Cat5/6 with SWA underground
SteamyTea replied to PeterW's topic in Networks, AV, Security & Automation
Not read the whole thread, but can't you just you one of those power line network things and forget about the CAT5/6. Then just plug in a Raspberry Pi by the gate.- 32 replies

Energy Price Prospects
SteamyTea replied to Ferdinand's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Here is EDF's rates: https://my.edfenergy.com/gas-electricity/unit-rate-comparison Be careful, they assume a certain usage. When we paid a lot for mobile phone calls, I always looked at the price of the most expensive call i.e. once any 'free' calls or texts were used up, then picked the cheapest. I did not pick the cheapest headline figure and assume that the rest was equally as cheap. Mate of mine got seriously ripped off like this.- 10 replies

Energy Price Prospects
SteamyTea replied to Ferdinand's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Did you hear the bit on the radio (MoneyBox I think) a while back about how they work out these fixed deals. Apparently they compare it to what they could charge you, rather than the best deal (or something like that). So it is always worth checking the rental and unit prices as well. You bills will tell you the amount in kWh you have used, simple sums after that.- 10 replies

How to detect hot waste water - thermal glue

It will hit 100% RH very quickly I would think. Probably before the bath is full. -
Energy Price Prospects
SteamyTea replied to Ferdinand's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Generally by between 5 and 8% over the next two years. Nationally demand is set to call, but imported prices are up and the cost of new infrastructure is high. Trump could play a strange one here (don't he always) but encouraging coal extraction for the export. This will then affect world coal prices, and coal is the 'back stop' energy price. Generally, over the last 40 or 50 years, domestic energy price is about 5% of national mean wage (pretty true across the developed world too). So taking a stab at energy prices is similar to taking a stab at wage growth.- 10 replies

I am so tempted to say something, but we now have a 'special' thread for all that sort of thing. -
The logging is pretty simple with a Raspberry Pi. Just a couple of temperature sensors (or more) and something to detect when the pump is on. Then a bit of Python code. There are also "Libraries" (addons) for Python that can be used for plotting, take your pick from the easiest tutorial to follow. StackOverflow is always worth a look at. Though can be a bit pompous about the questions asked.

What shrinkage have you added on? Reminds me of when I worked at a model and pattern makers. @Onoff said " This thread is "what it's all about" as far as I'm concerned. Ed doesn't "have to", could indeed take an easier route but wants to see "if he can". Rediscovering a lost art and some of his local history at the same time. Great stuff! " Why I am building a boat. Not going to be the greatest boat ever, but it will work, in a fashion and I will have designed, built, sailed and sunk it. -

That seems the easy approach, silicone should bond it. You can get them already pre-wired and waterproof. There is code to sense when the temperature changes too. -
Eden uses hexagons that interlock. The frame is quite large and made from aluminium. There are two sheets of polythene in each hexagon and they pump air between them to create a bubble. This helps insulate. Also means you can change smaller areas is there is damage. I think they probably based the design on this chaps ideas: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buckminster_Fuller

They have some large poly tunnels just outside St Awful. I was more interested in how they made them than what was inside first time I went in.

Some 'farm' wiring is dreadful, other are brilliant, until you you want to put on a clamp meter.

Us men really should man up and say about our health worries. I am dreadful at going to the doctors.

No, keep it a dark secret to catch out the unwary.

Isn't it a 'race to the bottom' rather than 'top trumps'.

I seem to remember that in my old cottage in Weymouth, the backing board was Tuffnol. Now there is a product from the past.

Should I have a storm lightning conductor fitted?
SteamyTea replied to readiescards's topic in Electrics - Other
Horses have less tolerence to electric shock than people I believe. Was why those racehorses died when there was a faulty buried cable in a paddock. Think it was at Newbury. No idea what cattle can put up with, but Eddison electrocuted an elephant and the video is online. -
My Aunt had bowel cancer, they removed the cancer, but she lost control of her back bowel for several years and needed more operations. I could not look at the screen much, took my glasses off. It is hard to put them back on when fists are clenched.

My WiFi router is my phone, can charge it in the car. Another good reason to ditch a landline.

Yeah right. I was a ( naughty word Internet criminal ) until I got caught

That happens once I am over 60. This was the full monty, large black snake, nothing like the endoscope I got for a few quid of eBay. They can 'hook' the end as well, and they do at the very end (physically and procedurally).
-
Well it happened, nothing to worry about apparently. A bit of advice, don't try 5 hours of physical work after, it aches a bit

Honda make a 2kW generator that can be linked to another one. I think others make them too. 1 or 2 of them and some battery storage may be the way to go. Or just get some jump leans on the Plug In Hydrids, seems a shame to have a decent battery system AND a petrol engine that cannot be utilised in a power cut.

Serially linked DC-DC charge-controllers - can it be done?
SteamyTea replied to readiescards's topic in Photovoltaics (PV)
That just depends on correct sizing really.
