HELP, failed perc test and on clay soil
joe90 replied to nowtie's topic in Rainwater, Guttering & SuDS
I agree however what happens to rainfall on the site before any building work.? The size of the site is the same so rainfall per sq m is the same, after building it will just “go” wherever faster unless attenuated. -
An alkaline cleaner should always be used for any stains on limestone, and this includes cement residues. Care should be taken when choosing a cleaner, as many do contain acid. Find a cleaner like Lithofin Power Cleaner that eases cement removal and other stains from limestone without acid.

Brick acid.

House retrofit, knee wall/roof structure

In my opinion you would be fine, the timbers look substantial, as said above you need to create a goal post to support the middle two short uprights above the new opening. -

Lean to Veranda to the back of the house
joe90 replied to recognized's topic in Building Regulations
For my own knowledge I have been looking into this and it’s odd that a rear extension is allowed up to 3m in depth but not a veranda 🤷♂️. Also planning portal talks about “half the width of the original house but in this looks to be ok for the full width of the house (B), am I going senile. (Don’t answer that) -
Lean to Veranda to the back of the house

Just goes to show conflicting info on the web, however, what if you leave a small gap and build a pergola 🤷♂️ Is a pergola a veranda? The difference between pergolas and verandas is that the pergola is a freestanding structure which can be added to any outdoor space. Verandas must be attached to your home. Therefore info on this web site is wrong (like I posted above) https://custom-canopies.co.uk/news/do-i-need-planning-permission-to-fit-a-carport-veranda-or-pergola/ -
Lean to Veranda to the back of the house
joe90 replied to recognized's topic in Building Regulations
Planning rules state that structures which do not need planning permission must not have verandas, raised platforms, or balconies. The regulations define a veranda as any platform that is raised above 300mm from the ground. It is, therefore, difficult to build a veranda which does not require planning permission. so, if not raised above 300mm it is not a veranda 🤷♂️ -

No tell them you dug in another part of your property 🤷♂️, might be worth getting a small digger in and dig a few deep holes in various places to see if better results can be found. -
If it’s a pain blow it out with a pressure washer and replace as above, but not too much or you will undermine the blocks (which is why mine were laid on granite chips not sand).

My restricted water supply ...
joe90 replied to Ferdinand's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
That’s bonkers, your meter going missing, I would contact your water co and ask why your meter is missing (it’s theirs not yours) and how are you/them supposed to measure your water usage (before they start sending you stupid bills). -

Looks like a slight fall but not much. Water has a surface tension which is why a minimum of 2% is advocated.
-
If you want 2% use a 1 mtr piece of wood, stick a 2cm little block one end and put your sprit level on it on the patio (block lowest end) and the bubble should be central. This will give you an idea of the slope (or not).
-
Put a spirit level on it 🤷♂️yes minimum 2%.

I had not heard of that before.

Engineered Wood flooring - Expansion Query
joe90 replied to Sarah29's topic in Wood & Laminate Flooring
I question why you would lay a floor so it can be lifted again?. I laid an engineering oak floor in my build and glued it down, I hate floating floors as they often sound hollow. The threshold to tiles (I made from Oak) had a 10mm expansion gap. -

I hope your not paying by the hour but a set price? -
I question that, my son works in the car trade for a major manufacturer and they will not take EV,s back in exchange because their second hand value has plummeted. Also sales of new EV,s has diminished mainly because predicted ranges have proved not attainable.

How do you stop weeds growing between the blocks?
-
I have heard of resin type being spoiled by “power steering” whilst not moving, block paving will cause weeds to grow between them, I had some block paving laid for a patio but was laid on granite chips not sand, this enabled me to pressure wash the weeds out without disturbing what was under the blocks (which can happen with sand). I really like imprinted concrete and comes in many designs and colours.

Then IMO just a coat of paint on the doors till you renovate it properly, no point in wasting money now.
