What do I do with this
Onoff replied to Russell griffiths's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Some of the earliest settlers were Scots. Hard b'stards who hacked their way South literally carving railways out of the rock. The city of Dunedin for example, the name is I believe Gaelic for Edinburgh after the founding father's city. The centre of the city has many similar street names. I worked with many a Hamish, Bruce, Craig, Angus, Blair et al, reflecting their strong heritage. -

Another mate had to in the last few years re-dig his long drop w/c. No mains water either just a bfo catch tank on stilts, pump and rudimentary filter. Think I posted pics back on eBuild. How about making into two "sheds" in different positions on the plot? You really can't keep "as is"? -

I have a few friends out in NZ. A house move for one consisted of first buying a new plot. You then take a chainsaw to the "mid point" / built in cut line of the timber framed house and put it on two low loaders. Off load at the new site and make good the joint. -

How reliable are 110mm (brown) slip couplings? Do they do then with a rubber double seal each end rather than just one? Or...is there such a thing as a solvent weld slip coupling though I can't see how that'd work! Ta. -

I've been making masala chai from scratch lately (Nepalese friends recipe). Very nice too. -
Cajun style? Some may remember here when I had the hot water cylinder "back up" and heat the cold water storage tank. To this day it remains a mystery how suffice to say hot was coming out of the overflow at the soffit. Maybe it's actually a soup maker up there...

God forbid there's ever a nationally adhered to standard for what's done by these companies. Some want red ducts, some want black. Some trial fitted meters with built in isolators then abandoned it as the shareholders were losing out! What the website/email/people on the phone ask for and the blokes on the tools do are often very different. Make their job easy with coffee, biscuits and parking for a start.

ICERT is corporate speak for an Electrical Installation Certificate as laid out in BS7671 aka "the regs". You could do worse than buy / read this: https://www.waterstones.com/book/17th-edition-iet-wiring-regulations-electric-wiring-for-domestic-installers/brian-scaddan/9781138848900 But if you only buy one book the this: https://www.wiringregulations.net/part-p-building-regulations/amendment-3-2015 Easy reads.

I generally have to BREAK something in order to learn from my mistakes! Nice though to be able to come on here with a madcap idea, discuss and make "something from nothing" by upcycling or repurposing. Someone's seen it, done it or has gone down a parrallel path. I wish I'd found our predecessor earlier. I'd have done so much differently. Hindsight is NOT a wonderful thing if you have to keep looking at what could have been done better. Probably explains why my procrastination issues are getting worse not better! One good thing I think is I might now redo something part way through if there's a better long term benefit. Even if it means a slight delay...- 35 replies

You're telling this to a man who drilled thru his footings with one for the new water main! Never thought it would end! Even with the home made extension bar:

In my case with the TCT core cutter above if I hit steel then I have to change to a bfo Starrett cutter. Going to beg/steal it borrow a diamond one if I go for a single room MVHR.

Is that a serious option? A boxed in soil pipe would still be an ugly feature on the wall. -

Never too late...but... Mod the stud wall - easy 'ish Dig out the foam & introduce a slip coupling to the horizontal (brown) waste from the wc - easy. Then worry for ever more? Excavate that corner with restricted access, OK the 100mm slab isn't there. It'll mean digging (coring? ), down through the Polypipe panel, PIR, EPS, the concrete to square off footings then through the footings themselves: Breaking out the concrete I introduced in that corner will be tight - where the green rake handle is: Mod the soil pipe in the loft Introduce a swept bend and bring out under the footings - All to get rid of all this. The further over, black soil from the d'stairs cloak would also need to be changed to down thru the floor and out under the footings. If I later change to a gable end even the drain pipe could go. Then blast all that paint off, render and EWI! -

Could you add the fat to a big tank of old engine oil and burn in a waste oil burner. Every time I open a tin of mackrel, sardines etc I wonder if it'd burn...- 35 replies
