I'm looking now at the slightly eye watering prices for Windows and fitting here and wondering how on earth the suppliers justify them ..?? I may have to go the uPVC route for a number of reasons - not through choice - although it will be triple glazing. My window fitter has said for a front door, two French doors, rear single door, 5 downstairs and 3 upstairs Windows it will be 3 days and £850... That includes the sealants and fixings too. Tape will be done by me afterwards so even with that its another £200 and I'm just struggling to see how suppliers want big 4 figure numbers to fit Windows ..??

Ebay ..?? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/262337006061 cheap and cheerful gets you started, you can always change the panels at a later date. Pocket or silent generator is something like this - beware though they are highly nickable..!! https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221468721602 -
That chimney is around 32" in total and is stood on the arch top - it was from a reclaim yard, is Victorian and as it had a crack at the bottom and a chip out of it he charged me £20 rather than £95 for a perfect one .! It does draw well ..... Inner some and baking floor are hard refractory bricks, first course of dome bricks are soldier course then they are shaped and cut into half. Mortar is a blend of fire clay and OPC. Outer bricks are half a pallet of furnace edge rejects that cost me 10p each..! Insulation is a mix - under the base is a layer of thermalite blocks, over the dome is a vermiculite fill plus foil and ceramic fibre wool. I put thermocouples in various places but they have long given up - more of a novelty tbh ..! Plans are here https://www.fornobravo.com/store/pompeii-oven-instruction-ebook-v2-0-pdf/

Bury them well - not too deep though - and they will be fine. I had an issue with one or two in fermacell in a bathroom ceiling that weren't deep enough and they showed through.

24v Inverter Requirements for 240v Horse Clippers
PeterW replied to Fallingditch's topic in Energy Storage
24v inverters are invariably found in truck supply stores as they are used by drivers for everything from kettles to TVs and microwaves - they are also cheap ! If it's only for the clippers and occasional use then any will do. I wouldn't pay out for an expensive one - quick eBay search and you'll find them for around £30 upward from UK sellers. If you have space on the roof then a solar panel will trickle charge a 12v battery with a cheap conditioner so may be worth putting the batteries in parallel and then just letting them charge at the stables ..? -
Mine has a chimney that is about 18" above the dome and once lit there is little smoke. I built it into the corner of the garden on a block work plinth and extended one side to put a BBQ on it as well - it's a kettle one that sits on the top. Underneath there are cupboarda and a wood store so plenty of storage too
-
Sounds like a plan..!
-
You could wire it to 415 3 phase and it would be self drying too ....
-
But how do you level the tiles if they are uneven like slate ..??? or is that another question for another day ...??
-
So if I let the oven out after a 3-4 hour use, it's still at 200c the next morning when the door is put in. Gotta love thermal mass..!
-
Got one, built from the Forno Bravo plans and I love it ..! Too dark for photos now but it was a few weekends work and worth every penny - ideal way to use up left over materials too ..!

Do you ever feel like giving up

"Best solutions" are subjective if the requirements aren't clearly documented. If you consider the triangle of cost, time and quality then if you move one you move them all - if you find a good construction PM who knows how to deal with trades and also is incentivised on cost saving perhaps, then you will be more likely to meet your outcome. You can get one quote or ten quotes - chances are they will all vary by up to 30-40% across the range but unless they are all for exactly the same item then you can't do a comparison by price alone. Getting ten quotes will also take time, and you will get some that quote off the envelope as they just don't want the work. I've found the industry also works through networks and a good PM will have a black book of contacts - they will also be known to suppliers who will know the first price needs to be the best price and this cuts down the hassle factor. Decent PMs charge upwards of 10-15% of contract value but can easily save that and more on a build but you have to be prepared to let some of it go and let them have the authority to make decisions - if you can't see yourself doing that then going the PM route may not be for you and the alternatives are turnkey or main contractors. -
Advice for removing uPVC door and frame
PeterW replied to Calvinmiddle's topic in Doors & Door Frames
Unless it has concrete screws holding it in through the frame - check for a gold frame fixer or screw caps in the sides. -
Never heard of them, but have had some really good prices from Pears Stairs https://www.pearstairs.co.uk/ They also do glass / wood staircases - https://www.pearstairs.co.uk/glass-staircase/

+1 to Ferdi's suggestion. get some time away and chill - I've done narrowboats when I want to relax as the world going past at 5mph is perfect ..! And make a list of what needs to be done when you get back - don't do it beforehand, and don't take it with you. Fresh pair of eyes when you've had a break is really good to refocus things. -

Large Downstairs WC or Separate Plant Room??
PeterW replied to Barney12's topic in New House & Self Build Design
+1 to the rectangular shower - just make it the size of the alcove and it's easier ! I would also make the plant room door open outwards as it will match the rest and also give you somewhere easily accessible to dump the Hoover etc ..! -
I have a mate in the leisure industry and they nickname the hot tubs in the hotel the "bucket of skin soup...." My brother had one - not cheap to heat and if you buy branded chemicals it gets pricey. You can get cheaper stuff which is just as good. Apparently if you fill them with rainwater it's slightly better, I've also heard the cedar ones keep the water cleaner for longer although a wood fired cedar hot tub is a long way off for me ..!!!
