  1. Entrance lobby WC? Pipes have to come down anyway.... M
  2. Yes, with an internal stack terminating through the roof cold air can enter the pipe from both ends. Sometimes the pipe can act as a wind tunnel causing the wall of the pipe, in the house, to get very cold.
  3. a freezing stack would be an extremely rare event in most of the UK However cold bridging due to the cold air in the soil stack rising in the building could be the other problem considered. Also the termination through the roof can be a leaky problem. And again the smaller the diameter of the pipe the more likely to freeze so perhaps the 32 and 40mm pipes are the real concern.
  4. The only other possibility is a slow supply of water (like a dripping tap or overflowing loo) down the pipe in freezing conditions, cold enough to freeze the water before it reaches the pipe where it enters warmer ground. For this reason external condensate pipes have to be insulated.
  5. Checked up. Manufacturers recommendation regarding installation: ASHP to be a maximum of 10 meters from tank for the ASHP to be as effective as rated.
  6. Did I say it's quieter than my freezer?
  7. You have more patience than me! Absolutely true: A poorly insulated and drafty house with an ASHP incorrectly specified used incorrectly will not work properly or will cost a lot to run. I will stick to my warm and cost efficient opinion based on my ASHP heating. And the same here anything above 8C outside and we get warm unless we extract the heat through the MVHR. The nearest mains gas here is MILES away And I cannot produce my own gas (you know what I mean!) but will produce electricity to be used with the ASHP soon! Started my 100m2 property at £500 for water and heating using bottled gas.... will see what happens....
  8. The repeats are not me! (As far as I know) Can someone please clear up my mess. Thank you.
  9. I understand that the vast amount of wood pellets are exported from the USA... https://www.ons.gov.uk/economy/environmentalaccounts/articles/aburningissuebiomassisthebiggestsourceofrenewableenergyconsumedintheuk/2019-08-30 The assessment that this process is carbon neutral is laughable!

  11. Correlation is not necessarily causation. I personally think: Growing wealth = educated people making different decisions amongst other reasons.... Rich enough to be secure: read Power and Greed by Philippe Deane. You are not taking in the human factors of how humans choose. I understand the idea but the reality is some what different. ?
  12. So all rich? So all have the same. So all average??? No chance of success with that idea with humans.
  13. That's the problem. Global solutions require global action. No good me having no children if next door has 4.
  14. I think caution is the word. I think that it depends on the developer. My friend certainly had to obtain permission and the estate was over 20 years old. Secondly when we came to sell the purchasers solicitor questioned us having bushes in the front garden and said we broke the covenant... and our home was built 30 years before. But the original developer was Woodrow. However on another property the developer was no longer trading and the covenant was considered not enforceable. Good luck. M
  15. Reading further, I would suggest you think long and hard about any other changes listed as requiring permission before submitting a request for permission, to save costs. Friend of mine had to obtain permission to lay a patio!
  16. Yes you obtain permission, to have an extension built, from the developer, and have to pay for the privilege, but only reasonable costs, what ever they are. And of course you would need the usual planning permission or permission under permitted development.
  17. Building Regulations document K 2013 page 11?

  19. Perhaps we could just run the batteries and throw away the boiler?
  20. Well I don't know if I want a 500C battery in my shed....
  21. Sue the owner or the contractor.
  22. Iron-air batteries seem to be a future possibility. After a decade of research, types of Iron-air batteries are starting to come to the market. However not for the likes of me yet - more super scale, but if successful I hope it will trickle down to single property systems being charged by PV. My PV system would produce almost all the electricity I would need in a year... if I could store it all...
  23. I am working on the same thought with a client, and it came down to how much time it was going to be used and how much heat would be required. In my opinion a raft foundation with a ring beam around the edge seemed about right to me. Being such a wide area means it could crack like a biscuit otherwise. Aim for the same sort of design as a single detached garage for the foundations. But then you need to consider how often and how long used. If the room is going to be left for 22 hours between uses I would be surprised if the concrete floor would warm up before your son was finished. Thermal resistance of the walls, windows and roof need to be calculated. We have the rough shape. How tall? What's the makeup of the walls roof? Let the pedants talk of the heat produced by your son's training! I'm going to ignore it. Best Marvin
