  1. Every day is a school day (even fir old farts like me ?) https://spark.iop.org/energy-series-and-parallel-connections#gref
  2. Any idea what paint this was ?
  3. I use hammerite a lot, I find it seals rusty stuff well if applied thick enough (as long as flakey stuff removed), however the new water based stuff is rubbish in my opinion .
  4. Not heard of that one before, I like granite gravel.
  5. But like other things during the build I focussed on things I was capable of doing well and subbing out those I was not (plastering and paperwork !).
  6. Welcome @Crowbar hero, regarding ventilation MVHR will definitely cure your problem and also give the incoming air a temp boost, I have it and it’s very good. Yes UFH needs lower temperature water. I have a small ASHP that delivers 48’ water which is fine for DHW (with a larger tank to make up for blending down) and blended again to 30’ fir the UFH, the house is a constant 21’ and very comfortable. It’s a different heat to radiators as they are hotter and you feel the heat coming at you. I totally agree with @Marvin above, you only buy insulation once and can only really make the build airtight initially. My builder was great regarding these matters but most need careful watching to make sure your standards are maintained. I look forward to your progress and questions, this is a great forum with oodles of great knowledge.
  7. Our path and patio is laid to these but weeds grow in the gaps and I have to pressure wash to blow the weeds out annually. As an aside ours is laid on granite grit rather than sand and the pressure washing does not wash the granite away that can happen with sand.
  8. It’s what I went with in the end.
  9. No, pure guesswork ? I guessed my heating load from another previous buildhubber who had a similar sized house (and I got a cheap deal on Ebay so took a punt, the MVHR unit I bought, again on EBay was oversized but cheap (bankrupt stock), do you know what, I have never got round to balancing it even. note, I recently had a heating problem but that was my fault with a design presumption with the buffer tank (I can’t get it all right ?‍♂️).
  10. I have witnessed imprint concrete and was very impressed with the look and longevity. However my brother in law had a resin bound driveway and parts are already suffering from power steering pulling the surface apart in places.
  11. Conversely someone here or another forum worked out the cold bridge due to wall ties on a house was so small it was not worth the extra cost . Diminishing returns and all that. Saying that I did no calculations whatsoever for my build, I went with gut instinct (after other buildhubbers did their calculations) and I copied!.
  12. Obviously the BC does not want to sign it off, as I said before it depends on your local guys. I am sure he can, I can do electrical stuff as I used to be registered (many years ago) but as I am not currently registered I am not allowed to as I cant issue a certificate. @patp I would ring around your local HETAS engineers explaining the situation and see if anyone will help you out letting you do as much as you can yourselves. If you don’t ask you don’t get!
  13. True, but knowing me with paperwork I would have made mistakes, peace of mind did it fir me.
  14. Which ever you feel most comfortable doing (I just had to take a look at mine as I forgot and I mitred mine).
  15. It was previous posts like @jack above that made me use “the VAT man”, and spend my time doing stuff I enjoyed and didn’t get stressed about.?‍♂️ (Plus I got more back through him than his fee was).
  16. Wow that looks really good mate, well done you. As an alternative to metal sheet what about tiling, cheap tiles, end of line?, being ceramic they would be heat proof surely! Brick slips! ?
  17. We don’t know his budget ?‍♂️
  18. On the other hand £1500 is not a lot compared to your budget and if it will be a subject that your forever reminded of then bite the bullet and appease her. Conversely if you really like it then argue the toss. It’s you that has to live with her, not us ?‍♂️
  19. Give him a ring (can’t remember how much he charged), he is very accommodating and mention this forum as I know he reads it. Paperwork is not my thing and I didn’t want the worry as I know HMRC are a law unto themselves and can even fine you if you get it wrong.
  20. I would recomend you get a VAT specialist to do this, he will know exactly what to do in fact mine saved me money by claiming more than I expected so saved his fee and more. He even contacted suppliers for original invoices when I had copies. I can recommend https://www.vat431.co.uk And quite a few here have used him with good results ?
  21. Can you not plaster over those tiles? @nod will know!
  22. I did that but still ended up paying for them ?‍♂️
  23. (I know that and you know that ?)
  24. Explain that £1500 will be deducted from “her” kitchen budget ?‍♂️.
  25. I feel your pain but everything has to be agreed by both parties, perhaps you could both compromise on some middle ground?
