I'm pretty sure I read somewhere on here that UFH manifold pumps should have a delay on them when turning on, presumably to prevent it pumping against closed head while the Salus auto balancing valves open? Is that correct, or do the pumps not mind for a short time? The pumps I have are Wilo, and turn on at the same time as the Salus valves. Would something like this be worth fitting? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/393480531697?var=662286957555

If there's one thing I'm learning about fitting skirting and architrave it's that I enjoy it even less than I thought I would 😤. The plasterers have left an inconsistent and slightly flared out surface near the floor which is a right pain to deal with. How do others deal with this? Do you chisel back the plaster and remake a good surface to attach to? Or set the skirting vertical and fill the gap between its top edge and the wall later? Or just fire it on and be done, somehow making the corners look ok with more filler? Am I being too particular?

Hi folks Does anyone have any recommendations for where to buy stair treads in NI? Oak or similar material. Have tried most of the local builders merchants. Thanks

With my heating system now operation I'm eager to get a data logger on it to see how it's performing and get it set up. Just need a data logger with about 4 channels... I've used Pico hardware in the past, but the price of these is somewhat excessive for all I need, so looking for a more cost effect alternatives. I know others on here have made their own loggers, which I'd love to do but genuinely don't have the time right now to learn how to. Maybe someday. A couple of options include these: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/115424989748 https://www.amazon.co.uk/Instruments-Channel-Thermometer-Thermocouple-Temperature-Main-Unit-88598/dp/B00M9Z3JJ8/?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_w=GsnH3&content-id=amzn1.sym.31c9090c-9b65-4f91-bf37-04dd92281172&pf_rd_p=31c9090c-9b65-4f91-bf37-04dd92281172&pf_rd_r=XK0SMPSNAWYRM7Z4QR67&pd_rd_wg=RjsLH&pd_rd_r=27d9a663-062f-439f-abf8-d542a29b5631&ref_=pd_gw_ci_mcx_mi Has anyone any experience of either f these, or recommendations of other options?

It's mostly mud impregnated hardcore that's there at the mo, which is probably better than whatever lies below it? Plan is to put the textile on it, and then apply a layer of fresh clean crusher run, then the final stone. Another concern after seeing the amount of leaves on the ground in the past week, is whether after a few years these will end up increasing the organic content of the stones anyway.
-
Hi folks I was going to start spreading out a load of 63mm crusher run out the front of the house this aft, but wondering should I put a layer of membrane down first, eg something like a G90 woven geotextile membrane. We'll eventually put stone down on top of it. The ground had the top soil layer removed, and 100mm hardcore put down at the start of the build 2 years ago, buts it's muddy enough now. So concerned about mud making its way up through any new material put down.

Thanks for the reply. I'm also wondering if the drain should be fitted tight to the threshold (orange line in sketch) or more in line with the outside wall (yellow line in sketch)? My initial preference is the former, but there's examples of both on t'internet.
-
Hi folks. I'm considering fitting these type of slotted threshold drains at some of my external doors. Slightly concerned though as to how they could be cleared if blocked up. I like the idea of having easy access. Is there some clever way the slotted bit lifts out or something, or is it just a case of hosing out? Thanks

I had a similar problem with cans of fm330, box of 12 bought from the same eBay seller last year. I used about 7 cans initial, then about a year later none of rest would work. Was like they'd lost pressure, even felt that you could squeeze the can. All still in date.

Yep. 22mm in and 28mm out. The relief valve is 22mm.

Hi folks Any recommendations on how to connect 28mm copper pipe to 32mm waste pipe? The outlet of my tundish supplied with the UVC is 28mm so need to get that to polypropylene pipe. Thanks

Drainage practical: down the trenches
cwr replied to saveasteading's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Me too. I did mine with an old 10mm drill bit held to a 1m level with a rubber band. Level was marked every 100mm, so I could easily slide the drill bit to the gradient I needed. ie, for 1 in 60, move dill bit to 600mm mark.- 24 replies

MVHR condensation trap type
cwr replied to cwr's topic in Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
Thanks for the replies, dry trap it is. -
Hi folks Installing my Vent Axis Sentinel MVHR unit today. The instructions say to use either a water trap or HEPV0 waterless trap. My preference is a water trap, but I have a slight concern that under certain conditions there may be no condensation created and the trap may dry up. Am I overthinking this and nothing to worry about, or is the HEPV0 a better job? If I go for the HEP it'll have to be horizontal. Drain feeds into the SVP. Thanks

Thanks for the replies guys. Good tips for sealing the edges.

Hi all I need to make a ceiling height 'cupboard' for UVC, expansion tanks, pump, valves etc. The other side will be utility worktop. Plan to use a sheet of MDF, but undecided on the spec. It wil be supported at ground and ceiling level and up to 900mm high by the the units that adjoin to it. Trying to decide between 18 and 25mm thick, and if moisture resistant is worthwhile, or something more exotic like external grade or Medite Tricoya Extreme? Any thoughts or recommendations folks? Thanks

Cross drill one truss from the side in a few places to get airtight foam in? After first experimenting with some off-cuts to see what pitch you'd need for the foam to fully fill.

Hi all Has anyone any recommendations for garden design/landscaping books? I could do with starting to thinking about and researching how we convert our outside space into a garden, so want to collect some sources of ideas etc to flick through. Thanks

Ok, Thanks. For the 3m one do I also need these? https://www.screwfix.com/p/3m-501-filter-retainers-pair-no-filter-filter-retainer-only/4984h

Lol. Still more use than the guy in the paint shop this morning, he just gave me a funny look and said sure I'd hardly need any mask...
-
Thanks Carrerahil, that's just the info I was hoping for. So I need this: https://www.screwfix.com/p/3m-6000-series-half-mask-medium-without-filter/4786g and this: https://www.screwfix.com/p/3m-6057-reusable-respiratory-filters-a1b1e1-2-pack/9744g and this: https://www.screwfix.com/p/3m-5935-particulate-filters-p3r-2-pack/9900g It fairly adds up, but sure, cheaper than a new set of lungs...

Hi folks Just got an electric paint sprayer (not airless). Wondering what sort of mask is required for emulsion? Thanks
