  1. spot on @JSHarris Im going to keep this advice for a crib sheet for whichever poor unfortunate I find to come and do the job under my eagle eye?Any volunteers?
  2. The stick up paper blinds are very effective as temp solution and very cheap. I had mine up for 8 months!
  3. Mmmm thought as much. Might try a local company had not thought of that - I only want one of those no gubbins on the outside wall ones I don't want a big unit outside so a simple install I would have thought. 1 man core drill....am I being silly!
  4. Thank you...in main 'hot' area I am looking at a space of circa 56sqm so not small. Room is approx 7m x 8m and 2.5m high so I am getting that to 87.5 cubic meters....I am totally thick with this sort of stuff.
  5. I am liking the tower one it would fit very neatly in a corner of my room but I cannot find either a price or a spec that says how many sqm room size it suitable for....do you find that info somewhere?
  6. I can see appliances direct offer an installation service for air con units.......do you think I would be 'safe' using one of these installers in my MBC TF house? They are offering at 5% VAT too instead of 20% https://www.appliancesdirect.co.uk/content/air-conditioner-installation
  7. If its not too big a span you could use the self supporting ones save making holes in anything...or use the one with the stick on fixings
  8. perfect! Just need to find me a ‘man what does’ and get them in! Thank you.
  9. Mine is render/clad but not cuboid. Planning here would only allow for a very modern style in the context of the old house of special historic interest part of garden we bought as our plot. They def did not want a ‘traditional’ style, it had to be different. We also had at planners insistence to drop the house down a few metres from ground level so it didnt stick up on the horizon and impact on the view for those behind us. Some challenges as I did not want anything subterranean or banked into the earth. I wanted a stylish modern bungalow that I could walk right around outside...detached and stand alone. We ended up digging out a platform a few metres down hence why I have a 3m high retaining wall around two sides of the plot. We got there, with house design eventually and I think ours works, I didn't want a white box and stone/slate would not have worked here so I compromised on render on the walls that get the most of the fierce weather and larch cladding on the rest plus lots of glass. My house footprint has lots of ins and outs its not square...I know more expensive to build but to me a more interesting building for having that detail. Initially they insisted on a green roof but we went back afterwards and amended to single ply membrane as I didn't want a living roof. We had to reduce some of the upward curving angles on the roof as it became technically quite challenging as to how to keep it fixed down in the huge winds we get and I have two roofs on my house one warm part of tf and with another one sitting on top which is the angled part and is a cold roof.......All great fun, what I have ended up with is a lot more me than architect initial ideas ...we managed to get there together in the end. Try and look are your surroundings and see how your house will sit, it may become apparent that a white cube would be perfect for your location on the other hand a zinc roof barn style may present itself as the ideal option. Find your style and design your house with conviction not from the architect catalogue of modern houses then tell planners why it will be perfect.
  10. I am keen to explore getting one or more of these units installed.....living area and bedroom. At the mo I am running 3 dyson air coolers which are helpful in making things bearable but just really give a cocoon of personal cooling not whole room. How does aircon fit with mvhr running at the same time.....does it cause balance problems do you know? How are you treating your mvhr with your new aircon in action.
  11. I once had a corrugated metal roof that might be considered. a design feature now.......single storey, pitched roof, no internal ceilings we just looked at underside of metal roof ......edgy design not, actually just no materials available to put in ceilings......hot as hades and loud as a battlefield in rains. Was in Africa of course.
  12. Really like the look of these....challenge will be in finding suitable person to fit one given I struggle to find handyman for even most basic of jobs. Not just me my friends in this area have the same problem. We live in a black hole for ‘men what do’. I guess finding studs as @JSHarris kindly explains is one aspect, if I go out the rendered side (which would be best) then there are battens and render boards too. I’m sure its doable for right person. Were I doing a build again I would not go for MVHR I would look at the systems that combine cool/heat/vent like the Unico small vent system I have just been browsing. Their UK agents are only about 15 miles from me too......wish I had known then what I know now etc
  13. Jumping in here. Thanks @JSHarris they look brilliant. I guess it just needs care where to drill through so you dont hit the timber frame?
  14. No swamp cooler nasty things breed bugs. Have a look at the dyson range of air coolers, pricey and not as good as proper aircon but I have one and it makes the bedroom usable for me, no venting its just a portable unit.
  15. Ive had a portable in the past. Ideal for a single room and can be moved about. About the size of an under counter fridge and on wheels. Mine had a large flexible hose that vented via a window. It had a sort of slim slot end that fitted into the open window space and then gap packed with foam or something....airtighness not relevant there is no need to be precious about fitting it, its temporary and portable. TBh I never bothered to pack the gap it worked well enough without probably just used a bit more power. Mine was condensing so no issues with emptying water tanks. I am thinking of getting a new one just for occasional use ..at the mo I am running my dysons in the bedroom and tv snug as too hot in there.....large living area was 29 degrees at 10pm last night, way too hot even with benefit of film on windows so we are not using that area at mo.
  16. I went for a mains gas boiler (Vaillant) in preference to an ASP as I had heard of lots of issues with ASP (now commonly installed by builders to bump up their ratings). Figured if all the fancy technology failed we could always bung a few rads in ?
  17. I dont have any gutters on this house but I have used hedgehogs in my (2) downpipes to soundproof them, It sounded like bongos with large metal downpipes and huge volume of water coming off roof at speed. Very effective they are now silent. I have some hedgehog left over, not sure how many metres but if a large amount not needed and its enough you would be welcome to it. Just cluttering up my garage.
  18. did ecology give you a list of panel solicitors?
  19. 2k.....what were you asking them to do?
  20. Actually they had boots too....just not my size?
  21. i have heatmiser......some of my stat lights come on randomly too, some never. come on. Tried all sorts now given up. Be interested to see if you solve it. There is a dedicated heatmiser user group forum but sorry cant find the link.
  22. I had hedgehogs in gutters at previous house. They work well
  23. Got myself a new handbag today....look out lads I’m building myself a toolkit? They also had some very nice looking brushed steel single spout kitchen mixer taps with pull out spray nozzle also 29.99...I was tempted!
  24. I have a rescue cocker spaniel who screams his head off at anyone coming near the place......the bark is definitely worse than the bite as when confronted he just rolls over for a tummy tickle?
