Yes an absolute must As already the hot weather and rural location made me take my eye off the ball I’ve hardly any room in my van for my day job It will make life easier
-
We started our first build in November so made building the two garages for storage was a priority Starting in dry weather this time has made this less of a priority But really should have been done first But great to get the garage workshop covered in Myself and my wife started at 6am yesterday with storms forecast later that day Luckily they failed to materialize Which allowed us to get it watertight

First of all Howdens first price is NEVER there best price They always call later with a chunk off Usually after you have ordered elsewhere

No BC won’t be interested in what is on your drawings Just that everything meets building requirements Our drawings correctly show Attic trusses on our garage workshop But incorrectly show a steel ridge beam The back of the house show cranked steels Again wrong BC didn’t care that we have used double steels Only that they are seated on the correct pad stone and bolted correctly

If you are able To run a fan to keep the air circulating That will help Very few issues with modern plasters now
-
We work everyday As long as the inside temperature doesn’t drop below +2 Even exterior render we work down to + 2 and cover for heavy frost Recently we were wet plastering in 32c Add plenty of Crème of tar tar
-
We had a similar request They have now agreed to 4 bay boxes on the back of the garage

You can do without or purchase a professional certificate at half the price Or purchase one retrospective should you decide to sell As I’ve said on numerous occasions No such thing as a forever home

Roof truss install - what would you do?
nod replied to BadgerBadger's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
I hired a small crane for our workshop As the Attic trusses where 120kg and almost 4000 tall making them top heavy But on the main house I won’t hire a crane as the max weight is a bit less So we will pull them up the side of the Scaffolding by hand Like I did on our previous build 12 meter trusses When I first started in the build trade There where no tele handlers and you hardly ever saw a crane on site The you have should be manageable between three -
Get them back

New build design & cost estimation opinions

Regardless of design If BC comes along and says Let’s have it another 500 It’s going to cost If you use the wrong size bucket You probably shouldn’t be in the digger in the first place We sat our treatment plant in 1 cube of concrete on our first build and 6 cube on our second 500 quid extra You can possibly account for this -

The G F area was 150m2 Nice flat site But trees five years ago Prices have more than doubled since then Our current build No trees Boulder clay hardly any top soil Shallow foundations Should save a few quid this time Wrong as soon as I started digging I hit pockets of sand Muck away would have been horrendous Luckily we own the two Acre field behind I chose to strip back the top soil on half the field and bury the 1000 tones plus of muck After a day of getting nowhere with my borrowed 8 tone digger I hired a bulldozer £500 per day and £300 per day fuel It’s the only part of the build that is impossible to predict I dug twelve test holes prior to full planning which the SE based his foundation design on and all seamed well Hopefully you are lucky with ground conditions But allow a contingency Just in case -

It looks to low Site clearance and foundations are hard to predict Muck away can soon rack up As can stone in We spent over 10 k on muck away on our previous build 5 years ago -
I use Styropz for vertically every job Good price good to use Or aqua cement board LW1 for the EWI seems quite pricey But you don’t need a base coat 5 mil coat then fibre mesh Two hours later a second coat of LW1 (10 mil) Ive applied many thousands of m2s and never had an issue Bombproof Drop me a message if you need any other help or advise

Last time we used Wickes I think they where similar to the builders merchants But where doing buy two get the third free
-
I would use a trench block underground Probably work out quicker and cheaper

Something we are often asked on here Myself and my wife have been getting the roof ready on her workshop All the facias on yesterday except the front pike Hoping for brickie to come and finish the last 550 bricks today Cancelled last night So we where there and mixed up by 730 am this morning Answer to the above We got them laid and four lengths of Facia on by 5pm today No chariot for raking out so my wife made do with a piece of timber with a nail knocked through

Solar power payback takes much longer than you think

My mother in-law got a permit to allow me to clear her garden and take the old summer house to the tip The guy said the permit applicant should accompany the permit Lots of jobs worth at these tips -

We’ve a quarry across from us that also has a recycling mixed waste About 120 for a full trailer If you look on FB I can get the same waste collected for £70 There lies the problem -
Plus 1 with the air to air I also liked the bit about his computer being on till midnight ISH 😁

Very difficult No vans no trailers Even attached a car 5 bags of rubble per year The here to help guys search for anything that isn’t household and don’t help Covid Obviously When my brother in-law died We cleared his garage They wouldn’t let us tip a 5 kg bag of dried up artex Classed as building waste It’s not surprising there’s so much fly tipping
