Is installing guttering an easy job?
Kevin J replied to Thorfun's topic in Rainwater, Guttering & SuDS
Soldering Zinc Gutters is an art. in France, where Zinc Gutters are popular, it’s probable you’ll see Cast Iron pipes at ground level especially on street scene as zinc pipes can be easily squashed. The alternative is to slip a plastic pipe inside the lower pipe as reinforcement -

Warm v's Ventilated Roof - Which Way to go ?
Kevin J replied to bob the builder 2's topic in Roofing, Tiling & Slating
Underlying question for any warm roof. Is the Vapour Control Layer adequate for purpose, adequately installed and 100% sealed against leakage into the roof void? if the answer is a resounding Yes, a warm unventilated roof is possible. if in doubt however, ventilation. By way of a minimum 50mm void directly under the substrate timber, plywood or OSB3. note: a ventilated Softwood under zinc is how it’s been done in Europe. Plywood and OSB3 were not around. The standing seam technique is also relatively new, in the grand consideration of zinc. if you use OSB3 or Plywood almost every zinc manufacturer will recommend a Structured Underlay such as ISO-Mat Metal. Even if the rear of the zinc has been coated! by far going with ventilated softwood, Vac Vac treated. (Avoid Copper treatments) GreenCoat PLX is not susceptible to underside corrosion so you have greater liberty on the support structure. Aluminium is another proposal. More traditional detailing at penetrations. Metal cost will undoubtedly have a bearing. the ventilation void must be increased on lower or longer slope lengths to potentially evacuate moisture build up - a chimney effect. wet insulation doesn’t perform correctly either. finally, we live in a wet climate. Moisture retained during construction has to escape. Ventilation -

The SS Snaplock panels were rolled to width and length and transported to Newport where the PV modules were attached. The complete units were then shipped to Bicester. The bonding process can be carried out by MSL to reduce additional transport charges. currently have no information on removal. It’s a valid question. Will revert on this shortly

Focus for comparison on Yield. Currently costs are higher than Glass modules but a new, more attractive product will be available in 2022. Of course lower cost might be lower frills. The Teflon self cleaning might be an obvious casualty here. These modules do not prohibit foot traffic so are suitable for either easy install Snaplock, minimum tooling or a Traditional SS which is closed mechanically or by hand on site. Aesthetics incur cost in most purchases. Wiring in this project is at the ridge secreted in the ridge detail. The module can be wired from the rear if access is available from the loft space or at the bottom via an overhanging eaves for example No bracket and rail mounting = reduced weight, no debris build up, no vermin (pigeons) Minimum maintenance

Yes there are pre-pressed sheet effect products, often as lightweight products offering the appearance of slates or tiles. I agree the complication of cutting and forming complex weatherproof junctions such as Hips and Valleys can be problematic. several companies for instance offer metal pressed sheets as replacement for conservatory roofs. Some are now exploring SS including Snaplock. In essence the detailing is key in either option

With future legislation on Green Energy I thought it worth posting an image of the Integrated Solar Modules installed on this staining seam this Self-Build at Graven Hill. increasingly popular

Off the shelf items only fit an off the shelf building. A tailored solution is available for self build enthusiasts search SNAPLOCK in PLX or visit NSBRC, Swindon to see in the flesh. if the installation needs a professional seek advice from the official distributor of the selected metal.

Metal Roof system suppliers are introducing price increases with up to 80% being put about. Already several system suppliers have full order books with extensive lead times in 2022 Standing Seam is now widely adopted. Work with reputable distributors who can offer installer details or product installation trading and with those who have stocks

Agree with earlier comment on choice of material. A metal roof at this low pitch would have been good investment. ideally a metal that doesn’t need ventilation, GreenCoat PLX, Stainless steel, push the boat out-with the budget and use copper

A box gutter Fabricated in Roofinox Tin Matt Grade 316 Stainless steel could be a simple investment at 0.5mm thick its lightweight so easily handled on site, no underside corrosion issue, boxed ends can be folded, origami style with outlet and internal corners soldered to design or in situ. Properly Done once it's then forgotten with the exception of leaf cleaning every spring www.roofing-tools.com supply soldering equipment and or fabrication services

Hi @GraemeHM detailing around rooflights with standing Seam isn't for the faint hearted. I know a number of 'professionals' who would struggle with Aluminium in particular. Prefalz is a great material. Good Technical back up in the UK. I'm fairly sure we can connect you with a suitable installer if you think the detailing too risky, or provide detail on the training possibilities. As you can imagine PREFA training is geared at contractor Installers who they are investing time with, it's less commercially attractive to get down at the sharp end with Mr & Mrs Jones's one of roof. If you need help send me a direct message, location and plans along with a contact number and I'll take a peek to see if we can give some specific guidance.

@Simon R with the Snaplock there are no cover flashing sitting on kerbs and the design avoids through fixings both in Sheet or at Perimeter detailing. Each system has its own Nuance and cost so measuring one against another is never simple, beauty is in the eye of the beholder

Seamed metal roofing or catnic SSR2 advice required

@Dunny1234 consider also the cost in your comarison. Clips that attach to a substrate are fixed £69.00 per 1000 and expansion £59.00 per 400 You use a specific arrangement to offer security (fixed) and thermal expansion of the roof. Thermoseam Clips which are supplied as clip with tube to go through the insulation are more expensive. Ball park on average you will use up to 10/m2, soon adds up! You will also need the correct fixing to go down the tube appropriate to the anchoring material as well as a drive bit to insert in the tube. Note: some distributors will charge for the tube and the stainless clip as separate items. The structural reliance of the rigid insulation is paramount for the life of the building. Someone else may need access to the roof area after the metal is installed -

Oil Canning - has many factors to consider the substrate is one, if it's wrong how would your propose to fix the roof to it, the metal generally follows the shape. Also can the metal be fitted avoiding walking over it During installation - think Ridge - think rooflights. the reflectiveness of the metal will draw you eye to any misshapen Panel. It's a function of the viewing distance, you move, your view changes along with the shape of the roof. the installer makes a massive distance width and length of panels, ease of handling to the roof, during transport etc. Colour can impact images are a Stainless steel roof installed by a professional, possible the least forgiving metal being hard, reflective (low reflective here Roofinox Classic) and sharp. Only 0.5mm thick! Finally off-site rolling. If you are using it then make suitable decisions on handling, loading the sheets to the roof and installation. Training is provided but may not give this much food for thought. substrates: some are incompatible with the metal. Take guidance. some substrates such as Hard Metal Board provide structural support with Insulation, a 2 in 1. Note: Roofinox Classic is uncoated. Pictures courtesy of Install Zinc, Chigwell -

@Dunny1234 A cold ventilated construction has been the method of construction for zinc roofing across Europe. Use 'penny gap' 25mm thick softwood boards as the deck supporting the zinc and you can't go far wrong. If there is condensation with in the roof build up the timber will be able to dry, the air will also protect the back (underside) of the zinc and allow a natural patination on the metal surface. If you build using plywood you MUST isolate the zinc from the plywood using a structured underlay as ISO-Mat Metal. It has always been forbidden to lay zinc directly onto Plywood. Warm roofs have become popular and IF installed correctly can offer some advantages. The Vapour Control Layer (VCL) must be specified in accordance with the level of humidity expected within the building and installed correctly to prevent moisture breaching into the roof construction - for the life of the building. DM Drawings if you need project specific advice or guidance? -

Hi, you can purchase directly through the website. should you decide the installation is too demanding, skill level for example, a training course is available. If you need tooling this is also available. If other constraints such as time present an obstacle we provide details of competent Installers
