I think a word with the carpet shop is in order. Detailed check on the quote. £275 for gripper rod! 780for fitting exclusive of materials - ok but if it’s 2 men 2 days. Looking like the wrong underlay and a 300 markup on that. Everyone needs to make a living but!

My plan is to use the fibaro HC2 to read my calendar for heating the office above setback temp. The music room / guest room will probably be monitored using a door switch and if the door is opened for a prolonged period of time - say 5mins then we’ll fire the temp to living standard for an hour or so. We could probably override with a guest calendar but or a switch on the Murphy bed. But that could be GUST (gratuitous use of superfluous technology...)

Isn’t this stuff what the heatmiser smart start stats are about? Learning how long it takes to hit temp and starting appropriately?

Hmm. I needs underlay. I’ve been quoted 660 for 138sqm of underlay for the beds, snug and hallway. This is carpenter 8mm stuff. A brief eBay check suggests that I can get carpenter 12mm for about 290quid for 137sqm. That’s a decent saving, but will the wet UFH still work? I am right in thinking there is little skill in laying underlay. Broadly unwrap, put on floor, make tea?

Firebelly fire bricks replacement
Lesgrandepotato replied to Lesgrandepotato's topic in Stoves, Fires & Fireplaces
Perfect, thanks Ian -
I bought the stove maybe a year back in rough condition in a yard. It’s since been repainted and reglazed. Today I fitted the firebricks in. One to the rear, two sides and a top baffle. There is is a surprisingly small gap between the top baffle and the top of the stove? Is this to be expected? I’d sort of assumed a decent sized gap would be present. But I’ve never had me head up one of these before.

We’ve just fitted one, we retained the old boiler and fitted the new TS and UFH throughout. The old system was full of hideous lumpy crap in every rad, so I figured for the investment it was worth it to try not to silt it the New with all that from the old setup that was in the boiler

Board and skim, you’ll hate yourself when you change the kitchen if not. -
Solutions for making a small house feel big
Lesgrandepotato commented on caliwag's blog entry in caliwag
More artifice to be found here, an elevation that was designed to be looking like a barn entrance. Before and afters attached. I’d be interested to hear how you present it @caliwag artifice and pastiche is a dangerous thing, but being part of a vernacular is key. -

That’s interesting caliwag, we have also taken in an internal window, it’s there for two reasons really, one to bring the lounge in contact with the rest of the house, and it’s shape is driven by artifice and interest. We’ve massive redesigned the house and I wanted the building to read like that in places. Hence we have a window that looks like it could have been door ( as part of the previous mill building ) but in reality it’s all new... There is a top lurking here about pastiche and creating something that feels right. The window In question -
Solutions for making a small house feel big

I do find the concept of borrowed space interesting, our current cottage does this well with a couple of nooks and areas that whilst not adding greatly to the floor space do give the perception of greater space. I’m also a great fan of the little vistas you describe with thinks presenting more than just the plain. -
Yes, we have a similar situation. No signal in the kitchen, edge at the front door, 3G upstairs and 4g in the loft...

And stick a payg mini mifi hub in the loft above the insulation and be sorted on the internet

Oh dear..... 'Nother fine mess....

You can do better than this. We got a lorry stuck in a tree. All because the Telford delivery not told us the thermal store was 100kg. So we dared him to get as close as possible. Once it was in the tree it turned out the store was a really easy lift. :-) -
The end is nigh!
Lesgrandepotato replied to Lesgrandepotato's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Cheers @Nickfromwales it’s quite the piece of kit. I expected it to be heating up the whole utility but it’s practically room temp on the outside of the store. The only leakage is off the pipe work! Updates coming thick and fast now. Today’s is the final stair parts going in.. you need to look closely to spot my favourite detail... -

Clean details is a bit of a mantra for the build, but it never ceases to amaze me what fellow buildhubbers notice! -
All the lighting circuits are on, the thermal store is hot. The kitchens in, bathrooms tiled. Glass for the stairs has been delivered and there is only the chimney to plaster. Dare i I dream that the end is actually in sight?

Powered openers? And provision for electric blinds? Look fab to me! North light is usually the most consistent as it doesn’t vary with the sun -
I’ll be getting that ordered up!

Bit more information, all the bulbs show full brightness in another lamp. Each one can be pulled individually and the others remain lit (suggesting they are not in series) . Had a hunt in the loft to see if we had inadvertantly wired in a 12v driver - not present... Therefore the challenge must be before the first light in the circuit, time to get the multimeter out.

What does First Fix really mean?
Lesgrandepotato replied to ToughButterCup's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
It means knowing much more about where stuff is going than you ever imagined, and at a detail level previously unconsidered. Do you have a detailed lighting design? you are going to need one, Do you have a detailed kitchen design? you are going to need one, Do you have a detailed bathroom design? see above... Do you know where the outside tap(s) are going? will it be hot and cold? see above...
