  1. Feeling pretty pleased with myself as I have been dreading making this door. video-1558292016.mp4
  2. I was quoted by a glazing company in Aberdeen £8500 just for the supply and install of the glazing which I think is nuts. I had costed that I could DIY install all the glazing and balustrade channels required for the landing for around £2500 buying everything online. However the Oak treads alone will be around £2500 supplied and installed, so I am happy to pay a £1500 premium for one company to do all the work.
  3. i'll DM you as the guy has some health issues now. £4000 wouldn't be too bad if that was the stair complete. We will be another £6400 to have Oak treads and glass balustrades supplied and installed by one company. This includes 5 linear metres of glass balustrades for the landing. However £9-10k is still a lot less than if you went to one company and asked them to do all the work.
  4. I paid £4000 for the metal work for our cantilevered stair to be supplied and installed (this included the vertical column in the middle). This was the cheapest quote from a one man band, the other quotes were £5400 and nearly £8000!!! The metal worker said that the structural engineer had severely over specc'd the steel, which meant that it could have been £500 - £1000 cheaper is lighter steel was used. I also paid around £400 for the SE to design the stair. If I did it again I would speak to some metal workers first and try and see if they would design the stair (as they will use a SE that uses steel efficiently) A cantilevered stair is far more expensive compared to a steel stair that has a stringer on either side of the treads, such as this:
  5. I was thinking the same, that one block seams quite expensive (having done some basic research into ICF a few years ago)
  6. @JSHarris, @Bitpipe can you recommend a cutting attachment please as there are so many to chose from?
  7. We paid 17k for our timber frame to be erected to wind and watertight, that included installing 21 windows and doors, including 9 that are 3000 x 2400. The cost also included crane and telehandler hire. I think it was 40 hours labour for all the windows and doors, using a combination of manhandling the the windows or using a telehandler (with forks) The effort required will also depend on the manufacturer, I remember the joiner said Rational windows took a lot longer to fit compared to our Russell Timbertech windows, i suspect this is because our windows didn't come with any fancy gaskets etc.
  8. Thanks, multi tool does look like a better option is terms of getting a flush to the ceiling cut.
  9. Thanks, I was thinking it would make it a lot easier than a hand saw
  10. It's not cutting a hole, the 125mm hole has already been cut. It's trimming the end off the plenum (125mm diameter) flush with the ceiling so I can then attach the air valve
  11. I need to cut the plastic plenums that are fixed in position, can anyone reccomend the best way to do this? I was thinking of buying a cheap reciprocating saw like this one: https://www.diy.com/departments/performance-power-700w-220-240v-reciprocating-saw-prs700c/3663602796176_BQ.prd Or should i just use a fine toothed hand saw?
  12. DIY-Kitchens.com seam popular on here. I can't vouch for the quality yet as my one arrives tomorrow, however they are rated highly on Which.co.uk
  13. I don't have any facts as I haven't gone for wooden floors. However you may want to research engineered boards instead of solid oak etc as it should be more stable due to the heat from the UFH.
  14. To get good feedback on your plans it would be helpful to know: Room Dimensions, not just area Add in Windows + doors House Orientation ( where is N, E, S, W) Photos of the plot, including each orientation. Also if bedroom are to have fitted wardrobes, I would add them now as they can cause knock on effects if you add them later. Include all sink and toilet positions include all worktop positions in kitchen and utility In the bathrooms do you want toilet cisterns building into the wall, as again the bulkhead for this should be thought about now.
  15. I subscribe to Which for trustworthy reviews. Only issue with which is it seams to take a while to catch up with the "latest technology".When i was researching downdraft induction hobs last year they didn't have any reviews and I suspect even now they probably wont. having said that Which has helped us pick our fridge, freezer, dishwasher and washing machine.
  16. I can't find the manufacturers website when I type "Innocenti ART29141"into google - not a good sign. I was going to check out the hob technical drawings to see how much space it needs. In one of the photos of the link you provided it looks like the Innocenti would need more space than the Bora.
  17. 6 months pregnant..... when is your episode of grand designs being aired? ? What is the ceiling height, looks nice and high? Are you able to do a post about the house design, I would be interested to see it?
  18. Thanks I will give it a try.
  19. I am going to start making the door this weekend. For the structure I have 18mm x 40mm x 2400mm strips of birch ply. Can any one suggest the best way to fix the strips together to increase the vertical and horizontal strength. I can't decide if a T, I or 4 pieces would be best, in terms of strength, weight and actually assembling it. Also what is the best way to fix the strips together, glue with screws or use a framing nail gun or finishing nail gun. Also would I need to clamp the wood whilst the glue sets even if it's also screwed or nailed?
  20. I pointed it out to him when he complained initially, even although I didn't know the drumming was coming from his house. The son is playing them in the garage, which will be even more poorly insulated than the house as the garage door is non insulated.
  21. My Victor Meldrew was out questioning the ground workers on the first day that they started digging up the road to connect into the sewer. They had to close the road, however the street is a crescent so everyone can still get in and out of the street fine, just might take some people a whole 30-60 seconds longer. Also he lets his sound play the drums yesterday on a bank holiday, when I am assuming by his own rules everyone wants wants silence.
  22. Why wouldn't you use a softwood if you are going to be painting the wood? I would only use a hardwood if I was going to be varnishing it.

  24. As @Ferdinand mentioned we are going to have the cheap plastic chopping boards that come in different colours for different food, main reason is that they easily fit into the dishwasher.
