  1. I never liked being a landlord and thankfully not one shortly and the plus is a young couple who were renting are finally getting on the housing ladder 👍
  2. I was only pointing out the possibility if that’s the only place it could go restricted by the existing build of the house, a compromise worth paying maybe 🤷‍♂️.
  3. How often ..?
  4. Don’t we all 🤷‍♂️
  5. However if no other space in the house and a super insulated “room” built around it. Also Losses from a “cooler” tank are far lower than from a “hot” tank.
  6. I disagree, I would rather have a “normal” door lining and a plastered return, it just means you cant have an architrave on that side of the frame.
  7. Welcome, we like questions. What other work are you doing on your renovation 🤷‍♂️, I only ask because an ASHP really only works on a well insulated house. With regard the hot water tank an ASHP produces a lower temp than a gas boiler therefore it’s usual to have a larger DHW tank, mine is set to 43’ which is hot enough to wash dishes, shower bath etc BUT with no added cold water which you probably currently do with your gas boiler. It’s also a DHW tank with a larger coil specifically for an ASHP. As a heat pump produces lower temp water you also need bigger radiators for the central heating. although this a self build forum we also include renovations 👍
  8. Generally the less the house is air tight/draught free the less efficient it will be, however if you know of people that have done it in similar houses and like it then it sounds ok.
  9. Well, interesting thread, fir my part I designed a house which was well insulated firstly, only double glazing in wooden frames as the coatings used are not far short of triple glazing figures, I did no calculations whatsoever, purely guesswork, small ASHP off EBay (which could be switched out fir a bigger one if required in the future), bifolds. MVHR, UFH. The house only needs heating for a couple of months of the year, the rest of the time it’s completely stable, woodburner for upping the lounge temp if required (and a nice feeling when looking at the cold outside ) No heating upstairs (apart from electric towel rads and electric UFH for warm toes after bath/shower). IF a bedroom needs heating (old people or illness) a simple plug In heater raises the temp very quickly and it lasts (not had to do this yet). I would never consider a certificate fir being passive but I can simply show anyone the very low electricity bills throughout the year, what’s not to like 🤷‍♂️
  10. As someone who has studied diet and health for many years I would disagree, but not on this thread.
  11. Yup @Nickfromwales, minimum standards.
  12. It did but a while ago now, just trying to protect a newby.
  13. Ah no, what I meant is there is no such thing as a measurable element of thermal mass and this was pointed out by a previous member here, If you’re interested do a search on this site fir the “discussions”. In reality we all know what you mean and many (including myself) use that term just beware someone may raise the issue.
  14. Healthy vs lots of grease! note, if you want to reply to someone use “@joe90” and pick their name from a drop-down list and they will be notified. 👍
  15. @health mechanic does that not conflict with….
  16. +1, I was the same with my builder and never regretted it, peace of mind is worth ££££
  17. I have MVHR with an extract at the kitchen end of the kitchen diner room, the dining end an “input”, re circulating hood and if I burn the toast or excess steam can switch to boost the MVHR. If it’s really bad I just open a couple of windows for a few minutes. So many external fans have plappy fins that dance in the wind and are a permanent draught.
  18. I see no reason why the two types of cooker hood should be quieter or more noisy, the noisy one is either more powerful or knackered 🤷‍♂️
  19. As a new person you will not be aware of the “thermal mass” debates here 🤯, no such thing (but we all know what you mean), just warning you in case…….
  20. @Djl your original question was do i need permission? Well you tried asking and got no reply so (IMO) crack on and do what you want, you are “renovating” something that exists so cannot see it’s a problem.
  21. I had a soak away under my drive in a previous cottage with no lid, just a large excavated hole filled with brick rubble.
  22. Good morning and a very warm welcome to THE self build forum, I originally wanted to build in straw bales but came round to brick and block and I am now glad I did. I too have a woodstove and would not be without one, I also have a 4kW ASHP and MVHR. Best of luck with this and ask away about things, remember there is no such thing as a stupid question, stupid is not asking (and we have all been there). 👍
  23. I insulated from founds to DPC with XPS and rockwall batts above.
