Most Amoosing?
Construction Channel replied to Ferdinand's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
I remember a good friend recalling a story of a Devonshire farmer being abused by a bunch of organised trespassers ( commonly known as “ramblers”) because his cattle were spoiling the peace and quiet of the countryside. Also hear many a tale of residents complaining to councils because of tractors disturbing them late at night ( almost undoubtably in harvest time). I really dont don’t understand the mentality of some people. -

Roofing Virgin just lost it.....

the only thing duct tape sticks to is itself, and usually when you dont want it to, I would have thought you want tyvec tape for this? that stuff really does stick well, but you will most likely have to buy it online. the stuff at 5:30 ish it looks different but i think this is the same stuff https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TYVEK-SINGLE-SIDED-ACRYLIC-JOINT-TAPE-FOR-BREATHABLE-MEMBRANES-75mm-x-25mtr-NEW/163135874488?hash=item25fba7e5b8:g:FVwAAOSw8Sta~r-c -
How many screws.....
Construction Channel replied to ToughButterCup's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
Although I like the idea the flip side would be the glove pulling itself into metal things..... like saw blades, I’m sticking to my nail bag and collated screws when I can source them. -

Put a magnet on the end of your tape measure. -

In answer to your question. The width of your mouth/the diameter of the screw, but really you want a nail bag as everyone else said. ? -
Making stairs from scratch
Construction Channel replied to Construction Channel's topic in General Joinery
Something had to go wrong sooner or later. Luckily it wasn’t a fatal mistake, I just need to make sure I cut off the top dowel before I fit that top string.- 95 replies

TBH I don’t really watch a lot of tv. I spend most of my time on Youtube or similar, but why would I make Faye watch a smaller screen if I dont have to ?- 95 replies

Nope, and you can’t make me. It would mean I had to move the tv further left and further down so the first newel post would be in the way from where I intend to put my chair. Maybe on the next one ?- 95 replies

Scratch that, it’ll balls up where I plan to put the tv, which also makes the decision on whether to have the top newels come all the way to the floor, I knew it was a good idea to go to the pub.- 95 replies

Oh dear, while “researching” I have just seen this. its another complication but I kind of like it. I need to think about how it would affect the bathroom underneath but it could turn out quite well. ( the bit I’m talking about is turning the string with the winders instead of making it square).- 95 replies

Decision made, I’m making the lot before I get any glue out. I have also decided this is far too complicated for a sober person so I’m going to the pub for some thinking juice. Let’s hope there isn’t anyone else there as I really do intend to only have a couple, possibly an early dinner.- 95 replies

More progress! Physically cutting things really isn’t taking that long once I got the jigs sorted. Actually deciding the marks are in the rights place is proving to be very time consuming. Now the big question is do I start the next set of strings and house them into this newel on the bench OR do I get the lower part all glued, screwed and fitted and then try to fit the rest while this bit is in situ...... bench sounds the sensible option but I just don’t know. Also I make a pretty clever dowel making set up. First I cut a 11mmx11mm stick on the table saw. Mount that in a cordless drill and spin it through this very crude looking “thing” then i I beat that through this 10mm hole I drilled in this drill bit. Seems to be working ok so far. Also made a jig for cutting the wedges but that bit doesn’t look very impressive. The little screw at the back is for “adjustment”. back to work ?- 95 replies

I’d say you want pneumatic ones if you intend to tackle stones. Say 6-8” should be fine. 2 static and 2 that rotate. Although pneumatic will only be any good if you don’t need to hit anything on the bench. What are you planning to use it for?

The Build - watch out for the pot holes!
Construction Channel commented on Redoctober's blog entry in Our Journey North of the Border
Oh to dream of only a weeks delay, current job I’m working on is a bit of an awkward one in the first place, yesterday I got informed that the start profiles for the cladding are going to take 2-3 weeks instead of the 2-3 days we had been expecting. This has thrown a massive spanner In the works for a whole load of reasons BUT there is F all I can do about it so we will just have to start other things ahead of time. This is all on top of me trying to work out how to make a stair case out of a limited amount of oak of an evening. Plus I would be asking church mice for loans since the wedding as it’s looking like we might have to take out a second loan to get anywhere near liveable, not finished but liveable, BUT as above there is F all I can do about it so what’s the point in worrying. When I find myself in a pit I turn to progress pictures of the build or in my case videos to remind myself how far we really have come. I also find baz lurhmans- everybody’s free helps to put things in perspective. Your build looks great and you seem to have a decent team around you. Worry about the things you can change, chalk the rest of it up as experience. It’s the only way to stay sane. best of luck with the rest of it. Ed -

Construction Channel replied to Pocster's topic in Rainwater, Guttering & SuDS
Could you not run an aco drain across in front of the opening? As it would finish flush with the pavings it would gain you a lot of height. -
