Bath Surround / Boxing In, and concealed pipework
Hecateh replied to Onoff's topic in Bathrooms, Ensuites & Wetrooms
I had it on my list - but that was way back before BB threw a huge spanner in the works. I should have been in May / June. Still not there. Hopefully not too much longer although trying to do it (organise individual trades and buy materials) myself when I don't have any idea what I'm doing is proving challenging - very challenging. Still looking at that shower head but much more expensive now. Maybe settling for a smaller one! Making compromises with most things -
Bath Surround / Boxing In, and concealed pipework

British bathrooms do a price match. From my limited research they seem cheapest for most Hudson Reed stuff - worth checkng if you are buying other stuff at the same time -
I wasn't convinced BB wouldn't do something like that. Not as a planned thing but if there had been a digger handy when he lost it I certainly wouldn't have put it past him.

Urinals - anyone ever considered them?
Hecateh replied to Vijay's topic in Bathrooms, Ensuites & Wetrooms
Night Clubs in my era - Mens and Womens loos are same size. Mens get 8/10 urinals and one or two cubicles. Women get 5/6 cubicles. - No wonder there were queues When the actual build was going on the only time the guys came into the house they weren't wanting to pee! My daughter tried that at 13 months. Her brother (2 and a half) was learning and having accidents. She quickly knew what to do - unfortunately her aim wasn't good I got one - great when out walking - especially where there are nettles - still need tissues though Surely that's even worse with a bucket - it might not even be all your own -

Urinals - anyone ever considered them?
Hecateh replied to Vijay's topic in Bathrooms, Ensuites & Wetrooms
When my kids (now older than many of you) were toddlers. Son (just over 2) learning to use potty. Daughter (15 month). I can do that. He had more 'accidents' than she did BUT she couldn't hit the potty. He didn't sit down, then why should she? -
No bath in my new place but in the existing one I have a hand shower over the bath as well as both a hand and rainfall in the walk in

Mine is one of those Buuuuuuuut the water pressure is so good that if it is left on the handset and switched on without thinking the holder forces itself upwards and sprays the ceiling and the whole bathroom over the screen! MY New One is Fully Planned to be Separate!!! At least we are only cleaning up after ourselves
-
Can't do that with a rainfall shower They are one and the same ... and based in Bradford not far from the M62

Tell her you've cocked up and if you do it in white it will be obvious but if you do it in grey no-one will ever see it. ... Then follow up with 'it's easy to put white over grey if you still don't like it in 6 months time'. I much prefer the grey BUT I can see why some people like the white - if it is absolutely perfect; if not it will show forever - or at least until the white discolours

My sparky today was talking about a job he had recently done where the owners had diy'd a resin floor with marbled dyes. They said it looked good - if you liked a pink, blue and purple marbled effect. the surface is was good though

What's the going rate for a topographical survey?
Hecateh replied to Andrew's topic in Surveyors & Architects
Mine was £500 inc VAT last September. -
Echoing the sentiments of many on here. Many of us regret not finding it sooner than we did. Don't do anything without checking back on here. Things that seem straightforward often aren't. Many people on here have experience (trade or personal) in so many areas and are more than happy to share their experience.

My plot was free (part of my garden) but probable cost had I sold it (I wish) was between 30 and 50k. My architect told me I could build my house for 100k, so did my builder. Currently at 170k and counting. I wish I had never started - I'm trying to move on but struggling to do so at present.

I need a magnifier..... eyes ain't what they used to be

Cheap reading glasses of different strengths. I used to use strength 1 most of the time but also have a couple of pairs of 3 for close work -
I wanted to build this house 10 years ago but the council wouldn't let me because it is a garden plot. Things change and I suspect it is their obligation to ensure there are plots for self builders and to provide more homes overall that prompted the change of heart. 10 years ago I would have been much more involved in the process and attempted at least some of the jobs myself. Regardless of age being just a number I know I am not as fit or as confident as I was. The main form of future proofing I am prepared to invest in is ensuring I can stay here whilst ever I am fit enough to care for myself. I am not interested in future proofing it for future sale as that is my kids problem and technology will almost definitely have moved on (- or totally crashed) within 20 to 30 years. Both my parents lived into their 90's so genes at least suggest a long life. The electrician is happy to lay the cable if I supply it, so if the offer is still open @PeterW I can come and pick it up later today or any time over the weekend - the electrician needs it for Monday.

Yep that looks like it will do the job. £89 on Amazon

I'm not that savvy, and was only thinking of being able to see who is at the door - and then being able to ignore them or ask them to give me some time to get upstairs - hopefully won't need that facility for another 20 years or so though ?

Plug in Fire TV only works wireless I think I have a PC but only use my laptop, tablet and phone. Printer can go close to the router - probably only use once or twice a month The one thing that I think would be useful is CCTV and sound to the front door. Future proofing, as I am getting older. He's here tomorrow and Monday. I'd be happy to come and pick up the reel Peter, if it is spare

Electrician is happy to do it if I want - at a cost of course but doesn't think it necessary Thing is, there is only me here and it is a small property (Footprint only about 64 sqm). Wireless works fine in my current house.

First fix in progress I keep seeing posts on here about cat 5 / cat 6 should I be having this fitted along with electrics?
