I have always thought this. Despite being very good at woodwork I decided to go block and brick for the solidity factor, there was enough timber work to keep me busy throughout the build. Yes wiring and plumbing is not so easy but I can hang anything I want from very solid feeling walls and still insulated to near passive levels. Just my opinion.

Don’t worry, the answer is here, free electricity https://easydiypowerplan.com/?pid=1&hop=canhdong90 how do people sleep at night selling snake oil?, I was intrigued to see what the actual plans show you (which must be bollocks) ?

Do you think this is a good sign that planning will go through?

This is so wrong on many levels, I don’t doubt it but there should be local policies dictating what is acceptable. I think every time a planning appeal goes against the planner they get a black mark, too many black marks and they are sacked ?♂️. -

I was told my planning was refused because I didn’t offer a bung!! (By a neighbour ). -
Don’t call him a freak! Fixable from outside, tower would be best, should not let wet in.

Hybrid Off Grid Energy Feasibility
joe90 replied to Curtis's topic in General Alternative Energy Issues
Oo. er, this thread and the lekky price hike thread have got me thinking twice about self installing PV. I know @ProDave did his own (mind he is an electrician but how hard can it be ?♂️.). I have a South facing garage roof or South facing field nearby. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/164775013949?var=0&&mkcid=1&mkrid=710-53481 -
I now might re consider installing solar panels as a DIY instal is cheaper than it used to be. ?

Hybrid Off Grid Energy Feasibility
joe90 replied to Curtis's topic in General Alternative Energy Issues
Whilst I applaud being self sufficient I agree that £30k is not a big portion of a build cost, having mains connection will be a selling point if you should ever want to sell (we all do eventually) and as we get older maintaining kit gets more difficult and a worry. I built a large conservatory on the South side of my build and this contributes greatly to the warmth of the house for a large part of the year. I also have a wood stove for burning local sourced wood as much fir the “cave man” effect and it works well. -
“If it ain’t broke, don’t mend it” Is one of my motto,s. If you do replace it run new pipe and leave the old buried.

I don’t see why you need an SE, if you want drawings find an architectural technician, they are usually cheaper, their main job is drawings and will have dealt with construction details, IF building control want structural calcs THEN find an SE. If you want advice about your construction post it up here where plenty of us have knowledge to share. I designed our build and did not use an SE.

I had a planner like that, went to appeal and won hands down, appeal officer even told her she was not abiding by their own policies ? -
Sounds about right fir Southmead !!!

We have some near me on the verge, I spray it in the spring as soon as I see new growth and again if I see it pop up, relentless eh.

I would dig small hole, insert tube, hold in place with pin on bottom of gate, propped not to move, backfill with concrete/postcrete and smooth as per diagram, to stop water/crap draining into the hole.

Welcome, do you mean the neighbours architect? Not sure about “right to light” if your window was up against the boundary, might be worth looking up on the tinternet!. You said their garden room was touching yours? So how did light come into your window. ?

At last….., what weight and what are you going to put on the end of that bar to balance it (min 50kg if your limiting load to that)? I would add another “putlock” and short tube down the back of the wall, take the strain off the bolt into the wall if it were me!

@markc I totally agree, a few years ago there was tons of timber used fir hoarding at a building I was working in about to be taken away and dumped, I asked if I could help myself but told it was not allowed, came back after dark and spoke to the gate guard who agreed and let me in and help myself ?.

If I remember correctly you can’t claim RHI if you use the ASHP fir cooling!!!. Read. Jeremy Harris,s blog, he reverse engineered his ASHP to give cooling and it worked well.

I concur. I really enjoyed my build, despite being told it will be stressful, I did not. Not everybody can take this in their stride but I was very lucky I had a brilliant main contractor.

Cavity batt and loft roll insulation, are they compatible?
joe90 replied to epsilonGreedy's topic in Heat Insulation
My loft insulation roll meets the cavity batts no problem, it gives continuity to the insulation envelope.
