flanagaj Posted Saturday at 06:41 Posted Saturday at 06:41 Is there a minimum distance that you need from a gate to the edge of the highway. I vaguely remember that you must be able to position your vehicle off the highway to enable you to open the gate? As all vehicles differ in length, I am unsure what the rules are around this.
DevilDamo Posted Saturday at 06:51 Posted Saturday at 06:51 It differs. Refer to your Highway Authority’s requirements. 1
JohnMo Posted Saturday at 06:52 Posted Saturday at 06:52 If your looking at that you should also look at the visibility splay as well. But this should all be detailed on your planning drawings. 1
nod Posted Saturday at 06:52 Posted Saturday at 06:52 We’ve just done ours The magic number seems to be 3 meters We’ve set ours at 4 to allow a vehicle to safely stop if there’s no one home to open the gate We are on a country lane with no pavement and 60 mph limit 1
Alan Ambrose Posted Saturday at 06:58 Posted Saturday at 06:58 My local highway guys say 3.7m to 5.5m as part of our planning conditions.

Our last build had a pavement and grass verge and good splay vision Our highways simply said NO We ended up putting gates at the side of the house Some eight meters in BUT a build that was completed 12 months after ours (4years ago) Sited there’s at the edge of the pavement About 1 meter from a busy main road As clear as mud
ProDave Posted Saturday at 07:35 Posted Saturday at 07:35 I would say the distance is decided by the longest vehicle you are likely to own. In my case that would be just over 6 metres. But we "solved" the question by just not having gates. Nobody does on our road. 1

We wouldn’t have bothered either But with a 2.5 year old that seems to bolt at every opportunity
Kelvin Posted Saturday at 10:32 Posted Saturday at 10:32 We have dogs sheep and chickens so need to keep them all separated and off the road. Fortunately we have a large guest/delivery van parking area that will be on the roadside of the fence and gate and then a long driveway and secondary parking area that’s behind the gate.

Essex Highways require gates to be a minimum 6m from the highway to avoid a vehicle stopping on the highway in order to open the gates. Footpaths are part of the highway.
JohnMo Posted Saturday at 11:37 Posted Saturday at 11:37 Similar here also. But if you are on a single track road you also need a pull into layby for delivery vehicles (mail etc), so they impede other vehicles.
scottishjohn Posted Saturday at 11:39 Posted Saturday at 11:39 and of course in my area where planning are toal power freaks --its 6m for planning 1

Are you telling us that you've just finished a true self build of a large property between you and your wife, while doing a full time job AND looking after a 2.5 year old? How??
