  1. I used a digger and driver (local farmer) for £150 a day. The things he done it that thing were death defying. He got more done in a day than I could of in a week.
  2. Ive got my eyes peeled. The ability to spray plaster would be useful.
  3. ‘What model Graco do you have? Ive stumbled across a “prostep” for sale. I think it might be a older model.
  4. I haven’t got money to waste on PV panels. I live in NW England. Its a pointless expense. I fail too see how PV in northern England or Scotland will help the planet. USA, China and India pump so much shit into the atmosphere home PV in a grey climate won’t help. I drive a 4WD truck and I want a Alfa quadrifoglio. I’m not the most green minded person I admit. Banning plastic bottles and bags would be the best thing we could do in terms of helping the planet with immediate effect. Better than any green tax the government cook up to hit us with.
  5. Do people fit PV because they want to be as green as possible? I can’t see the benefit financially now the FIT scheme has gone. Tbh I’m not even considering them.
  6. True. I usually avoid domestic tools but these are pricey.
  7. The professional Wagner machines are £1600. A bit misleading putting “pro” on a diy machine. Ill have a look on eBay ?
  8. I’m considering picking one of these up over the weekend. https://www.screwfix.com/p/wagner-control-pro-350m-electric-airless-paint-sprayer-520w/8314x Is it a good choice? Or is the Graco a better option?
  9. Width x height will give m2 for a wall
  10. Ieica make really good laser measures.
  11. You can use a purple “paint” that guarantees air tightness. https://www.ecomerchant.co.uk/liquid-blowerproof-brush-paint-on-airtight-sealing-membrane-5kg.html
  12. If keeping costs low is your aim. Cladding systems like that are not the best approach.

    Alibaba

They are for internal use. Sea freight isn’t bad but takes 4-6 weeks.

I’m thinking of ordering brick slips. The saving is considerable.

Has anyone used Alibaba? Prices are really good. I’m aware of import duty and shipping times. I’ve imported car parts from japan and USA in the past.
  16. I could live with that. I’m not that surprised prices are coming down a bit.
  17. The website I used for a quote refused triple glazing at that size.
  18. I’ve wasted a fortune on se retaining wall designs. Most were ridiculously over engineered. My wall is 4m x 12.5m. I had some really expensive quotes. The most expensive being a timber crib which was £65k. Every time I thought I had a solution (kingpost, soil nailing, pre cast panels) design cost was at least £6k. In the end I used huge Lego blocks. It’s a bit wider than I wanted but it cost less than £10k. It’s built on a incline foundation to reduce the width.
  19. The glass. Windows are 2.2m x 4m upstairs.
  20. Weight means triple glazing is not a option for me either.
  21. The design costs on the quotes I’ve received are much higher than £500.
  22. Thanks for all the replies and advice. My “team” is me, 2 farmers and 2 joiners ?. Myself and 2 farmers managed to build a huge retaining wall, so this should be relatively straight forward. Famous last words. I like Peters suggestion of a ground bearing slab, with insulation under the concrete slab and blockwork on strip founds. As he says this avoids se costs which amount to half of the price of the insulated raft systems. The house will be 6.5m x 12.5m.
  23. I am on a really tight budget so I am looking to make savings where possible. I like insulated rafts but they are expensive. I have good ground and my se and bco say basic strip foundations are adequate. Im thinking that if I go with strip foundations and insulation under a suspended floor I will save ££££’s on SE fees alone. Am I missing something? Thanks
  24. I’m on a tight budget not by design but through current circumstances. Fixtures and fittings are easy to cost. Depending on taste the price will vary massively. From what you have listed all you will save is labour costs. Around £150 per person per day. Ive costed all the different build methods. Block is by far the cheapest in my area. ICF is a option if I do most of the work myself. The biggest variance in plots is the cost of services and foundations.
  25. Interesting thread. I thought oil boilers were expensive to run. I will definitely take a look.
