Recommendations for a Bug Zapper
lizzie replied to Ferdinand's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Got the tennis racket one too...great stress reliever. Have some solar ones that fix on windows with a suction pad. The sun charges the things and at night it has the blue light on, it zaps the bugs. I didnt think they were working but when I took them down to clean windows they had a surprising amount of dead bodies inside. They are better for smaller flies though. We get some really big horrid things as have a livery next to us and they come over. I have found good old fashioned sticky fly papers the business for these. Best for me are window stickers 4 for £5.99 from Lakeland. They last 3 months if they dont get filled up first. Look like a yellow sunflower sticker on the window but up in the corner not too intrusive. If I had to have just one of them I would go for the sticky paper it's by far the best. -
@ryder72 Of course I didnt buy them all but I did try quite a few before making my decision. I think my opinion on the product is as valid as yours we start from a different place, you from reports and stats and me from testing and use and we each have formed our own opinion. But every time Bora is mentioned on here you do it down. You are always saying there is better for the money etc. Its a marketing hype etc You always plug the ones you like which is understandable. Given everyone knows you have a kitchen business and you sell some high end hobs I wanted to give a more balanced view on the Bora from personal use. I am not criticising the brands you promote just giving a view of what I think of Bora in use and how I found it compared to others I tested. Ref your favoured brands personally I did not like the Gutmann in use one iota. I have not seen the Novy you refer too as probably not out when I was looking but I specifically did not want something that comes up whether it be out of hob itself or out of worktop so would not have considered it. I wanted sleek minimal and good to look at with quiet operation and a decent level of extraction and a good controllable flexible cooking area. I found all that in the Bora product...style as much as substance informed my choice.....and I stress my choice, I don't expect my choice to be everyone's choice. Best in class buying from test results and salesman opinions has more than once ended me up with something I hated in use. I now prefer to make my decision from testing a product not what a comparison report says. I am sure you do offer your customers a good service, that comes across. I think we need to leave i there now.

Example foundation and slab detailing for timber frame
lizzie replied to Ben100's topic in Foundations
When you say first floor level is that what I think of as ground floor? Why can’t you just lower the ground all around rather than a having some below ground and digging a trench. We lowered our ground so nothing below ground level but we still have a french drain and trench all around. -
pressed button too soon see edited above crossed with this reply. Have no wish to be difficult you are giving your opinion on stats results etc I am giving my view from physical trials and use and what I liked best to use not based on what the reports said. One of the worst vacuum cleaners I ever owned I bought based on independent reports.

That is what the first kitchen ppl said to me about my choices ........another kitchen supplier I talked to (not the one I used in the end) was so impressed by Bora from looking at it for me they became authorised stockists. I didnt choose on statistics and reports I chose from trying the products. I think its individual it suited me so I bought it not what first kitchen co tried to steer me into.

I agree I have a Bora, I had demos of several before deciding on a Bora. I dont know why, @ryder72 has never been keen on Bora. Early on I looked at one local kitchen showroom (because a friend worked in admin there) and had some designs done, they couldn't get to grips with the look I wanted, they also only recommended products they sold, tried to push me into brands I didnt want. They may have been good brands but they were not what I had decided on after doing my own research. They didnt like it and were grudging about trying to source my wish list appliances. The company I used in the end were brilliant, he was a Bora showroom so sorted that but because he was not an agent for the ovens I wanted he said he couldn't get good discounts so if I could get them cheaper on the internet go ahead and they would fit them. Such a great company to deal with one if the best on my whole build. btw have been using my Bora for over a year and I love it.

Thanks Craig its a lift and slide door handle on inside only. Locksmith took cylinder out I didnt get a picture of it. Can have a try at getting it out again myself if its not going to mean I mess up door and then cant lock at all...... a bit scary that! Is it straightforward to get in and out? I didnt watch locksmith do it.

Spot on @JSHarris I have just found a photo of the wall I want to use and exactly as yours I have a smaller gap at one end. This stud thing may defeat me because I have only one wall the aircon unit could go on and three weeks ago I had all my floating cupboards fitted on that wall...I have a nice symmetrical gap either end of the cupboards and walls and the gap between corner of wall and socket is about 90, that is my aircon gap hence looking at slim tower.....what chance of studs fitting perfectly the template for the vent holes -(( If the vent holes could be vertical not horizontal that would solve it but looking at the units they dont go that way. Not giving up quite yet will download the template and find the studs and see how it works...... UPDATE...after earlier request via the web site they enrolled me in to get access to the technical docs......and it will work the vent holes are vertical one on top of the other so plenty of room between the stud. Result! Now to find me a man who can install it! Good rates of cash pay if anyone wants to volunteer to do it!

I have a lock on one of my sliders that has never worked properly since the day it was installed. Because of all the issues with the sliders it got overlooked in trying to solve the major problems. Finally got round to trying to sort it today. My local locksmiths came to fit my safe and look at the lock. They say the cylinder is done for and needs a replacement, this means my slider only 'locks' on the handle not fully locked with key. Of course it's a warranty issue and locksmiths suggested I go back to Internorm but I have no dealer relationship since all the problems so will have to go to HO and thats not quick or ideal. I asked locksmiths if they would just fit me a new one and I will pay. All good except we are having a bit of trouble tracking down the right one....they may find it eventually but in order to save time asking here. Has anyone else sourced one?

Vat claim
lizzie replied to nod's topic in Self Build VAT, Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), S106 & Tax
Must be an area variation. No one bothered us at all during the build....we told them we had moved in (after sign off) and it took a few months before they even replied and then another few months for valuation office to assess it. They said I could pay an amount every month on account pending the valuation office assessment or just wait until assessment was done and pay the whole bill then. Bill started from date we told them we had moved in but it was nearly a year before we got the bill. -
Well done both of you. Looks great.

yes floor standing unit ....but I was referring to stud finder detection through extra thick/tough plasterboard not the usual thin stuff. stud detection needed for vent holes in walls.
-
Thanks all I will still need to think about the ‘other side’ where my render is on carrier boards which are on battens.......ideally I need to go through the wall missing the studs and the render board battens. What are the chances of that happening!

From my photo memories, taken at 6.15pm on 26 July 2018. Going forward and with climate change I really think cooling/aircon should be something that gets as much consideration in the build as keeping warm. If I ever (bring on the white coats) do another I will have whole house aircon as well as mvhr etc.

Earth bonding Copper incoming mains with all plastic internal plumbing
lizzie replied to Jody's topic in General Plumbing
After seeing this topic I checked mine. No earth bonding under stainless steel kitchen or utility room sinks but I do have a big earth bond cable on the incoming main and gas pipe in the plant room. They are metal pipes. My water that runs around the house is all plastic with copper at the last part where it joins into taps etc. Building inspector passed it all so I am presuming it is ok............. -
I want to establish that the positions I have in mind for the aircon units will be ok so before buying (and searching for the elusive man what does to fit them) so I need to find my studs. I have utubed a stud finder vid so know how they work. Advice on best one to buy if anyone can help please, there is a bewildering array on the market at wildly differing prices. Also could do with advice as to if I need one with deep sensor as I have the ultra strong gyproc habito plasterboard to ‘look’ through. Thanks in advance for any tips.

Inside I am pretty uniform at around 27 everywhere. Outside has dropped to 25ish (at nearly 11pm) I have had all windows including sliders open fully since 7pm, that has reduced the internal temp from nigh on 30. Off to bed now and risky to leave all sliders wide open on ground floor so all shut and windows open in tilt. 3 dyson cooler fans on full power (have been so for 2 days) and mvhr set to knock your socks off boost with manifold open......I’m hoping this will all help. House has not been below 25.6 at all in last few days....not. comfortable to sleep, I will be on the tiled floor with the dog by 2a.m.

woofer in his cooler coat.... great piece of kit wish they did them for humans. dry cool dog.... damp hot owner!

This is now ...6pm....its been over 35 outside and hovering at 30ish inside, not pleasant. Have small cocoon cool areas created by dysons but step outside that personal cocoon and its way too hot for comfort.

@Ferdinand if you want cheap then these are a bargain but may take a week for delivery and being water based you do need to be vigilant so as not to let bugs grow but as a temp solution.... https://www.gogroopie.com/deal/15i2f5c1b0u/2-in-1 Portable Air Cooling Unit with Remote Control
