Cross Laminated Timber and other Engineered Materials

Looks very good tbh. And I am VERY critical with most houses/designs. Would be interesting to see some more, in case you haven't posted already. Will dig through your posts now. ??

Cross Laminated Timber and other Engineered Materials
Patrick replied to puntloos's topic in Timber Frame
+1 on all that @MikeSharp01 said. In regards to the cinema room, apart from regular sound insualtion, just have a look at room in room system they use for Music studios, this works very well and should do the job in case your concerned a regular soundproofing in a timber frame won't be enough.?Edit:just seen that @ragg987 suggested the same thing, so +1 on that as well -
@puntloos When it comes to LVL and CLt and other forms of engineered timber, it is best to look abroad for examples. UK is not exactly a place for timber innovations nor are the professionals over here very knowledgable on average (I'm sure there are exceptions). Austria is a fabulous place for any engineered timber products. They building stadiums with it.

?OK, originally this was about TF pros and cons,

Back to topic : Tea needs to be made putting loose leaves in a metal tea leaf filter. Adding hot water and let it stand for 4minutes. Adding milk at the end, not before taking the leaves out. ?☝️?

Timber Walls connecting to top of Block&Beam Floor/screed

Timber Walls connecting to top of Block&Beam Floor/screed
Patrick replied to Patrick's topic in Foundations
You are the copy+paste instruction for lots of things on my frame. Thanks for that. Unfortunatley you have "conventional" Foundations so I cant copy that one. Do you know anyone (on here) that has done Block and beam foundation with an I-beam construction on top? (or Larsen Truss- would do as well for getting useable examples) -
Timber Walls connecting to top of Block&Beam Floor/screed
Patrick replied to Patrick's topic in Foundations
@Mr Punter Thats what I though. Keeps the question of how to do this . Preferably extend the screed to the outer shell Bricks than. -
You just had to add the "cola" bit , just in case some nutter on here was ready to throw his 5k supply of blow into the washing machine ???

Paid extra? I havent found any UK Larch anywhere near the price of siberian Larch? Would it be of lesser quality BUT much cheaper , I could understand this, but Siberian Larch is always cheaper (at least my experience). @colin7777 If you are painting anyways, go for cheap timber. The main reason people are fixated on Larch or Cedar is its durability when untreated(while still relatively cheap). Half of Sweden using (cheap) Spruce for cladding . As long as it s painted- fine .

I just have to add this ?

Maybe someone can help me understand this a bit better, as I haven t seen any drawings that make sense by manufacturers. Or maybe I am just too thick to understand. I am building Timber Frame(i-beams)_ with timber Cladding on top of a Insulated Block and Beam Floor. Most of the Block and Beam Insualtion Systems have manuals of how to lay them out. But they all just explain for timber frame with cavity and Brick Cladding/ Render to the outs ide. (See PIC 2) The entire setup is fairly similar with all the manufacturers , it is something like this: So If I want to put I-Beam Walls on top of this, should I put them over the cavity , a bit like this: Or could i not make the entire Foundation like a Platform with Screed going all the way to the outer skin of the wall in order to build from this platform (a bit more like you would do with a suspended timber floor) Hope this makes sense. But in PIC 3 is a short description of load bearing walls and my understanding is, that they have to sit on top of Bricks/Blocks not on top of EPS ? Not trying to overcomplicate, more than happy to go with what s easiest this time. If you could give me some sketches or drawings, even just quickly handscribbled, as I am stupid and understand pictures much better. And also YES-it really has to be suspended Block and Beam NO - I can not use different Foundation systems, Not Passive Raft, not suspended Timber Floor . Cheers ?

@Simplysimon seriously.unreal

+1 to this one. VERY MUCH a planning /land issue

Sounds exactly like me. I am considering the side costs and everything. That's why I am doing stuff myself. It's not always the best way(see tree adventure), but it's the only way if you have extremley limited funds. But I appreciated the tips, sometimes they get even through my thick skull.
-
Yes, I am having a go myself(once again), like with everything. I do disagree with most of you and think 400£ to measure some bits is not exactly value/money , but than again, I am poor , most people(on here) aren't ? . Should I become rich in the coming months, I will definetley change this post and go for all the external help I can possibly get. F... it , i'm just gonna let my architect build the whole goddamn thing. At the end, they are the professionals and should be trusted to do the best value/money plus quality, eh. *sarcasm off

??. Windows only. Hard to find Mac programmes that do it. QCad does it, but cant export files in the free version. Any other Cad Viewers for Mac(that are free) ?
-
Hijacking this topic rather than openig a new one: mentioned by @the_r_sole "setting out drawing with diagonal sizes written on it" Is there any way to obtain this from a DWG file or from Pdfs* -probably not so much from PDF ? Without having knowledge in Autocad or owning any Autocad version myself = seems difficult. Any work arounds ?

Agree, and what is there to say that the Pound won't go down to let s say 0.80€? I know the Pound historically was always strong, but who is to say if the exchange rate might not drop further? At least it would prop up exports. But the weak Pound already is a problem for importing.
-
Can I take your word for it. Would like to buy 15k worth of materials, but not sure wether to wait with exchanging as it might be getting even worse rate-wise. But I'm glad it "no doubt" will be going up after. Pm your details so you can lock this deal for me, please ?

And it will take longer to deliver if item is not stock (e.g. Windows)?

Land executive, keen to learn more about building
Patrick replied to derobe's topic in Introduce Yourself
Hi , welcome , this is a bit different than ususal . Lot s of information on here. Quite a critical view on the volume house builders by a lot of members(including me), but always happy to help, discuss and learn. Land acquisition surely is an interesting topic for a few members as this is what a lot of people are struggling with, and what consequently keeps the custom homes limited. -
Has anybody tried the QuickBase pile foundation system?
Patrick replied to howplum's topic in Foundations
@howplum spoke to all of them, as I need piles and have a very tricky plot. Result: All Screwpiles(including what you been looking at) are stupid expensive. Dont quite know why, but they just are. Thats the reason why they not used more often in the UK . I tend to think (from google research) that they are more often used in the US and Australia, but might be wrong. Here , if you Pile , it s driven Piles all day every day(meaning most widely used, accepted, insurable, mortgageable ...just easiest , others obviously might disagree) I mainly turned away from driven piles and anything involving Foundations WITHOUT concrete , for the durabitlity reason. There is not much long time testing going on with those. They SAY that they should be alright for 100 years ++ , and in theory they can be. But havent read much about old examples of houses that are build with Steel Piles. And since the costs are extreme, for any Piled solution , I would (and I am) go with the most rock solid option .
