It's going up!

Just a few new photos of current progress. Tanking was completed and polished concrete slab finished at 2am on a Friday night a few weeks ago. Which meant standard house construction could finally begin. Things have progressed well with no major snags at this stage, up to first floor level now ready for block and beams delivery on Monday. The Steels that arrived were a fair bit more substantial than we were expecting. Lots of fiddly work at this stage but after the 1st floor is in place I'm hoping progress will really ramp up. Roof trusses are ordered for delivery on 4/12/16 so currently still on track to be some form of watertight by Christmas. Large Velfac sliding doors that are going on to the balcony won't be delivered until w/c 9/1/17 so full watertight won't be until then.

My only observation is there are no holes in that steel beam.

It's to late for you, but anyone reading should take note. you really want 3 or 4 good sized (100mm?) holes in every beam.  Otherwise when your electrician and plumber comes to first fix the wiring and plumbing, some pipes and cables are going to have to take a very much longer route to get past that beam, often going down or up into another wall just to get around it.  (the job I am working on at the moment, the steel manufacturer put the holes in, then the builder put them in the wrong way round, so only 1 of the 3 holes is of any use, and it has ended up VERY full)

It's nice to see it taking shape. Most people when it's just a slab think "it's way too small" but when you see it with the walls up, you suddenly realise is is quite big after all.

Haha my Dad turned up on site on Friday and his very first comment before even Hello was, "You're gonna wish you had holes in that beam!"

Looks great, very envious. Nah, not too late for holes in that web. 100mm Starrett and some RTD / Trefolex. Or just gas some through. SE might not like.....

Roger the dog.....isn't that an offence? :) Seriously, if I get another dog I'm nicking the name.

Looks great

What I tidy site

A few people have said that, being my first build I perhaps don't know how good I've got it with my builders. They are a great bunch of blokes though and have a lot of pride in everything they do.

Magnetic base rotabroach, a decent sized cutter - 50mm (65mm is biggest most of them will do), some oil and word with your SE about where best to have holes will sort it in no time, save hours of running round and meters of pipe and cable.

If I can Starrett 70mm in 6mm st/st plate pretty sure I could go bigger in mild...

Over £200 for a 100mm dia Rotabroach cutter...

Fortunately that whole ground floor you are looking at is basement/garage. So hopefully my electric and plumbing routing issues around these beams won't be too significant.

A mobile welder will gas a couple of letterboxes in for you in no time at all. Just check with SE to see if they need to be plated over afterwards to maintain integrity. ?

IF you know where  your cables are going you could put in some flat cable glands like this. I've done it before through I beam webs.

https://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Main_Index/Cable_Accessories_Index/Sprint_Cable_Glands/index.html

If the web is that thick though it's a dead cert that the thread on the gland won't be long enough to get the lock nut on. Then unless you have M20/25/32 drills and taps for ELECTRICAL threads.....

Does make a neat job though.

Your builder is certainly no slow coach! Great progress!

Agreed! Construction started with steel work going in the foundations 7 weeks ago.

Looks like there are some nice gaps between the steels and the floor beams too so cables may not be an issue after all !

Just a few more updates, the monsoon on Monday has caused delays this week but luckily we had some contingency time built in here. Another week to get up to wall plate with the roof trusses arriving 5th December. Can't wait to see the trusses in place and finally get a look at the full size and shape of the place.

Haha thanks, although my £30 syma isn't quite in the same league as yours (Phantom is it?). Although my little tacker has given me the bug and now I want a big boys toy!

Trouble with mine is it has no live viewfinder, so I'm basically flying blind pointing it in a general direction hoping for good footage!

I've got one of those syma Drones- great fun but need to get one with a view finder really.  They aren't so good once the outside is done.
