Mid build fire risks, what & how?
Barney12 replied to epsilonGreedy's topic in Project & Site Management
Plumbers scorching timbers is a major source of site fires. Example image here: https://buyersask.com/plumbing/burnt-wood-near-plumbing-fittings/ but I totally disagree with their "not of major concern" point. @Nickfromwales and I have both done "time" on cruise ships (not together, heavens could you imagine sharing a cabin with his arse ). Their adherence to hot works rules is a MASSIVE focus. Its sadly lacking in general construction IMHO. -
Building in provision for a later ASHP.
Barney12 replied to epsilonGreedy's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
Interesting thread as I'm still minded to install an ASHP to bypass my reliance on the Sunamps for UFH. I would then use my Sunamps purely for DHW. I got Nick to put two 32mm flow and return pipes and a duct for cabling to an outside point which current sit unused in the plant room. 240v is also provisioned too with 2.5mm SWA. As others have done my intention is to use the slab as a buffer to keep things simple. The other benefit is the ability to cool the slab too. The spreadsheet above is interesting which leads to a further question; Is there a way to calculate the lag? I.e. If say the slab was at 18 degrees and you needed to get it to 23 degrees to hit your target room temp how long would it take for the room to warm up? Ta! -
Why do I fear that Sunamp will blame your red neon status fix on the contractor failure. After all based on your previous post they claim it effects operation of the controller????
-
As in publicly admitting that their products don't work as advertised? Or a public listing on the stock exchange? I wouldn't think either are likely!

Beautiful house. ?

Can the mods split this thread up. We now seem to have three topics running!
-
Agreed!
-
Agreed. Further, I can confirm that my own testing (and fault finding) matches @JSHarris findings in terms of how the system operates. Of course that operation could be deemed as not a 'fault' or 'problem' but at the very least is at odds with their own marketing materials and specification.

Exactly that set lives permanently in my main tool bag. Worth its weight in gold.

Wow. I would LOVE to hear the technical explanation for this disruption! Thank heavens I didn’t use grey cable clips to fix my 4mm T&E supply cable to the Sunamp controller. Oh, hang on, I did so that’s probably why my Sunamp units failed. ???
-
Looking good. Nice to see you’ve used the Tornado plaster lights. Should have asked Nick for a commission payment Oh and I can verify he has an arse like a sewer ?

+1. It’s what I used for fascia and gutters. Easy to fit and looks excellent. You get the look of aluminium with the ease of fitting of uPVC. List prices are high but I managed to get 35% discount by shopping around the merchants. Still doesn’t make it cheap though in comparison to uPVC.

Bath Surround / Boxing In, and concealed pipework
Barney12 replied to Onoff's topic in Bathrooms, Ensuites & Wetrooms
I don’t share your confidence. Finally something more uncertain than B.... ? -
It does work but not for that long. I find I have to treat the areas around my camera’s three or four times a year. I’ve tried all the various ‘friendly’ alternatives but none work effectively.
-
Again, a similar situation. I’ve been considering carving this cost out of the contract but it then means I’ve lost the ‘complete solution’ I wanted to achieve.
-
Funnily enough this was the original plan but on the recommendation of the landscaping co we’ve changed to South Cerney. Apparently the size grading is better suited to the Nida system we plan to use.
-
Alas it’s a two parking areas serviced by two driveway accesses so it doesn’t lend itself well to that plan. Agreed though it is expensive. Another example of where building on a slope adds cost!
-
Thanks, pretty similar then.

Hi All I'm trying to finalise my landscaping contract (its a very large project over 1.2 acres). I've actually had huge problems finding a contractor to do the work (after selecting one who then cancelled on me at the last minute) but I think I've finally found one I'm comfortable with. The part of the quote that stands out is the driveway/parking areas. Its circa 320 m2 and the cost is coming in at roughly £100 m2 to include all labour and materials. This is for (broadly): Membrane 100mm MOT1 Sand Binding Nida Gravel (stabilisation mat) 50mm South Cerney Gravel pinned steel edging (Everedge Pro) Note that I can't have tarmac, hard surface or resin bound a)due to planning restrictions b)drainage may be an issue (sloping site) Anyone have any thoughts?
-
If it helps, my MBC terms (2016) were: 10% Deposit 15% Sign off of drawings 20% on foundation material delivery 20% on frame delivery (first load) 15% on completion 10% on air test pass I though that those terms were reasonable.

Does anyone have a couple of Schwegler bat boxes?
Barney12 replied to vivienz's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
You will be fine. The habibat boxes are the preferred choice of the BCT https://www.bats.org.uk/our-work/buildings-planning-and-development/bat-boxes/external-ready-made-bat-boxes-integrated-bat-boxes -

Habibat http://www.habibat.co.uk/ have a pretty much identical box and are the prefered choice around here. We actually made our own boxes for internal and integrated spaces. The ecologist provided the required specs for the openings, roost spaces and squeeze boxes as required.
