  1. onoff am I looking at 50mm screws for my (30mm) ins PB > reveal edge battens, or longer? and wasn't it 32mm for the 12.5mm PB > battens?
  2. Omg so much more things to get/ consider. Ok thanks for links. I'm just going to get the screws/ the PB job done before I can think of all these extras. One Q, is re these tapered edges: on all 4 edges? I was thinking of putting them in [] this config.. the walls either side of the window are ideal. Is that correct thinking, or have I messed that up-?
  3. Good points newhome. I'm sort of used to filling/ sanding albeit on the woodwork front.. so I've some knowledge about how 'perfect' a finish is likely needed prior to painting. Saves £alot & prob not a major headache. Good practice too for the upstairs BIG job I'll have to tackle after the winter. Its all about doing w'out pro's so far.. so ideal if I can do all the job.
  4. Ok good got the tapered edge PB coming thurs, instead of the std PB. Cheaper at Jewsons in fact/ stocked. Easier than I thought that! Cheers zoot
  5. Understood.. but isn't it a very skilled job, ie only real avenue is getting a pro in to do this? In which case A) likely nigh on impossible for 6 months I'd bet around here, only a few around & B] just for such a small job I'd prob be last on their list 'todo'/ or refuse job maybe. Ok will try the other 2 places. I have a trade account with TP you see which £really helps.
  6. Hi onoff- just spoke to TP - they said they don't stock tapered edge/ need to get in/ 2 weeks min.. so what do you recommend: stay with order as is, or wait on these? it is possible to fill & sand the joins of square-edge enough for the finish to be acceptable? I am covering most of the PB's by: units/ tops, tiles above/ up to a corner cupboard (above 'L' worktop join corner). Could I fill > sand > paper over square edged joins at all? Where the wall is most/ ceiling to floor only in one spot albeit next to door, this will be ~somewhat covered too by a couple of shelves (higher) & bins (lower).
  7. [amitryptiline + codeine? I'd be arrested- I'm still in pain/ generally feeling rotten which doesn't help me, as I mentioned]. Yes you did, & I looked at this a few times onoff.. although I saw the taper I still couldn't make total clarity of it, because simply I'm not used to it. Its a totally new material Ive never seen before. Tbh I thought the taper was something I added with a 'taper file' (that perhaps I'd bought/ the yellow thing) ie it was fashioned rather than bought-as. To you who know & use it, the difference pings out as perfectly clear. To a novice, the difference isn't (until that is the time at which I'm actually ready to order it.. even then, its still not clear enough for me not to order std PB). I could run you through wiring an amplifier, but I'd make room for you to make mistakes being a novice even after explaining xy or z once or twice. Its just being new to all this that's all, its certainly -not- that I'm not reading your great info. I will just try & redo the order.. they'd likely not have loaded the wagon up yet if delivery thurs PM.
  8. That's a plan Peter.. tho Ive done that stuff before & recall hating the job. Wallpaper paste iirc? Maybe I can get away with using it on just the 1/4 whole area I need. Prefer not to have to tho. alot. over & out/ till tmrw. Many thanks chaps. Have faith.. & you'll (I hope) be pleased with results once all's done- Ive got alot to live up to after so much input from y'all.. I'll endeavor to live up to it with a good job, well done (well done in my world that is/ hopefully in yours too!).
  9. I only just saw what actually you meant by tapered edge boards today.. its so subtle as to any difference (for the uninitiated) to have been missed by me twice Ive read that post. Bugger. I ordered/ bought std 12.5mm ones today, but being delivered thurs (TP) so maybe I should try & redo?? Do all std PB's need full-skimming? that's a pro job I hadn't bargained for at all.
  10. good one onoff- I think I get the idea(..)/ recall Peter I think said somthing similar, morelike your block/ pencil idea. I like your diagrams! I may be tempting fate by asking so soon.. but can I get away with -not- plaster/ skimming these PB's? I will be tiling + units hiding 3/4 of the PB area.. but still leaves some mostly near door/ immediately noticeable. (Is that basically the principle of these 2 fillers you link to-?)
  11. Gotcha onoff- on board with that info cheers. As the window's all of 90cm away from the LH wall edge (luckily 110cm from RHS wall edge).. I may be able to squeeze behind, in reveal area, to mark the "C" cutout myself instead of small person, if I can rope n'bor to hold PB in place (I bet not as simple as tho). Its the slight-curved edge profile to cut beforehand I'm not looking fwd to, or hauling these sods into house when it may be raining. C'tex & PB delivery thurs.. so can only crack on then. In meantime I'm researching the plumb faff to unhook my sink > put 2 stopper valves on > redo water supply so I'll only have the sink out of action (for min time poss- not so short in my case alas as all wall work, plus unit work [inc sink cutout/ seating] to do on this side before new sink can be connected back up). I did compression joints before successfully to hook my shower up.. so can do again. Just gotta remind myself how I did them!
  12. Hi chaps- yes I'll be using insulated pB for just the reveal. I'm going over onoffs notes on how its done now. Can't at the mo establish whether the sides go ontop of the sill piece, or down beside it (I mean where the two meet).. & why I'd need a small person to mark xyz. I'll go back over the pics of your reveal job today onoff, which should answer these Q's. Gotta wait on both the box extensions (midweek) & the gun via post now.. so a while before the reveal done > then C'tex > then main PB job, so I really appreciate your keeping tabs on progress! trying to think what else I can do in meantime.. but nothing afaict: in order to attack the other wall with battens I have to remove sink/ then a fair while whilst its out to new one in, which needs careful planning to keep this time at minimum poss. Can you remind me if the C'tex is attached on the wall in between the battens with anything? I guess it just needs 'help' to not fall out befpre the PB pushes it in place, rather than firm sure fixing? what if so.. then maybe I can crack on with this job.
  13. Hi onoff- no just looks like it/ photo prob. The window's a fraction on thecock but good enough for me. the sill's ~nr as dammit level. Just bought your ^ gun. Is the cleaner stuff is specifically for the gun.. rather than 'foam cleaner' off stuff you've applied it to-? I'm using this soudal stuff to fix the ins PB onto the mortar, & plaster sides/ top of sill-reveal area.. is that right can you remind me? If I can manoeuvre the PB big board into place in 'upright position', on the LH side of the wall/ starting from here, then I'm only ~4" off the full H of the room. So, hopefully if I can just prop it up onto s'thing handy, then get it/ pin it on flush with the ceiling. Ive never handled these PB tho (esp cutting the slight curve to the edge 1st > then propping up into position > then s'how marking the window bit to cut it into a "C shape" > then prop up/ pin on) so I'm a bit concerned even still.
  14. Good idea on that gun.. I think I'll get one of those, & the low expansion soudal foam @ screwfix.. good info! Right done the sill ~ fairly flat/ it'll do.
  15. The soudal low expansion foam is only available in the gun-can. A bit much for me to go gun+ this £9 can + gun cleaner = approx £40. Is there any low expansions you know of in a one-time can? or, can std high expansions be used in small ammounts to fix the C'tex to the walls, & fill small gap between them & battens? The can I got today expands to 60x can (the shelf "Thing" was born via a 30x can!). If I take a whack of codeine + amitryptyiline again, & this 60x can.. it might all go flippin nuts.
  16. I did read it indeed! thought it was great idea/ & mental noted.. but it'd taken me 1/2 hr to find which bloomin post you see.. I was in a rush for a dental appt, so cheekily I admit asked if you could just recall the item for me onoff. I'll jot down ideas as I go now/ understood. Ok got them, rasp whatsit, mortar, PB hod whatnot.. no extention boxes tho (none on ebay too) in next week ~maybe. So I'll crack on with sill mortar > insulated (30mm only have in) PB window job > then can prob C'tex around sockets/ add these last? I saw 12.5 Gyproc's in Jewsons.. crikey they're gonna be damn tricky manouevering those 2400 x 1200 alone let alone hauling into place/ fixing. I had my eye on the easier 1800 x 900's tbh.. but haven't I battened only for the bigger ones?
  17. Cheers onoff- just in time I'm out the door..
  18. Nice one- I'll get one of these in town too. Onoff can you recall the PB bit you linked to again? it'll take me an age to find it.. maybe screwfix have one too.
  19. Ok I'll make a decision on this PB later.. once the prep & C'tex done. Maybe I can only physically handle 9mm to do the job alone. I was thinking of a prop/ support of some type I could haul the board up onto.. but can't figure out a good design. Once I get this job done, & done well, I'm hoping it will be a 'tester'.. I've got even more pressing areas in the house/ much larger to consider a same insulating > batten work on: a large'ish porch 'room' of a single brick course only (with 2x glazed windows).. & the big job (which is making my 2 upstairs room incredibly/ unbearably cold) taking out the 12mm PB all around the 3 walls in each upstairs room > redoing the battens (or if Im lucky keeping as is, or, only replacing those at the chimney end which are alarmingly ~1ft away from the inner wall) > filling with BIG thick C'tex > reboarding > etc.
  20. so 32mm screws for 12.5mm PB? What about the inner window/ reveal areas (which Ive asked 2 builders' merchants who only have 30mm ins PB: 2nd place has only polystyrene-backed PB).
  21. I don't have any damp thankfully in the kitchen.. thinking 9mm just as Im chipping into the room by a good 1-1/4" so wanted as small as poss on battens. But, maybe a few mm's won't make much difference, & if the overall job's made easier, & a better finish with 12.5mm- then I'll go with that. Reckon the PB is possible to put up with one person alone?
  22. No no I'm kidding.. angle grinders the last thing i should be handling at the mo! Ok Im all set the get the sockets extensions, & the mortar on PM. Then getting ins PB tmrw- & screws.. can you remind me of what length (for 9mm PB)/ & approx no. I might be looking at? Do I need any particular cutting xyz for the PB's? & will 9mm be ok in a damp west wales area.. anything to worry about on this front?
  23. wow Im whacked out today- all a buzzy haze tbh. ok got the angle grinder out. that cuts metal, right-?
  24. Appreciate the info onoff/ chaps.. in a world of pain now so back on board tmrw i hope. very grateful indeed. (just saw desig survivor trailer.. ooh looks fun! president in a hoodie hehe whatever next. breaking bad for me.. Im sure u seen/ but if not drop all & start it pronto you'll be hooked in 5min!). thx zoot
