  1. I have a C&G in Plumbing and a HNC in Plant and Process Engineering, along with other higher qualifications. So not quite “walking in off the street”. Most of the large manufacturers offer the G3 course and some offer a discount to the value of the course off their products, if order within three months of taking the course.
  2. Has anyone done the G3 unvented water storage systems course, how difficult is it? How long is the training valid for? I only ask as I’m quite capable of installing the kit myself, the only bit I’m missing is G3. In a past life I was a Lloyds approved pressure relief systems maintenance technician and inspector, so understand the fundamentals.
  3. With the decarbonization of electricity, why would SAP be an issue?
  4. I’m told that the serious criminals tool of choice is the petrol Stihl saw. Two minutes and your through any door or steel container or van!
  5. I’m also one of those hesitating about the need for an ASHP. I’d also be interested to hear from Jeremy and @TerryE on their recent heating and hot water experience.
  6. 18 and 25kW are a bit on the big side for me.
  7. The other thing I forgot to mention, he can also turn various lights on and off from London, so when the CCTV alarmed he turned on some lights in the house and put radio 4 on. Anyone listening or looking inside would think someone was at home.
  8. Our nearest neighbour is about 200 metres away and with no street lights no one is going to come looking if an alarm goes off. I’m probably going to install cameras that sent an alert to my smart phone. A friend has some and he works in London. His went off recently when someone approached the house and started scooping around. His have a built in microphone and speaker, so he simply asked what they wanted, it had the desired effect, they left pronto!
  9. UFH isn’t designed to give a rapid response. It’s the sort of setup that takes hours to get to a working temperature, you leave the boiler running and let the room stat call for heat as and when necessary.
  10. @Conor, @Barney12. @oranjeboom. I’m also in the market for an ASH pump. How is the search for a competitively priced unit going? Maybe a bulk buy would save us some money? Anyone else spotted or been offered any good ASHP deals recently?
  11. Thanks for all the interesting replies. We’ve got our wills written and a few relatives and even fewer of the two dozen god children will no doubt be pleasantly surprised when we’ve gone. Both my mother and father as still in good mental and reasonable physical health, dad has just taken delivery of a new car, he’s 89. So hopefully we’ll have plenty of time to spend the lot.
  12. No SKIing for us, we don’t have kids. Mind you, we will be trying our best to spend or gift as much of our cash as we can. I was just interested on other people approach to the problem.
  13. My old system was the same, the two temperatures never matched. I wouldn’t loose sleep over this.
  14. You’ve built the house and it’s been valued and you think wow that’s worth more than I thought! Has anyone thought about Inheritance Tax Planning? How do you ensure the Tax man (or the old folks home!) don’t get their claws into your wad. Asking for a friend.
  15. I’m currently looking for an ASHP, who did you get yours off, was it a lone ebay seller or a company EBay seller? Any got any pointers to a good ASHP (for heating and cooling) for sale, something around 7 KW.
  16. The software it comes with is a bit old and not compatible with my PV?! Thanks for the suggestion thou, its the sort of thing I had in mind, something simple, plug and play!
  17. I’d like to start logging temperature, humidity and CO2 in the new house. Having read a few previous posts, Some of you built your own loggers, I don’t fancy that, (never really understood electronics!). So, can anyone recommend something off the shelf?
  18. Let’s say the Victron inverter costs £500. Why not pay the invoice, if you can call few lines of text in an email an invoice, less £500 for the Victron inverter they did not supply?
  19. Can I put the signal cable in the same duct as the power cable, or will there be a problem?
  20. As we’ve built a house that is highly insulated, we simply installed UFH to the concrete floor slab, we will have electric UFH in the bathrooms x3.. The reason I was pondering not buying the ASHP and tank was as a result of friend passing away and me questioning my own mortality! I’m 62, if I spent thousands on the kit would it be worth it,, what’s the payback time?
  21. Don’t they look too perfect? We want something is character, in the past we’ve used second hand common brick, some sooty, others with bits of paint still visible, the odd corner and edge chipped. This is the industrial feel we’re after.
  22. I’m not sure about power washing inside, after all the brick slips are for the stairwell walls. Thanks to everyone for the contributions. Having looked at the various potions were leaning towards either slips or the tiles. Ideally we’d like to look at some actual walls made of these things.
  23. Not quite what “her indoors” had in mind! She said her mum and dad had the chimney breast papered in that in the 1980s!
  24. I was wondering if I could us bricks cut in half and stick these onto a backer board fixed to the timber frame? That was we can hand pick the bricks, we’re looking for a fairly industrial, loft style, finish.
  25. We want a bit of a different look to our stairwell. We’re thinking steel stairs and a brick wall. As our new build is timber frame, how easy you’ll it be to install brick slips to the interior wall? Are there any cheap options when it comes to brick slips?
