  1. Wow, and it's an air-to-air heat pump, if I'm reading this right. Obviously only good for a single room, but at £370 it's about the same price as those ridiculously expensive Dyson pedestal fans.
  2. Caution: EVs and hybrids never "fully" charge nor discharge their batteries. Back in the 1990s, Toyota discovered that if you restrict the SoC to a swing of about 40% to 60%, the battery essentially lasts for ever (for the life of the car, anyway). This is why you see MY2005 Prius taxis at 300,000+ miles. But that was NiMH chemistries. Lithium chemistries can stretch the point. For example, my Outlander PHEV uses around 25-95% SoC. I guess @JSHarris' plug-in Prius does a similar thing. And I guess his e-bike didn't ? This also means you need to be careful when thinking about the battery capacity: If you want it to last 10 years, the usable capacity will be significantly less than the rated capacity (depending on how the specs are written). To use my PHEV example again: Most of the spec sheets say it has a 12 kWh battery, which is true, but it only uses about 70% of that (roughly 8.5 kWh).
  3. Council officers, be they Planning, BC or Revenue, are generally not lawyers. I had a similar issue with Planning about what it meant to "start." It's probably best if you gently prompt them to consult with the council's legal team. Perhaps a simple letter to the officer along the lines of: Dear XXX, Thank you for your visit on Mary 14th, when we discussed the liability to Council Tax of our unfinished house. For the avoidance of doubt, our position is that the property is not yet a rateable hereditament, for the following reasons: a) b) c) We are confident that your legal department will be familiar with and will agree with this justification. However, if they have further questions, they are welcome to contact us. Yours sincerely, Joseph McClaine.
  4. Could I just say at this point how great it is to have @JSHarris back?
  5. Check out @JSHarris's experience hacking his ASHP to cool as well as heat.
  6. Marginally less likely ? Avoid old stock; plan to replace it every 3 years or so.
  7. At the risk of thread drift, YouTube is still supported, just not via the standalone app. You need the official Amazon Silk browser app, which comes complete with a YouTube shortcut (or just add youtube.com/tv). (You can also try other browsers, e.g., Firefox, but Silk works best for me: other ones seem to have weird video scaling issues.)
  8. I'm sorry if I'm teaching granny to suck eggs, but dogs don't sweat, so fans won't help much unless you keep his coat damp.
  9. Our fabricator used Smart Alitherm 300 frames. The 53mm-deep version is as minimal as you like.
  10. Yes, but more space has its uses...
  11. Earlier today, I happened to idly search for PV (and wind turbine) kits on Amazon. There are a bunch of interesting kits available, at a wide variety of prices. This in-roof kit looks interesting. It claims to be MCS-certified.
  12. Your experience seems typical. Which was why I bought one without. Pretty happy with my £370 Fridgemaster MS91518FFS from AO [as always, any piddling kickback goes to @Coopers' dog-rescue charity]
  13. I had to walk around with my neck at a weird angle, so that my eyes could see through the seemingly-tiny patch of lens that corrected for distance.
  14. Me too shudder. I sent them back to Glasses Direct and had then reglaze with conventional distance lenses
  15. Optician did a poor job, IMHO. The correct measurement might be in their records
  16. They should be included in the prescription. Mine says: near: add +2.00 in both eyes inter: add +1.25 in both eyes
  17. How does that sit with building regs AD minimum-height specs?
  18. Yeah, there's just something... odd about having the switches on the outside. And those screws really stand out now I'm used to seeing screwless plates every day.
  19. If you're going to have metal sockets, consider a type that has a grey plastic insert where the three pins go, as opposed to white or black. I chose Knightsbridge SS; I think BG also has something similar (but uglier, IMHO). Also consider a screwless, clip-on plate.

    Overheating

We didn't like the official Velux external blinds. In the end, we chose aftermarket blinds from The Roof Window Store (a Danish company, shipped from Hungary).
  21. Surely you meant "nazi's"?
  22. How about spanking anyone who begins their answer to a question with, "So..."?
  23. Yes, punctuation does differ across the pond, and most of my editorial clients are Over There, so those are usually the style guides I defer to. But I shan't be taking any lessons from Grammarly: https://techbeacon.com/grammarly-leaks-everything-youve-ever-typed-your-browser-everything
  24. Yes, some modern style guides permit ending a sentence with a "dangling" preposition
