Can I harness the excess heat in my conservatory ?
PeterW replied to joe90's topic in General Plumbing
Things like the Earth Save cylinder have a small ASHP in the top and take hot air from the house into the water. Not sure you could put a big ASHP in a conservatory as they shift a lot of air. -
The joy of self compacting stuff, we just ran a Bull float over it and it was done and everyone went home ..!

Air source heat pump ..! Use it to draw the heat from the air and will also cool the space too -
Buy a new lintel .... £35 or so that you don't need to be worrying over ..?? who has sized those btw...?? Long span for a 65mm prestressed lintel unless there are supports I can't see ..?

Thanks @TerryE - now going "analog" as I've got a 3 way valve with a built in changeover switch coming which will do the thermostat change for me - just have to redo my wiring diagram ..!!
-
Sorry @TerryE - need to switch two thermostats over when a 3 way valve switches over to drive the correct temperature to an ASHP. Using 5v logic and 12v valves was the original idea but then found 220v versions of the same 2 way and 3 way valves. Issue is that ASHP needs a 220v thermostat as a controller signal but wanted to do everything in 5/12v so it was easier for me. any clearer..??
-
Was ideally to switch over both poles of a pair of 220v thermostats using 5v logic. Preference was SSD purely because there were no moving parts and easier to isolate both sides.

Why are my LED flood lights semi-illuminated when off?
PeterW replied to readiescards's topic in Lighting
That is bizarre as I had that exact conversation on Friday with someone who insisted that PAT testing had "standard" reports and I said I'd never seen two the same. I also said our last report was electronic (PDF emailed to me) with just stickers applied to the devices/cables and I was told that was "illegal"... All from an NICEIC registered company who want my PAT business ...- 29 replies

My issue was finding solid state relays that are DPDT. I may have found a way to simplify a stat changeover though using the valve change over switch assuming it fully isolated - the joy of using off the shelf parts ..!

UFH looks good - have you used a Wunda manifold or someone else's ..??
-
Correct - you can either use the mifi hotspot that EE provide and then route it using something like a TP 4G wireless router or get one of these and put the SIM directly in it. http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/tp-link-archer-mr200-4g-lte-wifi-router-with-sim-card-slot-a54xu

I would tape the top of all of those ducts including capping the water properly as concrete gets everywhere ...

SipGate transfers the caller ID of your line from memory so it's correct.
-
Do you know who's mast it is..?? EE allow quota sharing so you can put a data SIM into a mifi unit and use the allowance from the phone contract. Others do a similar thing with data only SIMs for tablets etc. but the tablet doesn't know what it is being used for so it can go in pretty much anything.

self-build- Viable solution to energy efficient homes!
PeterW replied to Ted Nicholls's topic in Introduce Yourself
Mainly because a lot of us haven't got the faintest clue what they are about ..!! Self build and small builders account for a small percentage of overall house builds in the U.K. each year, but will account for a disproportionate number of high performing properties. Key reason ..?? We are not driven by shareholder profit ..!! If I take my 15-20% profit margin from a £300k new build then it's a lot of detail work that can make an ordinary building much better just by attention to detail and improving basic materials.- 17 replies

You can buy pharma grade propylene glycol for about £20 for 5 litres. At 20% it's good to -10c so in a normal circuit of 50 litres you could get away with £40 worth.
-
I use SipGate. I'm looking at the other way to you - just having a fibre broadband connection and no phone line (we all have unlimited minutes on EE / O2) and just using my SipGate number as the house number.

Idiot question ... can I plug it into a Linux machine ..? Or a rPI..?
-
Hence my thought of using a cheap indirect 900x450 tank as a buffer and only running the antifreeze in the supply circuit, split between the buffer and the DHW tank which means I would be running about 15 litres in the circuit but the down side is I don't think that's enough to keep the ASHP happy but could be wrong as I've got one running 12m of 28mm on to a Telford HP tank and it doesn't complain. Question then is what is the minimum head or pressure UFH can work at ..?? I would have 90 or so litres of buffer no more than 1m above the floor (and probably 500mm above the circ pump) if I left the tank basically as an open vented tank. Thoughts @JSHarris..?

@TerryE can it also log DHT22...?? would be interested all the same - ducts are in for mine in the slab and there are 10 on the bench.

I may order one or two to play with as they are quite neat but may also solve a problem or two with some oddly placed lights and an internal designer who seems to like to change her mind ....

Anyone come across these before ..?? Seem to be a cost effective controller for wiring multiple circuits and not having to chase walls or replace batteries. https://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/QUR304.html I can see how useful they could be in reducing the amount of wiring needed especially in complex areas such as vaulted ceilings or multi way switching. So what am I missing ..??

Best practice is not to try and have large numbers of flows into a single IC especially if the main branch is only 110mm. What @Nickfromwales is suggesting is correct - you would use 2 or 3 smaller (ie 300mm) ICs to collate the flow from say 2 WCs or stacks, and then feed them to a further IC later in the chain, with a single 110mm (or 160mm if flow dictates) leaving the property. Do you have an M&E plan for the build as if you are looking at multiple WCs then be mindful of Part H and the various depths and falls required.

Ok but insulating it and stopping air infiltration to meet BRegs along with getting the minimum standards etc are all interlinked. You've said yourself that getting an insulated garage door is easy, getting an air tight one is nigh on impossible. Whats driving the requirement for a heated garage ..? Costs may far outweigh any benefits on this one
