a camera angle thing or is there a bit of "downhill" pipe? If so you have created a trap that could fill with condensation or leakage from the roof vent over time.

Alternative broadband supplier questions
ProDave replied to ProDave's topic in Networks, AV, Security & Automation
Well in case BT are spiteful and want their router back, I picked up another one from freecycle and have set that up to provide my network drive facility. -
Yesterday evening my neighbour knocked on the door with two post feet. Today I have fitted them. Studs set in the blocks with resin, nuts not yet tightened down until it has had a good while to set properly.

Do foundations look right on house purchase?
ProDave replied to HazG's topic in House Extensions & Conservatories
It looks very narrow to me, either as an extension or a garage. Surprising as there is plenty of room to make it wider. To be honest I see possibly enough room for a whole new house? Have you investigated that possibility? -
Was the wall skimmed before or after the electrician fitted the back boxes? In any event the defect is trivial, a little filler to replace the plaster that has chipped off and touch up the paint.

Building a Block Workshop - ADVICE NEEDED!
ProDave replied to stunotch's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Why would it need BR's? It's surely under the size to require it? -
Minor works certificate who can sign
ProDave replied to Ian79's topic in Regulations, Training & Qualifications
Strictly speaking under wiring regulations you only need to be "competent" to issue electrical certificates. English and Welsh building regulations take that further with part P of the wiring regulations that demand registration with a competent body to self certify work that is notifiable, which the new consumer unit would be. If it was a NEW circuit for the spotlights, that would be outside the scope of a MWC and would be subject to instead an EIC Electrical Installation Certificate, and a new circuit is notifiable work in England and Wales so would require par P sign off so = contractor registered with a competent body. I see you have a NAPIT certificate there. Is this person actually a member of NAPIT? if not that is a whole extra set of wrongs if he is claiming to be. -
PV panels no battery, off-grid? Doomsday planning(!)
ProDave replied to Benpointer's topic in Photovoltaics (PV)
If the grid has failed that catastrophically, maintaining an electricity supply is the least of your troubles. Finding food and drinking water and making sure you get it not one of the other survivors will be your top priority. -
If you want it all open, I think the only way is a steel frame fabricated to support it all.

Soakers are in effect another form of hidden gutter. Their job is to catch any water that is not caught by the lead flashing on top of the tiles, most likely blown under by wind. So they still need to form a proper gutter so water flows down and out at the bottom. So there will need to be some form of upstand or turn up in the lead to prevent any such water just running off the side. So I think it highly unlikely you will get the detail right, just by shoving some lengths of lead under the tiles in situ without removing any.
-
I bet that is a joy to empty.
-
Well certainly lift the sliding part out, then you halve the weight to lift frame plus fixed pane. I know ours is smaller (3M wide total) but we lifted that with 4 blokes and 4 sets of suckers. Then lifted the sliding part in.

No, the only thing not allowed any more is a septic tank that discharges into a watercourse. Those were supposed to have been replaced a couple of years ago. It has not stopped them, my neighbour still has a ST discharging into our burn (and it honks at times) and a house half a mile away has just sold for the SECOND time still with it's "illegal" ST discharging into a burn.
-
The only thing I can add is a new plant would have to comply with building regs which in Scotland would mean 5 metres away from a building or boundary and 10 metres from a road or watercourse. I think the distances are different in English building regs. But you would not want to put it where the cess pit is, you would want it elsewhere and when redundant fill in the old pit. As for type, most of us here would recommend one of the air blower type and I would certainly advise against the ones that have rotating mechanical parts.

Daikin ASHP outdoor temperature over-reading
ProDave replied to Bob77's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
The sensor is probably inside a little plastic box and a little sun shining on it could well raise the temperature in that box to 25 degrees or more. I can't see what would have been wrong with a north facing wall on a boundary, it would not have got any sun so would be a more true reflection of outside temperature. -
Who in their right mind would use a company like the one recommended above? Lousy wix.com website and no hint of who they would be submitting an enquiry to, no hint of actual company name, address or how to contact them. It must be some sort of scam, no real company would advertise like that.

Completion Certificate Is In!
ProDave replied to Ralph's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Ah but now you have the completion certificate you can do all the special jobs.......... -
Don't ring anybody other than the local DNO. Care to post a map or plan showing where they are are and what direction they appear to run in?
