  1. Ouch. We ditched the idea of a stove in a house that would actually have benefited from it because it was just too expensive, even using an existing chimney.
  2. You don't get one of those with a cheap sander!
  3. Would £600 be the price for a twin wall flue? As @Trw144 has said single would be much cheaper. Is twin wall required given the already lined masonary chimney?
  4. I need to fit air bricks in a new external leaf, 9" x 6" gaps have been left . As a new ground slab is in place there are 2 x 100mm diameter pipe in the slab leading through to the original under floor void. Is there a preference for plastic or clay bricks? (I should also check in the void that the ends of the pipes are open under there and no current infestations)
  5. The only advantage I've found with proper sander sheets is the pre punched holes for vacuum extraction - if you're using it.
  6. My wife is Greek and eventually, we will move to Greece. She's just gone to Crete with the boys. Her mother runs a dozen holiday apartments, I'll be heading out for a few weeks at the end of August. Her Dad is a fisherman so we should get out for a trip in the boat too. Hard work to do before then though
  7. Cheers, let me get sorted for the weekend and I'll see how I get on.
  8. I see it from the other side. Increasing numbers of people including families forced to rent. No choice on white goods and appliances that use energy and no say in the fabric of the property they live in - and we all know the standard of UK houses. They can't just move to a better place because the market is unlikely to support it whether it be cost or availability in a suitable location. Using a catch all about 'some people' who can move is a lazy generalisation. Similar to the oft used young people prefer to rent as it gives them flexibility. No they don't its just a convenient excuse for their forebears to ignore the problem. With food, I see that as incredibly cheap and we're clearly doing something wrong with it if you consider the likes of obesity and diabetes. So what its to be done? Is it public information that has reduced the incidence of smoking or the rip your face off taxation?
  9. Not unlike Mr Harris I have a bathroom to tidy up. Doing the final 90% of niggly, PITA tasks that should have been done at the time. Not exclusively but off the top of my head: Completely replace the vinyl interlocking tile flooring (including removal of toilet and repair/replace sections of floorboards and 6mm ply subfloor) Fix bath waste trap leak Fix bath tap fixing leak Make access panel for tile bath panel Seal up old loft hatch Rake out and fill ceiling cracks Replace some wall plaster Paint door and replace ironmongery Seal up inside former airing cupboard Replace light in cupboard Put shelving in cupboard Replace cupboard doors Replace MDF window sill with tiles, sealing, insulating underneath. Fit trim to drawer unit base Clean sink of PU foam residue Re-fix bathroom mirror I really need to fit a ceiling extractor fan too. I’ve had a tile vent fitted in the roof and could manage physically fitting a fan unit of sorts but couldn’t do the wiring at the moment unless someone walked me through it. Sticking heated mirror pad on the back of the bathroom mirror is another on the wishlist. No doubt I will remember more as I start work this weekend.
  10. I'm surprised by that. I recall you were less sympathetic when it came to fuel poverty. I assumed at the time you were being genuine.
  11. As you seem to be a man who hates the waste of energy, is this not a good thing? Food production being like an extension of energy usage after all.
  12. In my line of work, it reminded me of a shielded concrete pipe bridge. i don't want one of them in my garden. As as I understand it and all the drains were done, the sewers come out the front of the house not the back
  13. Only in the same way as British rail.
  14. I've discovered concrete blocks about 200mm/10" under the surface running north/south, parallel to the stream a few metres from that boundary. from the pre-purchase surveys, there shouldn't be any utilities running through here. But I haven't worked up the courage to dig out a block to see what's underneath.
  15. Came early to Manchester, today. Beer o'clock from 4. Do very little on the house at the moment. Wife leaves me for a few weeks now so I need to get back on it. Long list of things still to do.
  16. He wasted the last of his SBR by leaving it in an open jug.
  17. That's next weekend sorted.
  18. The wife is out so I'm dry tonight. Maybe a non glue night cap when she's back.
  19. Is there enough room to notch in the profile from end on and chisel the bits off and tidy up afterwards? that would be a relatively straight forward multi tool task would it not?
  20. Because D4 does not mean PU! that cheap toolstation stuff is D4 standard waterproof PVA based stuff and I've been using it on all sorts from kids craft stuff to flat pack furniture. Much better than basic PVA as it's quicker drying for a start.
  21. Nick that's a D3 class/grade PVA based glue.
  22. I don't get it on my Mac...
  23. Those are both PVA types though aren't they? I use the t'station version. I'm yet to use a PU glue D glue grades http://www.constructionchemicals.co.uk/blog/2015/07/13/what-are-d1-d2-d3-d4-adhesives/
  24. I put a MDF window board in a bathroom last year. The shower blasts straight on to it and it was used 2+ times a day for nearly a year often had standing water. It did "bloom" early on but I sanded off the sharpness of the edges and repainted and it's been ok since. Needed to use proper slow dry gloss paint, leave it dry and harden for days before putting anything on it and keep soap off it that seems to lift the paint. I wouldnt be be worried about putting an MDF board elsewhere and have 3 boards to fit plus 3 more to size and buy before fitting. When I get around to it, I'll replace the bathroom one with tiles.
  25. To paraphrase cjard and I am just repeating from his other place post, he says its used to reduce dust but must congeal/lump in some parts.
