Bitpipe
Surely weather vane in these enlightened woke times Unless it literally is what she's requesting which would be a sight to behold - bit chilly up there though, so may not be that impressive.
ProDave
ebay is good for finding things though you probably want to find one for sale in the UK https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Weathervane-Roof-Mount-Rooster-Outdoor-Wind-Weather-Direction-Vane-Chicken-Farm/291993131677?hash=item43fc259a9d:g:AQ4AAOSw5cNYb72v

The rafters are exposed (albeit under something like Kloeber Permoforte) ? There will be some fitting that works well - use that - and then cap it off with code 5 lead? As usual, I'm short on detail.....
Ferdinand
Marvellous idea. Here is one way of doing it. Here is another one using a cupola: To me the first one does not look Cumbria-proof. Ferdinand
On a different note, could you consider a locally made one designed for *you*, rather than a generic cockerel ? Should not be horribly expensive compared to a house. I would love to have the chance to do one of those eventually somewhere, but at present I just have inherited gryphons. Personally I would be tempted by something like a bicyclist or a local artisan, or even Duncan Campbell on his lake. But make it worthy of the work and time you have spent building the house; you deserve that fillip. Ferdinand
One thought - will you need Planning Permission, or a variation? Here's a place that do Occupation-based weathervanes, including hundreds of professions: https://www.weathervanes.co.uk/category/weathervanes/occupations/ Cost is £150-£500. Triassic
Nice video @Ferdinand Now for the technical stuff. I like the idea of making a weather vane, I also want to keeping things local. I need to make the mounting rod that fastens to the house. So, what diameter is the rod sticking up from the mounting plate. I assume it’s solid and the weather vane tube is hollow and slides over it?
Triassic
After more searching I’ve found this about the mount8ng rod diameters and mounting https://www.westcoastweathervanes.com/basic-drilled-installation-instructions-for-medium-large-and-extra-large-weathervanes/
Triassic
What’s the likelihood of lightning hitting a copper weather vane? Would I need a conductor to earth? Is a weather vane on the highest point of the house a good idea?

Would I need a conductor to earth? In the world of sailing it is claimed that when a yacht has an earthed mast (big wire electrically connected to a metal keel) then a spiked lighting rod at the top of the mast will discharge a stream of ions in conditions that could lead to a strike. The net result is that a yacht moves within a bubble of reduced electrical potential which persuades a lighting strike to find a path to earth elsewhere.
