Help with kitchen renovation/ 1st house.
zoothorn replied to zoothorn's topic in Bathrooms, Ensuites & Wetrooms
Great help onoff (& Peter esp with that pic- v.useful too).. I'm back on board with your info, near all: a "tapered edge" is what tho.. a me-cut edge sanded/ de-burred to neaten up the rough edge?? (or do you buy/ ask for 'tapered edge PB'). The worktop will actually meet the sill (bar 1/4" gap, as its 27mm acacia not 44mm top like old one).. so its just the wall above window to smooth out a tapered-square edge joint, at this PB meeting point. So ok I go from RH wall 'back' then? I'll try get the sill out then. Now, I notice the general way to PB the reveal is -not- including C'tex. Is that right, or, should I consider C'tex on reveals too? I'm thinking the cold will spew out around these 'weak' areas. Or is it just 'too big faff/ don't bother just PB is normal way here'. Thanks, zoot -

Hi onoff- So by full board-full board you mean continue L to R, as I'm doing.. rather than starting on the RH cnr back with an odd shaped PB bit in middle? so.. thereby meaning the only cut edge is in the RH corner (is that what you mean by "abbuting"? or can you explain what this word means- thx) -

Ok thanks Peter.. I'm trying to figure out which is most economical re. PB taking into account the other wall to do you see. Without experience I'm bound to make a cockup on this or some other pg1 thing. And what would you do with my black pine window sill too? it won't quite reach out to the PB with an annoying gap of 1/2".. plus another annoying 1" gap below it (to the horizontal batten the units will fix to- guess I can fill this with a sliver of C'tex or is that too fiddly/ stupid?). -

(not according to onoff's diagram below the kids bedroom diagram a few posts back newhome.. from midpoint of 1st batten to midpoint of 4th). I don't know how to proceed as I have more than 1200 each side. Assuming I have to put a vertical batten on RHS edge of window, as in my pic below, to facilitate the window reveal boarding.. & start the battens from the RH wall corner "back" twds the window @ 400.. do I cut it at this window batten midpoint (~1100), or add another one bang next to it to get me to 1200? Then fill the middle vacant area above & below the window with 1 more short batten/ cut a small bit of PB to fit?? -

I hope its as per the "1200" diagram below the 'kids bedroom pic' in the post above this ^.. cos that's the way Ive done it.. ie, centre of batten to centre of batten. Can someone say if having got to the window.. I should be doing the same working back from the other corner of the wall, twds the window? -

Hi onoff.. yup been looking back over your useful pics. Done no3 @ 46cm, & no4 @ 120cm from no1. I had thought to line the window reveal with PB onto inside & batten edge.. as I can't see how the PIR would fix the the inside back of the reveal side.. its too complicated to explain where I mean let alone do it! So having done as below, is the idea now to go from the other side (far RHS of wall) 'backwards' to the RHS of the window?? then fill the middle small uprights above & below? Im away all day but continuing 5PM & over w'end. [The "////" batten is just resting ie to show what I plan to do here (horizontal midpoint is the UNITS' fixing height you see)]. Much appreciated.. I'm slowly getting there, maybe? -

Onoff I'm not understanding anything now. I dont know what a CAD is. I need sleep. Was this diagram the one you did before, for your kids b'room.. or did you sketch this up of the plan of my room? I'm trying to look for your kids b'room.. but I can't find anything/ a link?? Im so confused. -

Onoff.. I dont know what pir is, insulation stuff/ C'tex? But my area of wall, to the left of the window, is 90cm wide. So am I not going to cut it at 90cm at the edge of the vertical window line then?? Im not understanding when you say I need it to go full 120cm.. as it'll cover the window as it were. I can't cut PB in a L shape surely.. I'm not on board quite yet, my apologies. I need sleep before I continue/ no3 batten is really doing my noggin in. -

So do I put my next batten at 46cm?? this side of the window is 90cm wide, so effectively can be spanned by only 3 battens. You see I'm still not sure why the figure 40cm (apart from it being 120cm divided by 3). Is it for 'structural rigidity' of the PB attatchment & -has- to be therefore 40cm?? or can it be 46cm with no ill effects. Therefore, I'm not sure where to put this 3rd vertical batten. which you can see is only resting at 'noprmal' 40cm mark. If I put it here, then the next one is almost bang next to it with only a 1/4" gap between the two. Surely impossible to fill.. or is this the right way to go? (& fill with a sliver of C'tex.. or even foam?? seems a silly gap). Are you understanding what I'm saying I wonder? -

no3 vertical is resting: as you can see it'll be only 1/4" away from no4 though, if this goes flush with sill edge.. -

Ok that's what I've done for verticals/ 1st I put a horizonatal rail along btm... I thought of mice?! then 2 vertical battens on so far: all fixed at 4 points (2.4m H battens): ie they in midd area bow/ follow the contour of the (concave) walls by 1.5cm at mid area. I just couldn't face 'straightening up' the battens relative to the wall packed out with xyz.. Id have been on them for a week. They look ok. There's a gap between btm LHS of no.1 to the wall of ~2cm tho. is this ok? I'm stuck at batten no.3 due to the window approaching.. if I put no3 at 40cm, then no4 will only be 1/4" apart from it as this will be edge of the window sill side edge. Can you remind me why 40cm? tried to find but couldn't in replies.. & should I miss out one as it were & go 46cm?? -

Ok thats good- I'm sure I can do or get s'one to do the socket boxes rejig ok. I'm really most worried about the battens.. if I press this one in the middle, in against the wall, its quite a bow & pressure on any middle screw- but if I were to leave & pack it out I'd be losing another 1/4-1/2" of space into the room. godammit. can BP 'bend' a bit to accomodate such a bow? the edge not being straight is going to cause headaches cutting it to follow the 'bow' on the side too. jeepers this is scary. -

Yes this is the best side.. but Tbh none of the battens are proper straight.. Id have been there all day choosing to get all six 4ft8'' straight. Its outdoor/ treated stuff.. is that right? I asked for roof battens & this is what TP showed me, stored outside. -

Well the extension which is bathroom/ kitchen, UT room is 1975-85 (main shell of the house is 1830, a top floor 75-85 of 2 beds above). But this extension is terribly badly built, as is the top floor. If I put batten up at the junction of the "L" level (sensible to start here-?) I have a 1cm gap behind to its wall in the middle (pic 1/ so the wall bows in).. & a 1.5cm gap, at middle, to adjacent wall (pic 2/ so that bows in too). -

Onoff.. I just offered the 1st batten up to see- & the walls are not exactly vertical: meaning, if I start at either end with an upright batten touching the side wall @ top, there's a big gap at btm if I set it to level. What do I do here/ how do I start? Ive bitten off way more than I can chew with this job I know it goddamit.. its going to take me a week to put the battens up as the walls go in & out/ really badly all way along. desperately need help chaps! -

Ok just seen last 4 replies before ^ this one of mine/ thanks alot for those esp the diagram onoff. So no top horizontal batten rail needed- good one less job. Right then, plan is units out- & Ive taken the plunge & got one side out (laptop area/ easier side of the 2 L-shaped joined together). I plan to do this wall 1st, leave sink unit in place until I've some practise & more confident to do this tricky 2nd side. What I'm left with to cause trouble on this bare wall.. is a window sill, a power point, & a single on-off-w'light switch socket above it. What to do with these? -

Can someone tell me how to remove the 'skirting' section of the units, under the doors? they have no obvious outside screws showing. I'm attempting to deconstruct the units to pull them out/ to do the insulation job- with them in situ job isn't possible. I'm wondering if this is all to much tbh! I'm panicking a bit. Tops effectively off, drawers & doors removed,. Ok the units seem to be in sections of 2-doors-wide. Ive separated the 1st (under the laptop area in pics).. but its still attatched via the skirting bit. -

Thanks chaps (still can't get notifications of replies, hence the delay in my posts..) So do I need the horizontal battens, sorry I'm not quite following the plan with these right now enough to start. I'm going to have a look see if I can shift the units out/ away to do the C'tex job.. then put back onto the PB. Quite a tricky job afaict, so not sure which way to go: ;leave in or shift out/ away. Can you remind me why 'string' is used/ where? Appreciated. zoot -

Onoff- do you have a batten rail across the top of the vertical battens? I can't see as your blue dpc thing is over the top.. I guess if so its easier to put a batten across, above the tops of the verticals, rather than a series of noggins-?
