How would you determine wall orientation….
joe90 replied to Jimbo123's topic in Bricklaying, Blockwork & Mortar
I have found that sometimes it’s better to “look” straight/level/vertical than actually be straight etc (if that makes sense) and if there are any errors you can live with them and not beat yourself up over it. -

+1 on the string (kiss) I am known for being OCD about things being accurate but don’t know what accuracy is acceptable but I would say it’s up to you to be happy with the outcome. -
+1 wot @PeterW says above

Howdens kitchen - how to negotiate?
joe90 replied to johnhenstock83's topic in Kitchen Units & Worktops
I had a Howdens account and found their stuff generally good, when getting a quote i always got a B@Q quote (which was usually lower) and Howdens then did better. -

Isn’t that what a microwave does in the kitchen? -

I disagree, do you still believe everything you “knew” 40 years ago despite more information being available since then 🤷♂️. I listened to that, so woke comes from awake! There are things I have changed my mind about over the years due to reading or listening to debate. (Some of it building related due to this forum) As your link says, woke is used as a bad term, frankly there is nothing wrong(in my opinion) with changing one’s mind after more facts and debate come to light. -

Yes but at least he listened to evidence and saw the light. -

My two Penney’s worth….pollution of all kinds is killing the earth and us, as David Attenborough said years ago “the biggest threat to this planet is man”. (Perhaps we need a good pandemic 🤷♂️) -
Softening the feel of a concrete slab floor
joe90 replied to Sparrowhawk's topic in Floor Structures
Yes our UFH keeps the house at a stable temp but no “hot” floors. -
Well if they do notice (they never measured my build with a height limit) you could always act dumm and apply for retro permission. 😎
-
From my readings if the building is within 2m of the boundary the overall height is restricted to 2.5m. If more than 2m from the boundary eaves at 2.5m and ridge at 4m.

I once read (but not seen since) that paper or similar laid between layers of fibreglass insulation stops wind/air washing between the layers giving better insulation performance .

Sorry, yes I would not worry about 100mm frame off 75mm wall plate.

I totally agree, fine him heavily (money put to good use) rather than cost the taxpayer £££££ to house and feed him for months.

Anticipating solar gain / overheating in a new extension
joe90 replied to Brix's topic in House Extensions & Conservatories
Yes, lots here said my South facing large conservatory would overheat, yes it may fir a couple of days a year but mostly it’s a light airy warm area that actually heats the house via bifolds a lot of the year. -
I am looking to sell a house I bought about 8 years ago (as temp accommodation then a rental) the buyers solicitors are asking fir planning permission docs for a porch and side attached garage, this was not mentioned when we bought it so have no idea. I have looked at the planning portal and no records exist. Does the 7 or 10 year rule apply? Advise please.

In fairness this is a great forum with mountains of real life knowledge, throughout my build of about 4 years, even as a retired builder, I have learnt loads of stuff so bring on the questions 👍
