That is very true. I was talking to a local estate agent (in the pub) about my place recently. He said "you are having granite worktops aren't you? People expect them round here."). Houses these days remain a consumer purchase for the masses. Just go and look at the show home of any developer and that's clear to see.

LMAO. That nails it describing the majority of us on this forum Perhaps though add; mad, crazy, poorer, tired, sleep deprived, stressed. Ooooh and I built timber frame then added a cavity, concrete blocks and render. That means I almost built it twice. I'm clearly fully paid up :). Oh hang on "ecocentric" I thought you'd typed "eccentric".

Why are most PV installed "portrait" rather than "landscape"
Barney12 replied to DenkiJidousha's topic in Photovoltaics (PV)
OK, sorry. Could you post a link to the system you use as that’s good information for all the forum readers. -
But, yet again you are focusing on “cost” and “average/normal”.

Why are most PV installed "portrait" rather than "landscape"

No they don’t. None of the “in roof” systems work in the way you describe as far as I’m aware. Plenty of correct information on this forum, search GSE as a starter. -
Wow, that’s a massive oversimplification. “no reason“ ? There are plenty of reasons why people choose timber frame, speed of build is just one of them. Your statement over cost might be true for a “developer built box” on a one off basis but is not always the case for a self builder. Oh oh and one last thing; all the self builders I’ve met have never listed “profit” as primary driver.

Oh deep joy

Good point regarding re-sale. Mind you I'll probably end up keeping it

I have the 14v and find the 2 batteries supplied fine. It charges before I've used the first one.

James, try and get yourself a Senco duraspin. Absolutely bullet proof, especially if you use the duraspin strips. Not cheap but they sell well second hand on eBay so you'll get a good deal of your cash back. I bought my strips from here on recomendation from this forum: http://www.collatedfasteners.co.uk

VAT on bat removal
Barney12 replied to vivienz's topic in Self Build VAT, Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), S106 & Tax
The answer I received was “no” as it’s professional services (just like say your architect and/or engineer etc). If you find a different answer (as ours was also a planning condition) I’d be very interested to hear it. -
I was “off the record” told that 150mm was the accepted “margin of error” for width and depth. As others have said though ridge height can be an entirely different matter.

The MSDS would suggest not. https://www.everbuild.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Everbuild Wonder Wipes SDS.pdf

How deep is your lake?

Is the cabin a registered dwelling or simply a temporary/garden structure? I don't know enough about the regs but it would look like a candidate for "DIY" dismantling to me and nothing to do with your build. One thing is for sure; ask the question the wrong way and the answer will always involve a "yes" and a "fee".

recommendations for low profile frame sliding glass doors
Barney12 replied to Adamantium's topic in Windows & Glazing
Yes, and it’s one of the few of our Internorm windows which doesn’t leak and isnt difficult to lock -
Hi, yes I'm now in direct contact with GSE. As you would perhaps expect they seem to want to blame the installation and not following the install guidelines but they are being helpful. I am 1000% confident that the install instructions were followed to the letter. How do I know this? Simple; because I'm 1000% anal about detail and I was there! But, as you say what I'm more interested in is ensuring it doesn't happen again.

The entire thing is an absolute racket. The licensing system by NE and the ‘chosen few’ prefered by DNP basically mean they’ve got you by the bollocks.

Not easily no. Hoping I can get scaffold up this week. Waiting for a call.

Yes. CT-1 discussed today as an option. Manufacturer likes to use that sticky flashband stuff as an alternative to ali flashing but I have no confidence in the stuff up here.

Yep GB! You have my major sympathies So much I could write! It has indeed been an incredible winter for windy weather. Last night was bloody scary up here, the sheer force at which the gusts were hitting the side of the flat was incredible.

Its the top flashing which is aluminium. I'm kicking myself as I replaced the lower flashing with lead. They supplied that god awful corrugated flash band type product which I have no faith in. They do say in the manual that you can use lead (or lead substitute) instead of the aluminium system. I've either got to find a way to bond the aluminium flashing down to prevent it lifting or just use lead. The aluminium top system does have a c shaped section that slots onto the top row of panels but its only c20mm deep and my suspicion is that the clips that hold the flashing down (2 per strip) on the top edge have slowly moved with the wind force of this winters storms thus allowing the channel to pop off the top of the solar panels and lift. The second annoyance is that my roofing mate that helped me put the panels in wanted to nail the top edge of the flashing to the battens but I wouldn't let him and said we should follow the manufacturers instructions and instead used the little galvanised clips which overlap the flashing and screw down. Can't help thinking a few nails along the top edge would have prevented the movement. ho hum

Yes, its the SW winds which always get us. They come straight up the valley and smack into the first large object; my house!
-
Don't even get me started on bloody windows. My Internorm windows leak in this stormy weather.

I've emailed the supplier. No response yet.
