I have a feeling I'm being a bit stupid, but I', trying to work out what I need for my bath. I want a wall mount bath tap with a single lever mixer, but with a diverter to a hand shower head. As my wife pointed out it's basically the same as we have in the shower but a spout instead of a rose head. So just want a bit of help on what items I should be looking. Thanks

They look good. How are they connected to the stringer?

Hi All I'm looking for advice on what type of timber to use deep treads on a steel and timber stair case. I'm looking at using a local fabricator to do the staircase stringers and balustrade with myself making the treads. The stair case will be a bit industrial and i don't mind if the treads are a little rustic. I want the threads to be solid wood, 88mm deep, 250 wide by 900. so what type of wood for this? and who could supply at this size. I look forward to hearing your suggestions Thanks

18 volt multi tool, do they have enough sustained oomph?
GaryM replied to epsilonGreedy's topic in Tools & Equipment
I treated myself to a set of cordless tools a few months back, Screwfix own make Erbauer. I'm really pleased with them including the multitool. All are brushless with inter changeable batteries, including 5 amp batteries which do last a long time. So somewhat cheaper than dewalt etc. but works very well -
We are just about to go into battle with BC over first floor fire escape. We too have a gable end window, but with a sliding door with a Juliet balcony. I can't quite understand but this can't be considered a fire escape as we could lock it. From my perspective the answer is "well we won't lock it", I have a feeling that will not be acceptable.

Windows....which company did you choose and why?
GaryM replied to Tom's Barn's topic in Windows & Glazing
@Mr Punter Thanks for responding, The double sliding doors are quite large, but are actually at first floor level and will have a juliet balcony, so will not get any traffic through but will just open for us to admire a view. Idealcombi now do the installation, so if I go with them I will use there installers. In what way do the larger doors not operate correctly? by the way we are looking at Futura+ doors and windows. Thanks -

I'm know slowly getting use to the fact the windows are going to cost over double what I have budgeted for. I had intended to go for aluminium windows and doors, but for some unknown reason nearly all the quotes are for alu clad timber, I'm really not sure how hat happened. Anyway it seems we have to front runners Idealcombi and Rationel. I think I prefer Idealcombi, the sliding doors are inline with the glazing and uses a single track also I like the double outward sliding doors, my wife prefers the Rationel as the sliding door has a single handle and also used larger panes of glass. Both quotes are similar, but some what better than the rest. I will be using the suppliers i.e. IdealCombi or Vindor for Rationel to do the install. I just need to decide which to go for. -
I might well do that, I shall have a conversation with the builders.

@Bozza Our 4g is pretty good and I could set up a router, however our aged parents still like phoning the landline. So I rather not get rid of it yet, worst case I will leave the overhead line in.
-
Hi, I believe the pole is owned by the electricity company and it has the phone line on The pole is not on my land, it's a yard away. We are the only house on the pole Yes we have good 4 g Yes we are trying to get rid of the overhead cables and put them underground
-
I've had an overhead electricity power supply cable put under ground, free of charge. On the same pole is my phone cable, I've have already head openreach do a survey, £336 for 5 minutes of work. They now want £1500 to do the actual work, disconnecting the existing line, routing down the telegraph pole, through an existing trench and connecting to house. £72 for material and the rest for 8 hours labour. As the timings have all been round up to the nearest hour my guess is in reality it will be less then 4 hours of work. (electricity guys did there side in 3 hours). So is there any alternative to openreach i can use to connect the line? On principle I just don't want to use them, there customer service just seems to suck and they want £500 an hour. Thanks

Untreated Siberian larch will go silver grey, that's one of the major reasons we picked it for our cladding

I'm just outside northampton, we dug the foundations and after the rain this week we now have a series of narrow swimming pools!. We have do have clay so are just doing trench foundations, not a really problem. Although building control are still saying we will need a soakaway... the idea behind a soakaway is the water soaks away... On a serious not, if the trees are sucking up the water the clay will be hard, then it will shrink, put a lot of water on it and it will swell, best just to go with the trench foundations

We are going for revised planning permission for a coated aluminium seam roof from Bradclad, however the planning officer has come back with some reservations, basically saying a metal roof is not suitable for a dwelling! although they have not closed the door completely. Does know of any metal seam house roofs in Northamptonshire? I'm quite surprised to hear they are not suitable for domestic dwellings, I guess a lot of people and architects must have got it wrong recently Thanks

Windows....which company did you choose and why?
GaryM replied to Tom's Barn's topic in Windows & Glazing
@thorfun, so far IdealCombi is the lowest quote so far and includes solar glass. But looking at costs to other quotes and previous work we done . two years ago I had a glazed gable end with bifolds and two large windows from Origin 22m2 in total, the cost including vat and fitting was £8k (i'm still waiting for a quote from the same company). But the quotes I'm getting now seem much higher than I expected, even if I doubled my old Origin cost it would still be 16k compared to 20k. So just trying to work out if it's a complex design or have prices in the Covid period gone sky high -

GaryM replied to Tom's Barn's topic in Windows & Glazing
Thanks for the reply, I think that is in the region of my lowest quote 11k + vat will be 13.2 + 5k for install. so 18K, but that is for triple glaze. I will give them a call. The layout is below, but I'm happy for the supplier to simply it to help reduce cost -

I'm looking for two glazed gable ends, total area of 33m2, one has a front door, the other one or two sliding doors. The quotes I'm getting to supply range from 20k to 42k, which is £600 to £1,280 m2, this is for aluminum with double glazed solar glass and other than the door all fix panes, so not that special. I can't work out if I have complex design (I don'r think so) or have prices all been jacked high recently, looking at other people prices my quotes seem double. So far the best quote is idealcombi, but it still seems high One thing I have just realised my cost include VAT as we are extending upwards. -
Just to complete this thread, I've been told they will install at £30m2, which seems a reasonable rate.

Well I've made a start on the sheds, i'm just using horizontal battens on the sheds and no membrane, but it's on brick and there is a lot of gaps for air to circulate

@SlivenClodHow has your research gone? We are having a standing seam roof fitted and are consider laminated solar panels, in our case BipVco Flextron https://bipvco.com/products/, the roofing supplier supplies the panels already laminated on to the roof panels. It looks great, but it's not the cheapest or most efficient although it's quite good. a 4KW system will cost around £7000, do I or don;t I (budget is already busted)?
-
@Russell griffithsYes it was the initial shock of the price, but works out aorund £30 - 35 m2 which is about the going rate. I think we will be in the position to specify the roof lights to fit the panel widths. I'm getting a lot of shocks lately, I already have a glazed gable end wall with bifolds, just had new quote in for some more glazing, I knew it would be a bit more but not four times the cost
-
@Russell griffithsI can't do the heights I presume Metal Solutions only supply and don't install? I will give them a call
