  1. +1 ASAP
  2. I am not an expert on this type of thing but if you have planning permission granted by the LA and highways consulted can they legally change their mind? Might be worth consulting a planning consultant to find where you stand.
  3. Ask him if he wants to move to North Devon, I will volunteer to be his patient ?
  4. Back in Bristol my GP retired early and I got on well with him, he also moved to Cornwall and popped in to see me during the build. When I asked him why he stopped he told me patients like me were great, willing to do what I could to help myself, but the majority were just winging moaners who wanted a miracle pill and didn’t want to help themselves and blamed him when it all went wrong.
  5. I prefer a doctor like that, tells the truth and no BS.
  6. In our case I just made sure I never did anything wrong, that way, any allegations can be proved wrong (with a smile on your face). Their loss not yours.
  7. Which is why (I think) the majority of us on this forum are self builders to make sure it is done right ?
  8. Is it not the case that “double insulated “ means no metal case so nothing to Earth ?
  9. Or with Cornish people ? I think my saving grace is we built on a plot that belonged to my wife’s father but I am still seen as an Emmitt (local vernacular fir foreigner).
  10. Also extension leads should be fully extended before running anything with high current, when still in a coil it will heat up. I ran an extension lead for something many years ago(I can’t remember what) and found the plastic cable had melted into a lump and was very hot.
  11. I would rather see it wired into a fused spur outlet if it were me.
  12. I bought an ASHP on EBay and installed myself for less than the cost of a gas boiler. I also have a huge conservatory on the south side and yes gets a bit hot mid summer but heats the house during the shoulder months for nothing.
  13. Yes our neighbours were furious that I named them (but the council did nothing ?)
  14. Nothing defamatory but definitely untrue, I would get the council on it pronto, nothing worse than gossip to start a rumour. I countered our neighbour (and actually named him and her) on the planning website to give evidence of their claim as I had documented evidence to the contrary. Mind even our planners made statements that were not true which is probably another reason we won hands down at appeal ?
  15. Why not go for 150mm cavity (like I did) and save heating costs forever. (And I would not use rigid insulation in the cavity, I used batts which you can self instal).
  16. IMO that’s crap.
  17. I have never thought about “rules” fir this, it also depends on the situation, shear, compression etc also depends on wood, oak vs pine vs ply, I just use what I consider appropriate ?‍♂️
  18. That looks like damp to me, render experts will be along shortly.
  19. I don’t understand that bit, but hey if they are going to re fit after you remove the beading that’s great.
  20. Welcome, I think the above is very good advise, at least starting now the weather will get better as the build progresses. I went with brick and block and wet plastering and warm roof ?keep us informed of progress and don’t forget there is no such thing as a daft question (we have all been there).
  21. The only reason (I can see) fir the beading is to hide a gap under the skirting or if laminate flooring was laid (which you say it was not). I am not a carpet fitter but have laid carpet in the past. Did they come out and measure up for the carpet before fitting?, if so I am surprised that person did not mention the beading as I can see it might cause a problem (and in my opinion not look good. If they have asked you to remove the beading before they lay the carpet they must be supplying new carpet as it will be too short!!!
  22. I think you will find most opinion here is based on real life usage (like my own).
  23. I read this too, if the screws are longer the timber can shrink and the longer screws are deeper in the wood leading to popping!
  24. Mine was hooked and frankly unless you are looking for them you can’t see them. If I were to slate a roof I would definitely use hooks.
