Good to see that your wind based incidents are becoming less serious.

I think I need a partially enclosed car port to the side of the house. Nothing to big probably 28sqm. (4*7) and I’d like it to fit into the rural location. So I could build it like an agri shed out of corrugated stuff. But as we have lounge windows looking out over it i think I’d like a green roof. No doubt the official stuff is expensive, but a wooden tray on a slope with say 8*2 rafters and a 3/4 ply base covered in pond liner? That should be an effective base? Has anyone made one?

We used waterproof flooring and just fitted it sans windows.

Mines in the wall. Wonder if you can do the same trick? Just a lintel in the blockwork and plaster board either side

We’ve had three houses on shared access roads including the current one. They’ve all been little hassle (more than none) and if you have a couple of active residents both physically and proactively it’s fine, we resurfaced the first two and sorted bits of drainage cost a few hundred per house. The current place will be sorted in the summer, we’ve stopped run off from the main road washing it out, and we’ll put some proper fall into the beck and resurface in summer. Not big effort compared to building a house but some effort involved.

We have our nest smokes set out to do this. They are in key locations so the night light function can get you round the house to the loo at night!

But probably more important is a sense of fun and design?

Deffo twin dishwashers, and shower controls outside the shower. Overlays of lighting to create texture. Don’t just wang a 40w pendant in. Get creative

Agreed, but the point I’m making is that as much as you can try and guide, sometimes you get a brief that just doesn’t fit the customers pockets or they just don’t want to hear that they can’t afford it. ’... let’s get the design sorted, we’ll value engineer later...’ it’s wrong, but it does happen.

And brief.... as an architect (albeit of software) you’d be surprised what people ask for...

You’ll get some good guidance here. I don’t want to take the wind out of your sails but do think hard about what this is going to be like and how long it’ll take.

It’s a hell of a life style change from Perth. Would you really want to grow old somewhere that remote? I’m slightly amazed that if it takes that much stuff to build a drive that it’s not cheaper to pile it. But I guess getting a wagon of concrete is nontrivial as well!

What’s it worth 150-200k or so? Probably governed by the rental income?

That’s what I suspected, I can’t fathom how much that would add to a truck load of stone. 100’s if not 1000’s per load

Do they have to bring in the aggregate via ferry? That must be a face melting cost!

Thinking about it, our front doors must be in that area. They are 1.8 or 1.9m wide and 2.4m tall.

I was going to have a set of bifolds in the rear of the garage for exactly that purpose. Due to cost cutting I’ve ended up with two pairs of French doors.

What’s the concern with Velfac? We’ve got them fitted. Decent kit in my view. I would agree they are a bit of a bind to deal with though. Let me know if there’s owt we can do to set your mind at rest or qualify your concerns
