  1. That’s a great shout. Thanks! That’s almost DIYable….
  2. @PeterW it’s roughly 5.5m span 8.5m long, and I meant trusses not joists! Think it might be worth just starting again with the roof structure with some stubbed eaves to get more hight. Got to take half of it off anyway to get the gable sorted.
  3. I guess the question is will they loose 23% less heat? What are the corresponding U values for the whole unit? Not just Ug.
  4. I’m looking into woodenwindows.com. Seem reasonably priced but can’t find anyone who has used them to get a first-hand review!
  5. Looking at somewhere like wickes and seeing what they had in stock helped us work out a couple of window openings. Good luck!
  6. Looking into replacement of 30yr old uPVC windows and doors. Wanting alu-clad but can’t afford it. Found online ordering from WoodenWindows.com, sister company to Stairbox. Has anyone used them before, and if so, any feedback? thanks!
  7. Where does one find a super strong magnet? Any recomendations?
  8. Who did you choose @ThomasD? We’re considering Allan Brothers at the moment too and looking for others real like experiences.
  9. @CharlieKLP I think the one in your pic looks better because the ‘ski slope’ is broken up by the dormer.
  10. Have you considered LPG? With the price of electricity so high it might make sense. You can burry the tank outside as well so there is nothing to see. Then it’s just a simple (cheep!) combi boiler for unlimited hot water and you can have either UFH or rads of both. We fixed our LPG cost about 6 weeks ago at a shade over 5p per kWh. An air source heat pump would need a COP over 6 to match this at current prices, regardless of increases in the future. Or some big solar panels.
  11. Whilst I completely agree with insulating, the problem isn’t (IMHO) the lovely old buildings in this country, but the mass construction of poorly created houses from 1950s onwards. issues with insulation and draft proofing then lead to an increase in damp and mould. Insulation has to happen with ventilation so isn’t always so straightforward to just bung a shedload more insulation in and plug all drafts. However, back on topic, what price per kWh are we expecting in oct, or what are we expecting the price cap to be and how that equates to a kWh price?
  12. Given that the price cap is going up tomorrow to 30/31p per kWh, what is the current thinking of what it’s going to be in October? I’ve heard wild variations, but thought it’d be best to ask the expert hive-mind of build hub…
  13. We have a flush plate in the kids bathroom that is behind the lid so they have to close the lid to flush the toilet. I think this is a good habit to get into and the design was completely by accident!
  14. I’m not sure that many of the drivers who deliver to us would appreciate me wearing a low cut top…. p.s. no tips here either! Will make tea/provide doughnuts etc for guys and girls on site (but not too much - too many tea breaks and they expect it and the work grinds slowly to a halt) but no money here!
  15. Thanks all! Seems like it was too good to be true. Guess there is someone making a buck or two out of people like me not knowing enough just seeing bills rise quickly!
  16. If you can get in an oil tank in, you can get an LPG tank I’m sure. They can also be buried.
  17. I’m looking at ways to go down the PV route and a quick search on eBay brings up plenty of old panels like this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Solar-Panel-235watts-Madenin-Germany-20pcs-/313782261543?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0 What should I be looking out for? Obv they’ll need all of the micro inverters, mounts etc to complete but it almost seems like a good deal…
  18. It’s a loft conversion, do I need him/her to look at foundations etc too?!?
  19. What size batteries? with the battery backup I doubt you’d be selling anything to the grid, certainly wouldn’t make back the £600 any time soon! I was quoted £4500inc vat for 4kW panels, no batteries flat roof mounted. £1250/kW yours is coming in at around £1600+vat/kW but includes the batteries. Guess that sounds about right or mb a bit expensive?
  20. Looking for an Structural Engineer for a loft conversion. - do they need to be local? - do they need to visit the site? - what info do they usually need? - how much do they charge? sorry for the basic questions, but I don’t want to look like a complete numpty when I start calling them! p.s. any recommendations welcome! p.p.s. If you are an SE please DM me!
  21. I’d be interested to join a BH version for those who are looking at it now…?
  22. That’s absolutely crazy! Ours is going up from around £240 to around £320 with 2xEV and electric aga!! Heating by LPG and were on the price cap with no e7/e10 etc.
  23. We’re 390 inc vat for a 12yd. On our 4th! Was 340inc when we moved in 6months ago. Grrr. 😡
  24. I’m calculating that at my bulk LPG price it’s going to be cheeper to buy a generator and creating my own electrics (calcs below- please check!). questions: - what’s the process? I guess it’s a G98 to the DNO for less then 3.6kWh? - how can I connect to the bulk LPG tank? I know this is a gas safe job, but I’d like to know the process and any extra kit like safety valves etc. - how would I connect it to my home? Again, a job for a spark but I like to know process! - how would it work with PV, am I allowed to have both by the powers that be? calcs: LPG: 35.7p (inc vat) per L (fixed for the next 23 months). Based on Hyundai HY3800LE-LPG 1.6kWh uses 0.7kg / 1.372L of LPG Therefore 30.6p/kWh inc. running at 50% generator capacity. No idea how running at higher capacity changes efficiency. haven’t looked into more efficient generators or taken into account the cost of buying the kit/installation.
